You might have expected it in normal times when a major stud farm was disposing of its stock, but in what has been dubbed “South Africa’s deepest online sale of Thoroughbreds”, you would be pleasantly encouraged by the scale of the internet traffic the Summerhill dispersal has attracted, more so with the government’s opening of the e-commerce sector.

Of course it’s bargain time, and those who have taken cheer from the gesture to racing of Mary Oppenheimer and Daughters financial support of Phumelela have obviously been emboldened by what lies ahead. There are predictions doing the rounds that this year’s foal crop will be significantly reduced, and that those with the stock to supply the market when things adopt a modicum of normality, will be the ones to prosper.

As recently as Sunday, the Business Times front page featured an interview with one of Mary Slack’s principal advisers, Charles Savage, who disclosed that their investment business had seen a 300% growth in new investors piling into the value stocks on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in anticipation of a return to the “new normal”.

Speaking from Summerhill, Mick Goss said that while opening bids were on the modest side, there had been a surprising level of interest, including many making use of local judges to vet horses for them, including Jane Thomas, Bruce Le Roux and Peter Choice, who’s very well connected in the polo and leisure horse worlds.

Summerhill Stud at the Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale 2019. Image: Candiese Lenferna

“There has been an encouraging level of interest in the yearlings and weanlings as well, as trainers and speculators seek out what could turn out to be one of the opportunities of their lives in stocking up their yards or in the case of the speculators, having the stock on hand when things make a turn for the better”.

And who would disagree with that? The families that delivered 10 Breeders championships, Group One-producing daughters of Galileo; a Black type Giant’s Causeway, and established producers of top performers by Kingmambo, Pivotal, Fusaichi Pegasus and Mastercraftsman, and a cluster of Classic heroines and Group-winning or Stakes-producing mares, as well as yearling and weanling siblings to 4 Group One winners.

On the administration side, the vendors will take care of the stallion fees in respect of the mares. The vast bulk of foals in South Africa at present have yet to be registered on account of the pandemic’s intervention, but those acquiring foals can do so in the knowledge they are acquired free of encumbrance, other than the need to pay the newly announced registration fee of approximately R1100, a healthy drop from last year.

“We know that the current email system of submitting offers is cumbersome, but we have someone who will be dealing with it hourly going forward. Hopefully, that will make it a bit more interactive. We have also decided to extend the deadline for offers to the close of business on Monday 25th, so at to enable people to deal with their “business” on a business day.”

Those who’ve known Summerhill for the past 40 years, will know how painful it is to be parting with our horses. They have been the mainstay of our lives and the farm was built on their backs. But the time has come, and the timing couldn’t have been less opportune. That said, one man’s adversity is always another’s opportunity, and so the complete dispersal of our stock will undoubtedly be characterized by some of the game’s greatest bargains.

These are the families that delivered up a modern day record of 10 Breeders Championships in the face of the most formidable competition of our time. The broodmares include daughters of the world’s most celebrated stallions, Galileo, Kingmambo, Giant’s Causeway, Pivotal, Fusaichi Pegasus, Mastercraftsman etc. Among them are the mothers of 4 Gr.1 winners and many others with Group-winning progeny or who were Stakes winners and performers in their own right. Both the yearlings and the foals include siblings to these top horses, while its common cause on Summerhill that the most recent crop of foals stands comparison with the best we’ve known.

The mares have been served by some of the nation’s top stallions, including champion sire Trippi; leading sire of 3 Year old Stakes Winners with his first crop, dual J&B Met producer, Ideal World, Duke Of Marmalade, the leading sire nationally of three year old Stakes winners (6 all told) with his first South African crop; as well as a selection of the outstanding young racehorses that populate the Summerhill Stallion barn.

To explain the process, we are hosting the deepest on-line sale of Thoroughbreds ever. The idea is to leave the sale open to offers (on email to info@summerhill.co.za for 10 days). The horses are offered without reserve, so every offer, even if it’s a good home, will be considered.

Earlier this week, it was reported that we were giving all our horses away. While that wasn’t quite accurate, the reality is that in this market, there will obviously be horses unsold, and we will be looking to place those as best we can. Our history reminds us that among those, there will still be “gold dust”.

Tuesday was a sad day in the history of KZN (and South African) racehorse breeding, as Scott Bros held their Total Dispersal Sale. Scott Bros got off to a start early in the game 52 years ago, with the likes of the brilliant Politician getting the Scott Bros on the map.

Robin recalled how at the time they had purchased his dam Ofa, the most expensive mare to be imported to SA at the time and how they sent her to a waining stallion on very good pedigree advice – an amusing incident, when Robin phoned Des and made the suggestion that was proposed, Des answered “I thought Oligarchy was dead!”.

