By Frances J. Karon

On Sunday, Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith, and Mrs. John Magnier’s Love became the second consecutive 1000 Guineas winner sired by Coolmore’s big gun Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) — sire of at least one Classic winner from each crop of racing age through 3yos of 2020 — out of a daughter of Pivotal (Polar Falcon), after the same ownership group’s Hermosa in 2019.

These fillies are among the 39 foals of racing age sired by Galileo from a Pivotal mare. Excluding the three current 2yos since the juvenile races in Europe are only just getting started, the figure of 12 SWs from the 36 foals that are 3 and up equates to 33% SWs to foals on the cross. Eleven of the 12 are GSWs, with six G1SWs. Not surprisingly, it has an A+++ rating on eNicks.

To move up a phenomenal sire like Galileo from an 11% sire of SWs to foals to a sire of 33% to foals, as Pivotal does, is a tremendous achievement. In an unofficial sampling of broodmare sires with multiple black-type winners by Galileo and whose daughters have at least 30 foals by him — unlike, say, George Washington, who has one SW from 1 foal (100%), or Sri Pekan, whose two SWs from three foals give him 67% — Pivotal’s is the highest percentage, with Anabaa at 26% and Storm Cat at 21% as the next best. (To be fair, since I didn’t subtract 2yos out of mares by those sires, we can compare this to Pivotal at 31%, which includes his 2yos, too.)

Love and Hermosa, each of whom was bred by Coolmore or a Coolmore entity, are products of a pattern that we see often with Galileo, where the same mares return to him year after year. Once a mare is considered worthy of his level, it makes sense for her to remain there until there’s an idea of whether or not it is a successful pairing. And when it works, it works well: This “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” approach has seen 43 individual mares produce at least two SWs by Galileo, for 107 of his 314 SWs. You’resothrilling (Storm Cat) has five, all GSWs; at four each are Massarra (Danehill), two of which are GSWs; Remember When (Danehill Dancer), all GSWs; and Shastye (Danehill), all GSWs as well. Of the 12 mares with three Galileo SWs apiece, three are by Pivotal. Love’s dam Pikaboo is one of these, having also produced G3SWs Flattering and Peach Tree.

Hermosa’s dam Beauty Is Truth has two other Galileo G1SWs in Hydrangea and The United States. (The third mare is Irish 1000 Guineas winner Halfway to Heaven, dam of G1SWs Magical and Rhododendron and G3SW Flying the Flag.)

In the case of Galileo and Pivotal, there’s a 4×5 inbreeding factor to Special, the granddam of Galileo’s sire Sadler’s Wells and dam of Pivotal’s grandsire Nureyev. Combining descendants of Sadler’s Wells with descendants of Nureyev is and long has been a good formula, so this is just another effective manifestation of it. We’re already seeing its positive influence continue two generations beyond Galileo; his sons Frankel (sire of G1SWs Cracksman and Veracious, among others, from Pivotal mares), New Approach, and Rip Van Winkle and his grandson Havana Gold (by Teofilo, by Galileo) have all sired SWs from mares by Pivotal or one of his sons (Kyllachy and Excellent Art). Now the opposite of the cross — Pivotal over Galileo — is gaining traction; the most prominent example of it is Classic winner Sottsass (by Siyouni, by Pivotal, from a Galileo mare), first in the G1 Prix du Jockey Club in 2019.

Love won’t get the opportunity to emulate Hermosa, who bounced back to win the Irish 1000 Guineas three weeks after her win in the British version. This year, the Irish Classic will be contested with six days between the races, so it’s unlikely that her trainer Aidan O’Brien would target the Guineas double for her as he did with Hermosa.

Because she was already a Group 1 winner at two, Love doesn’t add anything new to the combined stats for her sire and broodmare sire, but as the second Classic winner, she provides a further exclamation point.

On a somewhat related note, Cheveley Park Stud’s much-loved 27yo homebred Pivotal, the sire of 150 SWs and broodmare sire of 107, is also the damsire of Cloak of Spirits, a daughter of Invincible Spirit who was second in the 1000 Guineas; and his son Siyouni, based at the Aga Khan’s Haras de Bonneville in France, sired his fourth Classic winner, in just six crops of 3yos, when Dream and Do won the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches on June 1st.

Aidan O’Brien described Magical as “the ultimate racehorse” after a typically resolute success in the Gr1 Champion Stakes gave the trainer his first success in the race on Saturday. “Every day, she wakes up with a total clean sheet,” O’Brien said. “She accepts everything on the chin and says what do you want me to do today? It’s internally with her, it’s her mind. She never says no.”

The feature event on Champions Day was Magical’s ninth start of the season, just a fortnight after finishing fifth in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, and while the decision to switch the race to the hurdles track meant that the going was soft rather than heavy, it was still demanding enough to suck the enthusiasm from any horse sensing the end of a long campaign.

