Monthly sales will be held hereafter on the first Friday of every month, closing the following Thursday at midday, and will be open to the entire spectrum from weanlings, yearlings, broodmares to unraced and horses-in-training.

Top seller of the inaugural edition was the ‘select mare’ of the June sale catalogue in many people’s opinion.

Petala seen winning the Gr3 Kenilworth Fillies Nursery in 2015

Petala (#23) is a stakes winning Captain Al half-sister to the well performed Doublemint and was snapped up by Summerview Stud for R114 000.

Petala won three races, including the 2015 Gr3 Kenilworth Fillies Nursery, in the care of Justin Snaith.

She is out of the Tale Of The Cat mare, Nepeta and was bred by Alec Foster, who also raced her in the family’s very familiar scarlet and gold silks.

Summerview’s Colleen de Klerk was thrilled with the purchase and said that the decision to buy was motivated by an intention to upgrade  their current broodmare band.

She gave a thumbs up to the new online platform and said it was ‘both user friendly and exceptionally convenient’.

The scenically beautiful Summerview Stud is nestled in a quiet lane in the middle of Summerveld, and is owned by Colleen and her husband, Gary De Klerk.

The De Klerk’s neighbour, leading breeder Lee Scribante of Piemonte Stud, said that Petala ticked all the boxes and congratulated them on an astute buy.

Scribante also said that the streamlined simplicity and convenience of the sales platform means that even the ‘senior generation’ could use it without aggravation or fear of complications.

“Internationally, it’s been proven to be the way of the future and once market acceptance is there and conditions improve, I have no doubt that it will become the norm,” said Scribante.

Bringing two siblings to Gr1 winners to the sale, its no surprise that the Willow Magic sister to Gr1 winner Hero’s Honour and Gr1 2nd placed Railtrip topped the #kznbreds on sale – knocked down to Pizzaz Racing for R325 000, Lot 54 named Toocoolforschool.

Her dam Grail Maiden, a daughter of Galileo, has produced 4 runners and 4 winners – her now three year old by Capetown Noir, named Enoble, is now an unbeaten 2yo in Kenya. He was bought by a close relative to the Late Princess Diana, Mr Spencer at this sale last year.

Jane Thomas’ Far End Farm sold the second highest Lot of the sale, a Dynasty colt purchased off Book 1 at the beginning of the year. Beautifully named Steeplechase, he was sold to Dean Kannemeyer for R600 000.

In more KZN associated news, the top seller overall came from Ndoro Stud, with a flashy son of #kznbred Futura (born at Yellow Star Stud for breeder Guy Murdoch) knocked down to international firm Eibloodstock for R1,3-million. The colt will enter training with Brett Crawford, who trained also trained Futura.

Futura by Dynasty, who stands at Drakenstein Stud, topped the sale as a stallion, selling 3 lots for an average of over R530 000 each.

Watching Closely (Lot 3) is a filly by short-lived G1 Middle Park Stakes winner, and prolific sire of juvenile talent, Crusade.
This filly, a half-sister to two winners, is out of a four time winning Kahal own sister to Sea Cottage Stakes winner Fenerbahce, and Watching Closely is bred on the same Crusade/Kahal cross as the very classy Butchie Boy.

The well related Crusade (he was a half-brother to a dual Oaks winner) is also sire of Northern Warrior (Lot 113), with the latter being a son of classy stakes winner Roc ‘N Rose.

Champion Action (Lot 24) is a colt by Eightfold Path, with the latter sharing his sire Giant’s Causeway with current sire sensation Shamardal. This colt is a half-brother to five winners notably Queen Palm Handicap heroine Roc ‘N Rose and further back this is the family of Met winning champion Mark Anthony.

Proven sire Philanthropist, who has been responsible for stakes winners in all of Canada, Hong Kong, South Africa and Zimbabwe, is responsible for a colt (Lot 89) whose dam is a ¾ sister to multiple Equus Champion Nhlavini, while proven G1 sire St Petersburg is sire of Winter Monarch (Lot 92) –a filly whose dam is a half-sister to Woolavington Cup winner Music Of Time.

Dynasty sired Horse Of The Year Irish Flame is the sire of Irish Bru (Lot 111), a half-brother to two multiple winners including the smart Pillaroftheearth. This colt’s granddam was an Australian stakes winning daughter of Golden Slipper victor Pago Pago, and this is the family of G1 Perth Cup winner Meliador.

Summerhill Sales will be offering an 11 strong draft at this month’s Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale, which takes place in Germiston on April 24^th to 26^th.
Remarkably, each and every yearling in the Summerhill draft was sired by a G1 winner!

