Backworth’s beautifully bred stallion Talk Of The Town, standing at Avontuur Stud in the Cape, got off the mark as a sire with his first juvenile winner under his belt for trainer Alson Ndzilana.

Based at Randjesfontein, it was the first debut winner for trainer Alson Ndzilana, a former assistant to Joey Ramsden and Mike de Kock.

Talk Of The Town showed huge promise, winning three of his five starts before injury curtailed what was anticipated to be a glittering racing career.

Aptly named Famous Lady, the debut winning filly is out of Lady Val by High Chapparal bred by Kilimanjaro Bloodstock.

Talk Of The Town by multiple Gr1 producing sire Var is bred by Eston-based stud Backworth, out of a Street Cry mare Street Wise.

It is a leading female line, and includes the likes of Redoute’s Choice and Manhattan Rain under the third dam.

Keith Russon and Ian Todd’s Backworth Stud had a super double at Greyville yesterday, with the smart Var filly Extravargant (a full sister to winner Cuvara) taking it for Mrs Mary Liley, who is enjoying a purple patch of late, and Noble Tune gelding Romanesca winning for trainer Paul Lafferty.

Whilst Backworth have reduced their boutique stud, their influence is remains prominent with several of their fillies they have produced over the years finding their way into the National Yearling Sales catalogues as broodmares at farms nationwide, and recent Group winner, the smart Rose In Bloom who sold this week for R800 000, out of Backworth-bred mare Raise The Bar – a family that gave Backworth many years of success and doesn’t look like it will be ending anytime soon.

It is a testament to the quality of mares and depth of pedigrees Backworth always procured for their beautiful farm in Eston, and giving the mares opportunities to excel at stud with the best suited stallion no matter where they stood.

Extravargant, out of a mare that sold for R800 000 – Cupid’s Daughter – looks to be an exciting prospect for Tony Rivalland and Mary Liley (owned in partnership with Sadha Naidoo) for the upcoming season. The #kznbred filly has now won twice from three starts and placed second on debut. Mary Liley has been seen frequently in the winners enclosure of late with her familiar pink and green silks, and she has been an avid support of Backworth’s stock over the years, racing many to multiple wins and success.

<img decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-9212" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/R3-ROMANESCA.jpg" alt="Romanesca by Noble Tune. Image: Candiese Marnewick

Mrs Liley has earned over R800 000 in stakes this season with almost a 16% winners to runners percentage.

Romanesca by Noble Tune, a handsome yearling purchased from Backworth’s Dispersal sale a few years back, is out of an Elusive Quality mare and as Paul Lafferty states, the gelding dislikes the Polytrack going but fired impressively on the turf going away by over a length from Just As Well gelding, Just Prime.

He has placed three times previously. Paul, who had a great day with a double including the Kings Cup, went to say that he has several Noble Tune’s in his yard and is very happy with them – his other is the grey Gr2 preformed and Black Type White Lightning.

There are several Noble Tune’s on offer at the upcoming National Yearling Sale, including a half-brother to Gr1 winner, Lady In Black.

Well done to all concerned!

Group 1 winning mare from South Africa produced an impressive winner for Fastnet Rock and Lindsay Park at Cranbourne on Sunday and the three year old has a bright future.

Notation (Fastnet Rock), a filly out of Group 1 winning mare Chocolicious (SAF), was a 3.25 length winner of the opening race over a 1300m.

Notation is part-owned by Coolmore, a $240,000 weanling buy in 2016.

Ben Hayes, who trains the pair in partnership with his father David and cousin Tom Dabernig, was especially impressed with Notation, who had won on debut at Geelong two weeks’ ago and predicted she would step up to back-type company next time out.

“The way she won today was really, really good and it’s really exciting and we’ll probably go for black type next start now,” Hayes said.

“The way she won, she had plenty in the tank on the line. We’ll step her out to 1400m over Melbourne Cup week and she’ll be very hard to beat in that.”

Notation is the second foal from Chocolicious, who won the G1 Allan Robertson Championship at Scottsville as a 2-year-old. The first filly by Frankel (GB) sold for $610,000 as a yearling and went to South Africa, while she also has a 2-year-old by Exceed and Excel and recently foaled a full brother to Notation.

Broodmare sire Kahal, who stood at Bush Hill Stud prior to his passing, has produced a Gr3 winner in Australia as a broodmare sire through his daughter Noble Heir.

Bush Hill Stud also stand Curved Ball, the first son of Fastnet Rock to stand at stud in South Africa.

