Voted KZN Breeders Horse Of The Year in 2015, Yellow Star-born Futura has his first crop of yearlings on offer in 2019 and saw a colt, bred by Ridgemont Highlands, knocked down to Peter Doyle and Diane Nagel for R1,2-million. Futura was bred by Guy Murdoch.

Consigned as Lot 123 and aptly named Warrior, the handsome colt is out of a Commands mare, from the family of Zodiac Ruler and Lasserfaire. The Australian bred dam is a Stakes Winner with two race wins to her record.

<img decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-9074" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Futura_2017_edited.jpg" alt="Futura at Drakenstein Stud.
Futura stands at stud at Drakenstein, interestingly alongside another KZN Breeders Horse Of The Year (both by Dynasty) in the diminutive multiple Gr1 winner, Beach Beauty.

Futura was named National Horse Of The Year in 2015, versatile with 9 wins from 1200m – 2000m, including the Gr1 Queen’s Plate, the then Gr1 J&B Met, and the Gr1 Champions Cup twice. He earned over R4,3-million in stakes.

By Dynasty, he is out of a Badger’s Drift mare Scribblin’ The Cat, in turn out of a Western Winter mare.

A triple Equus Champion, at one point Futura was ranked 7th in 2015 LONGINES World’s Best Racehorse Rankings – a phenomenal achievement. He stood for a fee of R20 000 in 2018.

Yellow Star Stud have the honour of foaling two multiple Gr1 winners in their barn – Futura, and Dancewiththedevil.

Keep an eye on our news for more to come on this five-time winning Gr1 mare.

KZN breeders based in Nottingham Road, Rathmor Stud, topped the buyers list at the CTS Premier Yearling Sale –purchasing 13 lots for a total of R6 725 000. Seven of the thirteen yearlings were colts – which included a full brother to Chimichuri Run (out of #kznbred Gr1 winner Spiced Gold, bred by Greenhill Farm).

The top purchase they made was for Lot 199 from Hemel ‘n Arde, a Captain Al filly from a family that descends from Summerhill Stud. They paid R800 000 for the beautiful filly, a half-sister to 2-time winner and Stakes Placed La Ferrari. This is also the family of Mercury Rising and Winning Leap.

Their top priced colt purchased was by new Klawervlei Tapit sire Coup De Grace. Rathmor paid R750 000 for the colt out of Windjammer by Casey Tibbs. The dam has produced three winners including multiple winner Bermuda Sloop, and this is a family that goes back to Rathmor’s roots – which produced the greats such as Wendywood, Malteme, Bezanova and Power King.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-9070" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/224-windjammer.jpg" alt="Lot 224 by Coup De Grace, sold to Rathmor for R750 000.
In total, 192 of the 217 yearlings on offer were sold for R84 235, and the lots to sell averaged R436,450, with the median staying steady at R300 000.

Wéhann Smith, CEO of CTS, said that he was most encouraged by a fantastic turnout and a varied buyer’s bench.

He said: “The Convention Centre was packed, there was a good atmosphere and we had plenty of buyers from all over the country and overseas.”

While the turnover was significantly down on the 2018 figure (when 30 additional lots went through the ring), Smith said: “Vendors across the board were happy with their returns. We are very pleased with continued and growing overseas interest. We had 18 yearlings that fetched R1-million or more.

“If there is to be a negative, it is that our average price per yearling was down from last year’s R699,000 to R436,000, but we had a real sale here, no smoke and mirrors. The figures were a good reflection of a good, solid auction. If some of the R1,5-million or R2-million yearlings went for just a littke more, the average price would have been markedly higher.

“Overall, however, we are happy with what was achieved and we thank our vendors and buyers for their valued support.”

Rathmor again have a superb draft of yearlings headed to Nationals this year, including a smart Captain Al and a Frankel amongst others.

The list of purchases by Rathmor Stud below. Well done to the team at Rathmor.

In a further effort to further boost the blue-blooded broodmare band for young stallion Noble Tune, Rathmor Stud for the second time headed the buyers list at the CTS Breeding Stock Sale by purchasing Lot 269 Queen Of Spain (IRE) for the sales topping R2,6-million, with a Frankel foal at foot and in foal to first season sire, William Longsword.

Last year, Rathmor purchased a daughter of Henrythenavigator in foal to Dynasty for R2,4-million and she foaled a magnificent colt. She is currently in foal to Noble Tune.