Magical, though, never looked likely to yield her lead after hitting the front under Donnacha O’Brien more than a furlong out. Addeybb stayed on to finish a three-quarter length second, with the Japanese mare Deirdre, back in third. It was the fourth Group One win of her career and even now, Magical may not be done for the season as a return to the Breeders’ Cup meeting for the Filly & Mare Turf is under serious consideration.

“She’s totally sound, mentally and physically,” O’Brien said. “Her mind is incredible. I think a mile-and-a-quarter is her ideal trip, but she gets a mile-and-a-half because of her class.

<img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-9840" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/882A2110-21.jpg" alt="Flying The Flag at Bush Hill Stud.
“The Arc was a strongly run race and she has come out of that and won here. She handles ease in the ground, she goes on fast ground, what can you say? The lads [in the Coolmore syndicate] will decide if we go to the Breeders’ Cup with her [but] if you asked her, she’d be delighted.”

Magical was a close second behind Enable in the Turf last year and would face another stern opponent in Chad Brown’s Grade One-winner Sistercharlie, the defending champion in the Filly & Mare Turf, if she heads to Santa Anita on 2 November. She is top-priced at 11-4 to round off her season with an extra flourish, while Sistercharlie is a 9-4 chance.

Magical’s win put the seal on an excellent afternoon for Donnacha O’Brien, who took over aboard his father’s main runners on the card after Ryan Moore, the stable jockey, made the long trip to Australia for an ultimately fruitless attempt to win a valuable race in Sydney overnight.

Flying The Flag’s first crop are now unraced 2yo’s and he has three lots on offer at the upcoming Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale.

Candice Dawson enjoyed the honour of saddling the first winner of KZN Galileo stallion The Assayer, whose son Lumber Jackaroo stormed to victory in the first race at Turffontein on Thursday evening.

Based at Yellow Star Stud, The Assayer stood his first season in 2014 and only produced 6 foals in his first crop.

Bred on the Galileo x Danehill cross that has produced Frankel and numerous other champions, his 2018 fee was R10 000.

Improving smartly at his second start and stepping up to the mile, Lumber Jackaroo came home powerfully in the Turffontein opener under Denis Schwarz for trainer Candice Dawson.

The Spring Valley Syndicate bred grey gelding is out of the six-time winner Forest Lecture, a daughter of Lecture.

The Assayer had an eyecatching Barrier Trial winner with Thomas Shelby, trained by Ivan Van Wyk for breeders Yellow Star Stud and owner Mr A F J Duncan.

The juvenile colt looks a smart prospect, finishing first by almost two lengths. Another that is close to winning from trainer Craig Mayhew is Flirty Girty, who has finished second in her last two starts. Also bred by the Spring Valley Syndicate, the three year old is out of a Dominion Royale mare.

The Assayer sold for R1-million at the National Yearling Sale and began his training career with Charles Laird for the Markus Jooste and Bernard Kantor racing partnership.

The handsome grey later relocated to Mike De Kock, racing 10 times to win once and placed twice in two Gr1’s – the Golden Horseshoe and Premier’s Championship. He placed nine times in total. An injury forced an early retirement.

“She’s a Group 1 winner at two three and four, over different trips and different ground and is very straightforward”

It was somehow one of the few to get away from world record-holder Aidan O’Brien last year but the Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes was added to this year’s Group 1 roll of honour when Rhododendron, the full sister to Bush Hill Stud’s Flying The Flag, completed her redemption from a near-death experience in France just 11 months ago.

The master of Ballydoyle was also quickly moving on from his 300th Group 1 win, which was provided by Saxon Warrior in the 2,000 Guineas.

The Lockinge has proved elusive for the Coolmore team since Hawk Wing annihilated the field in 2003 and this second win was at the other end of the scale, as Rhododendron had a short-head to spare over last year’s runner-up Lightning Spear and beat a strong field of males.

O’Brien runners dictated the race, with Deauville striding on and Lancaster Bomber flanking him. Rhododendron was planted in the chasing pack.

Only Rhododendron and Lightning Spear could get past Lancaster Bomber and the pair produced the type of nip-and-tuck finish that Moore usually comes out on top of – although it was his first success in this race at the tenth attempt.

Paying tribute to the remarkable filly, Moore said: “She’s a Group 1 winner at two, three and four, over different trips and on different ground and is very straightforward.”

O’Brien took the opportunity to remember the darkest day for the daughter of Galileo, which was nearly a year ago in the Prix de Diane at Chantilly.

“She bled the worst I have ever seen. She exploded in the race and all the horses and jockeys were covered in her blood. I think may be it was the heat that day – it was 30 degrees at Chantilly.

“We were very worried for her – it is very rare for a horse to come back from something like that.”