The nick worked and produced the mighty chestnut, who sold for just R5 000 as a yearling. Robin said it was the best R5 000 he had ever received, as the horse brought a lifetime of branding for the Scott Bros.

The Scott Bros have produced so many Group Winners over the years that they have literally lost count – also, a little known story is that Robin actually bred a winner at Royal Ascot named Cutting Blade, a stallion that later went to stud in England. Both Robin and Des Scott have significant success and have no doubt had a major influence on the stud book today – just two years ago, Des bred and raced Rivet to Gr1 victory. They have since sold the Fastnet Rock colt to Hong Kong.

They also raced Querari and Quasillo’s brilliant Gr1 winning third dam, and have been behind some of the most significant horses to date – including the damline of Legislate, and importing the dams of Teal, Ipi Tombe, La Fabulous and the unforgettable Devon Air.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-5338" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/MG_6074-theapache.jpg" alt="The magnificent The Apache is off to a great start at stud, with 75% of his runners already stakes earners from a handfu l to run. Image: Candiese Marnewick

Another example is Star Of Arcole bred by Scott Bros, who has brought Varsfontein Stud the likes of Ash Cloud, Fiorella, Princess Of Light and Drill Sargeant.

The Scott Bros have stood South African Champion sires, amongst them Foveros and Jungle Cove, and its fitting that towards the end of an era, The Apache returned “home” to stud. Famously an R80 000 buy off the National 2YO Sale, the son of Mogok crossed the line first in the Gr1 Arlington Million, won a Gr2 in Dubai and took home two Gr1 wins – winning in four countries and earning over R17-million in stakes.

The Apache represents four generations of Highdown blood, starting with fifth dam Lenore, who gave them Leta, and went on to produce the great Bold West – The Apache’s third dam. Mogok has also done them proud, producing American Gr1 winner in the USA, Gypsy’s Warning, and is holding her own at stud producing winners. Scott Bros have also had winners in Hong Kong, Singapore, America, England and Kenya.

Importing mares over the years from the worlds breeding establishments paid off, and in the last few years had Equus Award winners such as The Apache, Wild One and Talktothestars – and as recently as the past Vodacom Durban July, a runner with Matador Man who Robin has retained a share in. The Scott Bros have consistently been in the top 10 of the National Breeders Log for years.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-8397" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Bold-west-joyce-robin-scott.jpgRFb0bf90f.png" alt="The Scotts with Bold West at Scottsville.
The Scott Bros also have a strong association with Africa’s greatest horserace – tasting success in conjunction with Tony Millard with the great Devon Air and Illustrador after Politician.

Robin Scott remarked last week: “In our 50 years as breeders I’ve seen down cycles like these comes and go, this time things are really bad. It’s linked to the economic situation in the country, but history promises the industry will see good times again. I hope the government can get their troubles solved.”

The top seller was the dam of Gr1 performer and millionaire Matador Man, Sahara (Mogok), who sold in foal to the now Clifton stallion, Crusade. She was knocked down as lot 17 to Gary and Colleen de Klerk’s Summerview Stud for R170 000.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-8398" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/CAN_0016.jpg" alt="Sahara sold in foal to Crusade to Summerview Stud for R170 000.
The family was in demand with Sahara’s unnamed weanling filly, lot 78, a full-sister to Matador Man (Toreador), selling to Robinson Racing for R125 000.

Lot 83, a weanling Mogok half-sister to Talktothestars, was knocked down to Coenie De Beer for R80 000.

Crusade relocated to Clifton Stud the day after the dispersal, and will stand for a fee of R20 000 (including R5000 nomination).

Robin and Des Scott donated the beautiful trophy for the KZN Breeders Million Mile, a race they won in 2017 with Matador Man.

We wish Des, Joyce and Robin Scott a happy retirement and all the best for the future.

Over a half century of producing champion racehorses culminates in the end of an era for South African horseracing and breeding when the Scott Bros hold their Total Dispersal Sale at Highdown Stud in the foothills of the Drakensberg on Tuesday.

Well-bred Weanlings, yearlings and broodmares – some in foal to top sires- make up the 147 strong catalogue.

In the top echelon of SA breeding for decades, the Scott Bros have introduced an unprecedented depth of foundation mares into our ranks and this sale thus offers breeders a rare opportunity to tap into high-quality winner producing bloodlines.

Household names and Arcsa and Equus champions of the ilk of Politician, La Fabulous, Teal and Ipi Tombe are just a few of those that went on to great things to lift the silverware for most of South Africa’s greatest races.