Queen Of Spain, a daughter of Holy Roman Emperor out of Starlight Dreams by Black Tie Affair, is from the damline of Sakhee and her dam is a half-sister to three time Gr1 winning Mastercraftsman. The mare Queen Of Spain has produced two previous foals by Galileo and High Chapparal.

Amongst Rathmor’s exceptional broodmare band is the likes of African Love, Mitra, Azure Sky, Mystery Dame (Lady In Black), Eventual Angel, Summer Angel (dam of Eventual Angel and Exit Here), Golden Earings, Royal Aspen, Kiribati, Misty River, Chiquita and Victory Garden.

Rathmor also purchased a single filly off of the CTS Cape Premier Yearling Sale – a Flower Alley half-sister to A Women’s Way and Gr1 2nd placed Ancestory, bred by Avontuur Stud. Named White Lace and consigned as Lot 183, this is the female line of Breyani.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-7613" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/White-Lace-300x214.jpg" alt="White Lace, her future is destined for the broodmare paddocks of Rathmor Stud.
A Women’s Way is a Gr2 winner owned by another KZN Breeder in partnership, Bruce Le Roux and Tinus Gericke. The daughter of Var is destined for the paddocks of Spring Valley Stud at the end of her career.

Rathmor paid R400 000 for the daughter of a sire that produced I’ll Have Another, a winner of two legs of the American Triple Crown and a sire in Japan.

Keep a look out for Rathmor’s exceptional draft at the 2018 National Yearling Sale.

KZN broodmares featured in the CTS Cape Premier Yearling Sale, headed up by the first produce sold out of KZN Breeders Horse Of The Year, Beach Beauty from breeders Drakenstein Stud.

Her athletic Trippi colt was knocked down for R2,5-million to John Freeman.

Others to feature on the second day included Gr2 winner Eastern Greeting, bred by the Kjell Foundation. The full sister to Kalaam and Kwinta saw her Var colt sold to Paul Peter for R250 000.

Overall, the sale sold 221 horses from 254 catalogued, for an average of R504 411 each. The top seller was R4-million for a Frankel colt.

KZN is represented by four horses on the CTS Cape Premier Yearling Sale and saw Summerhill sell their outstanding and well-bred Silvano filly for R500 000.

The unnamed filly came through early in the sale as Lot 6, and is out of a Fastnet Rock mare that is a half-sister to Summerhill’s former sire Bankable and Gr3 winner, Cheshire. She was knocked down to prominent KZN owner Mary Liley and her trainer Tony Rivalland.

Summerhill’s next Lot of the day saw Kamadeva, from the first crop of Capetown Noir and a half-brother to Gr1 winner Love Struck and Fakazi, sell for R225 000 to Central Route Trading. Dam Particular Passion, by Rambo Dancer, has produced eight winners to date and hails from the family of Anytime Baby and Thandolwami.

Other KZN-associated results saw KZN-bred broodmares feature – amongst them Lot 43, a Silvano colt named King Saladin out of Kinematic Countess who sold for R750 000 to John Freeman, bred and consigned by Maine Chance Farms. Kinematic Countess born and raised at Spring Valley Stud for breeder Pierre Du Toit, is an 8-time winner including taking the Gr3 Sycamore Sprint twice.

Another to feature was Las Ramblas, a daughter of Toreador who saw her Gimmethegreenlight colt sold for R525 000 from Highlands Farm Part Of Ridgemont. She sold to Mick Flanagan, a winner herself of five races including the Michael Roberts Listed.

Yellow Star’s internationally renowned broodmare sire Spectrum had a grandson by Captain Al sell as Lot 58 for R1-million. Team Valor’s Barry Irwin signed for the colt from the family of Successful Bidder, Gold Flier and Trust Antonia. Spectrum, who currently resides at Yellow Star Stud is the broodmare sire of UK stallion Dutch Art, Up, and Moonlight Cloud – who almost ended Black Caviar’s victorious run at Royal Ascot.

The sale continues tonight at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from 1pm this afternoon, where KZN-bred Jinger Jack, a Capetown Noir half-brother to Gr3 winner Royal Pleasure will come through the ring as Lot 125 from Summerhill Stud.
Almosthaditall, who made South African breeding news headlines when she sold for a sales topping R2,4-million to Rathmor Stud, is at home in Nottingham Road in foal to Noble Tune, with an outstanding Dynasty colt at foot.

[view pedigree page]

A daughter of four time Gr1 winner and 2000 Guineas winner Henrythenavingator, she sold at the time in foal to Dynasty and topped the charts at the CTS Mares, Weanlings & Fillies for stud Select Sale held at Highlands.