That she recovered to win the Group 1 Prix de L’Opera on Arc weekend last year before finishing a gallant second in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Del Mar suggested she was made of something otherworldly.

Some may have questioned her remaining in training as she was swept aside by Cracksman over an extended mile and a quarter in France on her reappearance but all that did was get the Ballydoyle brains ticking.

O’Brien added: “The last day in France she travelled well through the race before John’s [Gosden] horse won well. She was going a step slower through the race than she wanted, she wanted to go a gear higher and that indicated she would be fine over a mile.”

That proved precisely the case but her Royal Ascot assignment could be either the Queen Anne over a mile, for which Paddy Power made her the 3-1 favourite (from 7-1), or the Prince Of Wales’s back over a mile and a quarter.

Ominously O’Brien added: “She is going to improve again – she hasn’t been on the grass gallop yet!”

The handsome chestnut stallion Flying The Flag stands for a fee of R20 000 and his first crop will be yearlings this August. Their younger full sister, Magical, won the Gr2 Debutante last year and finished a whisker off for 2nd in the Gr1 Moyglare to Happily.

Aiden O’Brien describes Rhododendron as a special filly, whilst her jockey Heffernan said after her Chantilly Gr1 win: “I rode her a bit in the spring and I had her down as nearly being our number one.”

Hadlow Stud have welcomed a special foal late last week, an eyecatching filly by Flying The Flag. What makes her special is her inbreeding to world super-sire Galileo.

It is the first crop to be born for the internationally well related Flying The Flag, whose full siblings include twice Gr1 winning Rhododendron and Gr2 winner Magical.

A Group winner himself and performed at the highest international racing standard, Flying The Flag is out of a multiple Gr1 winning Pivotal mare, and is himself a three parts brother to American Gr1 winning mare, Photo Call.

The foal is out of Reliable, a very well bred daughter of Giant’s Causeway out of a Galileo / Private Account mare.

This cross has produced the likes of Gr1 European champions Gleneagles, Churchill and more recently, Gr1 winner Happily – ironically, Flying The Flag’s full sister Magical has beaten Happily previously.

The foals dam is a winner, and her third dam April Run (IRE) crowned Champion 3-y-o filly in France in 1981 and Champion older mare in U.S.A. in 1982 after securing four Gr1 wins.

Flying The Flag stands for a fee of R20 000 this season at Bush Hill Stud, and is producing eyecatching foals with plenty of size and quality.

Cathy and Jonathan Martin are based in Mooi River, and have bred the likes of Jimmi Choo and Celtic Fire amongst others. They currently stand Bezrin and Announce at their Hadlow Stud.

Its always good news when a stallion has a sibling entered for a Gr1, but to have two full sisters on one of the worlds most exclusive race days is certainly an astounding achievement in itself.

Flying The Flag’s Group winning full sisters – Rhododendron and the youngest Magical – will be competing in France on the day of the Arc De Triomphe.

Rhododendron, named Irelands Champion 2YO Filly in the previous season and a Gr1 winner, will contest the Prix de Lópera over 2000m for a stake of 400 000 Euros, whilst juvenile Magical, a recent winner of the Gr2 Debutante and second in a recent Irish Gr1 by a head to Happily, a horse she defeated in her Gr2 victory, will line up at the start of the Prix Marcel Boussac over 1600m.

The narrow winning margin between Happily and Magical (on the rail).

Both Galileo fillies out of five time Gr1 winning Pivotal mare Halfway To Heaven, are trained by maestro Aiden O’Brien. Flying The Flag is a Group winner himself and placed at the Group Levels in both Europe and Dubai, as well as South Africa.

Flying The Flag’s first foals are arriving this season and they are of outstanding quality, with plenty of strength and muscle, substance and bone.

The chestnut son of Galileo stands at Bush Hill Stud for a fee of R20 000 this season.

Flying The Flag’s younger full sister, Magical, followed in her older Gr1 winning full sisters footsteps by winning the Gr2 Debutante in Ireland. Rhododendron won the race in 2016 and was crowned Irish Champion 2YO Filly after an exceptional Gr1 winning season.

Aidan O’Brien won the Group 2 Debutante Stakes for the 12th time. Despite September and Happily dominating the betting, it was their stablemate Magical, ridden by Donnacha O’Brien, who ran out the winner of the contest.

Magical, a winner of a Cork maiden on her previous start, was sent off in front by O’Brien on the rain-softened ground, with Gr3 winner Happily, the choice of Ryan Moore, sitting just off her.

Chesham winner September, who was the subject of late money and was sent off 11-10 favourite, was struggling from two furlongs out, where Happily, the 6-4 second favourite, was also coming under pressure.