Summerhill Stud’s well performed Dubawi horse Willow Magic dominates this draft, with the former G1 SA Nursery winner the sire of seven of the Summerhill Sales’ yearlings. Willow Magic’s first crop of yearlings on offer include Hot Poppi (Lot 248), a filly whose seven time winning dam is a ¾ sister to champion sprinter Mythical Flight,  Look Of Eagles (Lot 341) –a colt from the family of Australian champion Faint Perfume, and Willow’s Wish (Lot 356). The latter is a colt out of the Kahal sired Fillies Guineas winner Fisani, from the same female line as Epsom Derby winners Sir Percy and Teenoso.

Willow Magic is also responsible for Willy The Wizard (Lot 374), a colt whose dam is a winning half-sister to the above mentioned Fisani, a half-brother (Lot 383) to four winners including G3 Flamboyant Stakes runner up Lala, a half-brother (Lot 426) to the very smart performer Euphoria, and a filly (Lot 461) from the immediate family of Kentucky Derby winner Go For Gin.

Champion sire Trippi, whose recent notable winners include the impressive G3 Byerley Turk winner Tristful, is the sire of Rite Of Passage (Lot 530), whose G3 placed dam is a Var half-sister to G3 Scottsville Stakes winner Dazzling Heights. The blue blooded Rite Of Passage hails from one of the best families in the stud book, with his numerous high class relatives including champion US sire Exclusive Native and the international G1 winners Poet’s Voice, General Assembly, and Versailles Treaty.

Dynasty’s G1 Cape Guineas winner Act Of War has two members of his first crop on offer –a colt (Lot 301) out of a winning half-sister to G1 SA Classic hero Love Struck, and a half-sister (Lot 510) to G3 Strelitzia Stakes winner Royal Pleasure.

Another Cape Guineas winning sire represented in the Summerhill draft is Summerhill’s very promising Equus Champion Capetown Noir, whose early runners include the classy filly Brandina. The triple G1 winning Capetown Noir (himself a former National Sale graduate) is represented by a colt (Lot 545) whose stakes placed dam is from the same female line as G1 winners Shoe Express, The Sheik, Top Seller and legendary champion Politician.

Bruce and Delia le Roux’s Spring Valley Stud will be offering 11 quality yearlings at this year’s Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale in Germiston.

One of the picks of the draft is the Querari filly (Lot 39) whose G2 SA Oaks winning dam Bedloe’s Island is a Fort Wood half-sister to two G1 winners.

Four time winner Kileigh, a three-parts sister to Triple Crown winner Abashiri, has a choicely bred Master Of My Fate filly (Lot 116), while Silver Fantasy, a stakes winning Silvano half-sister to G1 Cape Fillies Guineas winner Indiscreet Fantasy, is represented in the draft by a  Flower Alley filly (Lot 217).

Master Of My Fate is also represented in this draft by a filly (Lot 103) out of a stakes placed winner of seven, while multiple Equus Champion What A Winter is also doubly represented, with his pair including a filly (Lot 309) out of a 3 time winning half-sister to G2 winner Silver Age.

Over The Bay (Lot 330) is a colt by champion and exciting sire Twice Over whose dam is a full-sister to the dam of East Cape champion Widow’s Lamp and this is also the family of Equus Champion National Bay.

Princess Phee (Lot 295) is a filly from the first crop of Horse Of The Year and four time G1 winner Futura, and this half-sister to the useful Aranjuez is out of a 3 time winning own sister to G2 winner Lazer Star.

Young Galileo sire Flying The Flag has two members of his first crop in the Spring Valley draft, including a filly (Lot 378) whose dam is a full-sister to top class racemare Cover Look.

Summerhill Stud, acting as Summerhill Sales as Agent, will be offering 64 two-year-olds at Sunday’s Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale.

Set to be held at the TBA complex in Germiston, the one day auction gets underway this weekend at 14:00 pm sharp, with the sale due to be conducted by auctioneers Graeme Hawkins and Andrew Miller.

Mooi River farm Summerhill Stud dominate the Ready To Run catalogue and offer nearly 60% of the 109 lots catalogued.

Among their draft are lots by such high profile stallions as Duke Of Marmalade, Querari, Silvano, Trippi, Visionaire and Vercingetorix, while Summerhill’s resident sire Capetown Noir, a triple G1 winning son of multiple champion sire Western Winter, has 15 members of his first crop on offer in the Summerhill draft.

One horse in this draft sure to attract attention is Hurricane Harry, catalogued as lot 85. He is a son of  Trippi, whose recent winners included the graded victors Chimichuri Run and Love To Boogie. Hurricane Harry, who is out of the winning Fard mare Jordie, is a half-brother to 3 winners notably new Summerhill sire Rabada –whose victories included both the G1 Premiers Champion Stakes and G1 Daily News 2000.

Another colt bound to catch the eye is the Duke Of Marmalade son The Sandwich Man, Lot 91 (footage). This colt, whose sire was responsible for both the second and third in Saturday’s G2 Western Cape Fillies Championship on Saturday, is out of the high class Rambo Dancer mare Lisa Anne, who won three and who finished third in the G1 Empress Club Stakes.