Allmosthaditall (USA) is a winner in Ireland with a previous foal by Rock Of Gibraltar in 2015 and a Galileo foal since.

She is out of a Storm Cat / Mr Prospector mare, from the damline of Gr1 winner Mastery and sire Miswaki.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-7531" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/KK8A5642-allmosthaditall.jpg" alt="Allmosthaditall at Rathmor Stud.
Henrythenavigator is the sire in South Africa of Gr2 Betting World 1900 winner Ten Gun Salute, and his winning daughter Almosthaditall is a half-sister to Gr2 winner and successful US sire Jump Start and to the dam of retired and undefeated Gr1 winner Mastery.

Rathmor have bolstered Noble Tune’s book significantly with outstanding mares, including purchasing the likes of Mystery Dame (dam of Gr1 winner Lady In Black), Summer Angel (Eventual Angel and Exit Here), Azure Sky and African Love amongst them all.

At the National Yearling Sale in 2017, Rathmor sold the full brother to Lady In Black for R1,7-million, as well as a Silvano and Captain Al for R700 000 each respectively out of Royal Aspen and Kiribati.

Keep a look out for an athletic Captain Al filly and the beautiful Oratorio sibling to Lady In Black at the 2018 BSA National Yearling Sale.

Rathmor also have an outstanding Noble Tune filly consigned out of Free Parking by Silvano, who oozes plenty of quality and class, and a beautiful Silvano yearling on offer amongst their eyecatching draft.

Rathmor Stud have significantly boosted their broodmare band and we look forward to the winners to come from them in the future.

The 2018 Cape Premier Yearling Sale from Cape Thoroughbred Sales takes place from 20-21 January at the Cape International Convention Centre.

Amongst the star studded catalogue of yearlings by Frankel and Camelot, KZN is represented by Summerhill Stud which includes the first crop of Capetown Noir, and a single entry by Noble Tune – the latter bred and consigned by Ascot Stud.

Lot 197 named Streets Of Fire by Noble Tune, is out of Avenue Of Gold by Albert Hall. This is the mares second produce, she herself is a Gr3 winner amongst her three victories from 2200m to 3200m. This is the damline of Enchanted Garden and Dog Wood.

Noble Tune’s top selling yearling sold for R350 000 consigned by Piemonte Stud in 2017, and the young stallion bred in the purple has already had three places from four juvenile runners over 800m dashes.

South Africa’s leading breeder for ten years, Summerhill Stud, are represented by four lots – amongst them, siblings of two Gr1 winners including Love Struck and Rabada.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-3646" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/noble_tune_600x320-300x160.jpg" alt="Noble Tune winning the Gr2 American Stakes on Turf. He is represented by a filly bred and consigned by Ascot Stud.

The other is a Capetown Noir half-sibling to Gr3 winner Royal Pleasure (Lot 125 Jinger Jack), and Lot 6 should attract plenty of attention with paddock value – a Silvano filly, out of a Fastnet Rock half-sister to former Summerhill sire, Bankable.

Lot 97 Kamadeva is a Capetown Noir half-brother to Love Struck and Fakazi. The dam Particular Passion has been another phenomenon at stud, producing eight winners from nine foals produced. She is a half-sister to 6-time winner Thandolwami, from the damline of Anytime Baby.

An outstanding foal at Summerhill who stood out from the others, Jordie’s Trippi colt will go through the ring as Lot 38, named Hurricane Harry.

A half-brother to twice Gr1 winner Rabada, the quality colt is from the damline of Naan Khataay. Jordie is also the dam of River Tyne (by Stronghold), a 4-time winner who placed in the Ladies Slipper Listed. River Tyne is currently a resident broodmare of Lee Scribante’s Piemonte Stud.

Glider Pilot, a handsome grey son of AP Arrow with half an ear missing that had to be surgically removed, almost followed in his Gr1 winning half-brothers footsteps when he placed fourth in the Gr1 Daily News 2000 behind Edict Of Nantes. He had won on debut over 2000m, and has placed from only three career starts.

With KZN only possessing 18% of the broodmare band nationally, Summerhill Stud are once again achieving outstanding results this season with 72 winners in hand, lying second on the National breeders log by Stakes Earned.

Summerhill have produced more winners this season (nine ahead of the second placed farm according to current nhra stats -3 December) than any other stud in the top 10 breeders log. There is a thought that you can predict what is to come in the future based on the past – if Summerhill’s ten year leading breeder accolades are anything to go by, their draft is to be respected.