Magical, meanwhile, was travelling much more sweetly as O’Brien sent her away from her rivals to win by one and a quarter lengths from Happily, with Mary Tudor, who had run Magical to a head when making her debut at Cork, the same distance back in third. September was three-quarters of a length away in fourth.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-6501" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/IMG_9272-flyingtheflag.jpg" alt="Flying The Flag pictured recently at Bush Hill Stud - the full brother to Gr1 winner, Rhododendron. Image: Candiese Marnewick

The winner is a sister to Fillies’ Mile winner and 1,000 Guineas and Oaks runner-up Rhododendron, who won the Debutante a year ago.

O’Brien suggested a rematch could be on the cards for the three fillies, with next month’s Gr1 Moyglare Stud Stakes on the radar.

He said: “That went very well for Magical. She was green and made quite hard work of it to win her maiden at Cork, but she travelled very well in front today.

“Donnacha didn’t go mad on her and she’s won well. She’s out of a Pivotal mare and that probably helped her on the ground. She got the trip well and went to the line well – she should stay further.

Magical is now second favourite at 10-1 (from 25) for the Qipco 1,000 Guineas and market leader for the Investec Oaks.

Galileo full brother Flying The Flag, standing at Bush Hill Stud, has his first foals arriving this season. Warwick Render reports that “we have had great reports on his first foals from all around the country.”

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-custom1 wp-image-6509" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/IMG_7142-FLYING-THE-FLAG-Candiese-Marnewick-640x480.jpg" alt="Flying The Flag pictured in May 2017. Image: Candiese Marnewick

A three time winner over 1400m and up, Flying The Flag was a Gr3 winner at three, Gr1 placed in Dubai, Gr2 runner-up at 2, and competed in French 2000 Guineas, Irish 2000 Guineas and Epsom Derby. He is Timeform Rated at 115.

His dam Halfway To Heaven won three Gr1’s including the Gr1 Irish One Thousand Guineas, Gr1 Nassau Stakes, and Gr1 Sun Chariot Stakes.

The immediate family has not only produced Gr1 winning and Cartier Juvenile Filly Rhodododendron, has also produced American dual Gr1 winner by Galileo and a $3 million dollar Keeneland broodmare prospect, Photo Call. Photo Call shares a second dam – the speedy Cassandra Go – with Flying The Flag.

Flying The Flag stands for a fee of R20 000 this season.

KZN’s recently crowned 2016 Stallion Of The Year Kahal, saw his dual Gr1 placed daughter, an impeccably Summerhill-bred grand-daughter of the great Galileo, secure her first much deserved first Graded Stakes win in the Gr2 Ipi Tombe Challenge.

Intergalactic was one of five winners for the Sean Tarry stable on Sansui Summer Cup day. A R360 000 CTS Ready To Run Sales graduate, the daughter of Najoom is owned by Chris Van Niekerk and has now won over R700 000, after winning four times and placing 10 times.

Named in honour of a champion of the turf (who has a KZN connection, as the Scott Bros imported Ipi Tombe’s dam to South Africa before she was sold on), the Gr2 mile boasted an eleven strong line-up and after Intergalactic was slow out, the pace was on from the jump with Fort Ember showing the way.

When the favourite Negroamaro came forward with Polyphonic at the 500m to challenge Fort Ember, the race was on.

With the action down the middle, Polyphonic looked a likely winner as Negroamaro went one-paced and Tahini arrived on the scene.

It was anybody’s to win at the 200m. Despite taking forever to get going down the inside, Intergalactic found her best finish to hold off the persistent Polyphonic by 0,40 lengths in a time of 99,50 secs.

Intergalactic was nominated for two categories at the KZN Breeders Awards evening on Saturday night, and as Master Of Ceremonies Graeme Hawkins pointed out, “has thrown her name into the hat for next year,” with her scintillating performance.

The liver chestnut filly has placed twice just a length off Inara in the Gr1 Empress Club Stakes and Garden Province Stakes, and three lengths off No Worries in the KZN Breeders Million Mile.

Her half-brother by Visionaire sold on Friday evening at the CTS Johannesburg Ready To Run Sale for R340 000, purchased by Rainbow Beach Trading. This is the dam line of American super stars and sires amongst them Go For Gin, Pleasant Tap and Dont Say Halo. Intergalactic is certain to be an asset to stud whens he retires based on the strength of her pedigree.

Her sire, the deceased Kahal, is currently fourth on the sires log with a winners to runners percentage of 28.8%, lying behind sires Silvano, Captain Al and Trippi. Dynasty follows behind Kahal along with Jet Master, Var and Western Winter, by stakes earned.

Our National Champion Breeders, Summerhill Stud, collected their 10th KZN Breeders Award for Leading Breeder.

Other KZN news on Summer Cup day included Bull Valley (Toreador) and newly crowned KZN Breeders Horse Of The Year, Talktothestars (Overlord), placing second and third behind Trip To Heaven in the Gr2 Merchants.

Congratulations to all concerned.