At stud, Lisa Anne made her mark through the deeds of her daughter Takingthepeace (a R280 000 buy from the Ready To Run Sale in 2016), who won two of the three legs of South Africa’s Triple Tiara last season for the Mike de Kock yard.

Takingthepeace’s G1 King’s Bishop Stakes winning sire Visionaire also has a very classy bunch in the Summerhill Ready To Run draft. They include Riding The Crest (Lot 19) – a half-brother to four stakes horses notably G1 Summer Cup runner up Shogunnar, Final Tribute (Lot 22) – a half-sister to multiple stakes winning filly Salutation, and Thandekhile (Lot43). The latter is a daughter of Thekwini Stakes winner Bridal Paths and is a full-sister to the recent Brett Crawford trained winner Bestday Of Mylife.

The possibly pick of Capetown Noir’s 15 strong contingent in the Summerhill draft is Ennoble (Lot 73). This is a colt with a very powerful pedigree – Ennoble being a half-brother to Gary Alexander Racing Stables’ 2018 G1 SA Derby winner Hero’s Honour and last season’s G1 Thekwini Stakes runner up Railtrip, trained by Chesney van Zyl Racing.

Ennoble also hails from the same family as such international standouts as Kingman, Oasis Dream, Beat Hollow and New Bay – to name a few.

Summerhill will also be offering siblings to such notable graded winners as Royal Pleasure, Winning Leap, and The Thinker as well as number of other high class stakes performers.

The superbly bred Equus Champion Capetown Noir is strongly represented in the Summerhill Sales draft at the 2018 Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale, which is due to take place at the TBA complex on November 4^th.

The Thoroughbred Breeders Association and Bloodstock South Africa held a seminar for the KZN Breeders Club recently to discuss the scoring of mares for the National Yearling Sale.

A number of examples of mares currently at stud were given of both suitable and unsuitable prospects, and how the panel chose the pedigrees and scored accordingly. Amongst them, Jehan Malherbe gave Sahara a 4, the dam of Matador Man recently sold to Gary and Colleen De Klerk of Summerview Stud (scores are from 1-5).

Jehan advised breeders to be mindful and use the scoring as a guideline, drawing comparisons to lesser bred fillies with better race records, and better bred fillies with perhaps not as inform race records, but well related – breeders must take into account what they have produced, and how many foals produced to date in relation to their success at stud.

Jehan also covered the various strengths of mare’s catalogue pages, who had progeny racing in overseas jurisdictions such as Kenya, Mauritius, Singapore, Hong Kong and Zimbabwe, and why some information couldnt be shown due to racing standards – such as Kenya.

“Singapore and Hong Kong will count. An example is the Hong Kong Gr1 race that Singapore Sling won – its an International Listed race, but a Gr1 in Hong Kong. The QE II on the other hand, Champions Mile and Champions Cup are proper international Gr1’s from Hong Kong. The rest are considered to be Listed races from an international standard. In the catalogue we would show either as a Listed race, or “HK-Gr1″. Kenya dont have Black Type races at all. We have to conform to international cataloguing standards and we have international buyers attending our sales. We can mention at special request to add in if a horse won the Kenyan Oaks, but it will not be in Black Type.”

“If you have to look up to the third dam to find quality, it is not Nationals quality. A mare who scores 1.5 is not Nationals quality and will be excluded, however, if you have a mare that is a 1.5 and a colt that is 9 from a very good  Top 5 stallion, we will review it.” It was also important to review as a breeder, if the family in the first 3 dams has been successfully active in the past 10 years.

“When the entries arrive, we have 500 spots open and 350 horses score 15 points and above, and that is our cut off point – they will all be on the sale as they immediately qualify. From 13.5 to 14.5 will be considered and from there on, its by invitation only for the balance of the places available.” Jehan also gave examples of first season sires represented at the sales and the points allocated, and said the list of sires and their points will be available on the TBA website for breeders to view and plan ahead. All stallions start of on 2.5.

If he is a local Gr1 winner, he gets a 3. If he is an international Gr1 winner, he will get a 3.5. If he has an exceptional pedigree, he will get another half a point for pedigree. If you breed a mare that is a 4.5 to a stallion thats a 2.5, you will get on the sale. All first season sires are considered.

If you send a mare that is a 5 to a stallion who is a low score, and breeds a 9 yearling, it has to get on the sale as there is more than 14 points and it will be sold. Jehan also advised breeders not to send all mares to first season sires, as only 1 in 20 make it. He also advised to send mares to big sires to keep individual sales drafts balanced.

Jehan emphasised that breeders must not be scared to talk to the selectors – “we are not here to to fail or pass you, we are here to try and work together to put the right horses on the right sale. Listen to the selectors if they assess that a yearling will be better on a later sale.”

Chris Haynes and Jane Thomas of Bloodstock South Africa were on hand to discuss sales and yearling inspection and selection questions, whilst Catherine Hartley of the TBA also addressed all present and gave an update on the Studbook.