The magnificent Capetown Noir had eight wins, including three Gr1’s – the Queen’s Plate, Cape Guineas and Cape Derby amongst them.

He also won the Gr3 Byerley Turk and Matchem Stakes. By Western Winter, who is excelling at stud with What A Winter, he is out Akinfeet by Champion broodmare sire Fort Wood and has let down into a striking stallion.

Capetown Noir was scheduled to stand for R20 000 again this season, but with the current negative economic climate Summerhill made the decision to reduce their stallion fees for the season to assist in lowering costs to Thoroughbred breeders.

The CTS Ready To Run Sale took place recently in Cape Town and saw amongst its graduates a half-sibling to KZN-bred Gr1 winner Brave Mary knocked down for R240 000, consigned by Soetendal Estate and purchased by Champion Trainer Sean Tarry. The chestnut filly is by leading first season sire Await The Dawn.

Their dam Mary Lou has relocated after being purchased by Cheveley Stud earlier this year.

KZN pretrainer Jane Thomas took down a quality draft, amongst them a half-sister to the brilliant multiple Equus Horse Of The Year, Legal Eagle. The filly by Pomodoro sold for R220 000 to Rainbow Beach Trading.

Another horse of interest to KZN was Drakenstein-consigned Big Blue Marble as Lot 102.

The Var colt is out of Backworth-bred 8-time winner Raise The Bar, a daughter of exceptional broodmare sire Goldkeeper who flew the flag brightly for Backworth Stud in her heyday. Her first foal is already Bold Black Type, the Gimmethegreenlight filly Rose In Bloom winning the Irridescence Stakes and Stakes Placed. The colt sold for R850 000 to Mark Erasmus.

Another Backworth family that caught attention is the Var colt Vartanium, out of Refined Gold by Rich Man’s Gold. Refined Gold is the dam of multiple winner Karatage, Mauritian horse Alloy and the well-bred Rathmor broodmare, Spangle. He sold for R320 000 to Rainbow Beach Trading.

From 149 Lots catalogued, 129 sold for an average of R236,279 each. Congratulations to Jane Thomas who averaged R203,750 for 12 Lots sold. Well done to all concerned.

“Whereas in the past CTS offered six sales for yearlings and two year olds, we have now consolidated them into three sales.

TRUE to its dynamic and progressive nature, the Cape Thoroughbred Sales Company (CTS) has announced a number of enterprising plans for implementation, including a major rationalisation of the sales programme.
Adrian Todd, MD of CTS, said that the company has spent several months considering suggestions for industry progress and less onerous sales schedules from major role players. Discussions in this regard have also been held with BloodStock SA.

Todd explained: “Market sentiment has been that there have simply been too many sales. CTS will be streamlining its 2018 Auction Sales Programme in the interest of rationalising the events calendar as well as enhanced service and convenience to buyers and sellers.

“Whereas in the past CTS offered six sales for yearlings and two year olds, we have now consolidated them into three sales. The new format provides buyers and vendors with every level of sales platform, from a select offering for later developing horses, to a value session with low costs to buyers and sellers for value buys.”

The restructuring entails:

The Cape Premier Yearling Sale (CPYS) will remain in its attractive January slot

The CTS March Yearling Sale will be integrated with April’s CTS Emperors Palace Select Yearling Sale to form a single Sale in April 2018. The combined sale will be held in the Cape and will comprise of three sessions:

2.1 Select Session 1: An evening select session, catering for quality later developing horses.
2.2 Session 2: The second session caters for a quality selection of the old CTS March yearling
draft. Horses from both of these sessions qualify for the CTS Millions.
2.3 Session 3: A value session that will provide value buys for owners and a solid platform for
vendors upon which to enter their value stock, not qualifying for the CTS Millions.
3. November’s Lanzerac Ready To Run Sale remains in place.

Todd announced two further initiatives.

CTS has acquired a major share of fast-growing Kuda Holdings and Todd said: “This is a strategic partnership. Wehann Smith of Kuda, who has built the company in admirable fashion, will remain at the helm of the operation. Furthermore, Wehann has been tasked with identifying potential operational synergies between Kuda and CTS.”

As a result of these synergies, Todd himself will be devoting more of his time on the pressing and all-important issues surrounding bloodstock export protocols and CTS Chairman Chris van Niekerk explains: “The Export Task Team comprises of role players across the board who have made significant progress in the last two years. We’ve come a long way in consolidating the efforts of the racing and breeding industries along with veterinarians and now we need to drive our combined efforts over the line in what is arguably the most important matter in the history of the combined industry. This is a vital juncture for all of us.”