Backworth-bred Talk Of The Town has changed ownership and didnt disappoint, winning his third on the trot for Avontuur Estate (Pty) Ltd (Nom: Mr M J B Taberer), Mr K P Truter & Mrs Jane Truter on Friday at Kenilworth.

The KZN-bred with a stallions pedigree is a son of Var, out of the magnificent chestnut mare Street Wise (NZ), a daughter of Street Cry.

Talk Of The Town sold for R3-million at under Avontuur’s banner at the CTS Emperors Palace Select Yearling Sale and is trained by Joey Ramsden.

The backworth.co.za website says: “There is nothing like pressure and expectation to fuel interest and it’s very early days to suggest he is a possible successor to his champion Dad – but there is a certain royalty about this handsome fellow’s demeanor and he now has to go on and stamp his authority on the track.”

His great grand-dam is the outstanding Nijinsky II mare Dancing Show – a half-sister to former South African Champion sire and broodmare sire, Northern Guest.

Dancing Show is granddam of the great Redoute’s Choice – sire of Rafeef, Wylie Hall, Time Thief and Redoute’s Promise, amongst others.

Dancing Show is also the third dam of Saturday’s Gr1 Myer Classic winner Shoals at Flemington.

Backworth Stud enjoyed a great weekend’s racing with their talented Var winning at Kenilworth, whilst Love Theme by Oratorio flew home for her first maiden win at Scottsville yesterday.

Talk Of The Town, who sold for R3-million at the CTS Select Yearling Sale, has now won both of his previous starts and placed from all four.

Trained by Joey Ramsden, the eye catching chestnut colt is impeccably bred out of a Street Cry mare and hails from a strong family that includes super sires Redoute’s Choice, Al Maher, Manhattan Rain (sire of Whisky Baron) and Hurricane Sky. Carrying top weight of 61.5kgs, Talk Of The Town won over 1400m under Anton Marcus by a length. An exciting future awaits this smart classical looking colt.

Love Theme followed up on Sunday for owners and breeders Bruce Le Roux and Tinus Gericke. The eyecatching Oratorio filly, who originally was to be sold alongside Talk Of The Town and got injured which saw those plans withdrawn, was offered later at the KZN Yearling Sale where she was knocked down for R450 000 to Bruce Le Roux.

Love Theme’s dam has the rare feat of producing two sprinting record setters – Humidor (by Miesque’s Approval) at Scottsville, and Scandal (by Muhtafal) at Fairview.

The mare is Lewinsky’s Lover by Jallad, hence the clever naming of her progeny! Again ridden to victory by Anton Marcus the day after Talk Of The Town, she has now won and placed from all three starts – unlucky last time out for second, after her jockey dropped his reins and saw her finish second gamely after recovery. Love Theme is trained by Duncan Howells and also looks to be a smart sort for the upcoming Champions Season next year.

Backworth, from small numbers have produced seven winners this month with nine places for the month of December.

Well done to all concerned!

Backworth Stud are having an incredible run with four winners in four days from four runners, from Greyville to Fairview and the Vaal.

A double at Scottsville on Wednesday set the ball rolling with Je Suis Silver, a daughter of Curved Ball capturing her second victory whilst Miesque’s Magic won her first race for trainer Des Egdes.

The beautifully-bred Varonella, a son of Var out of Devonella by Kahal (with the great Devon Air in his dam line) has won his last two starts on the trot for Alan Greef.

This afternoon the success continued with another blue-blooded filly, Trellis – a daughter of Fort Wood out of Blue Lace Agate by Rakeen capturing her first victory from four starts.

Trellis has placed in two races previously and left the field ‘in her dust’ by an incredible nine and a half lengths under the care of trainer Paul Peter, under Lyle Hewitson. She slipped through the net at the 2015 National Yearling Sale after being unsold and looks an exciting prospect indeed with plenty of stud value.

Backworth Stud, a boutique farm in the picturesque sugar cane town of Eston, has produced its fair share of Group winners including the famed globe-trotting Gr1 winner, Chocolicious.

Chocolicious in Australia with her then newborn Frankel filly, who is now in training with Mike De Kock. Image: Virginia Harvey

Backworth were thrown into the spotlight when news broke that the Kahal filly was to be covered by Frankel, and as luck would have it her outstanding yearling chestnut filly was the highest price in the Southern Hemisphere for a Frankel filly, at the time of her sale in Australia as a yearling – knocked down for $610 000.

She was sold to Shadwell Stud, and the filly has made her way to South African shores under the guidance of Mike De Kock. Named Mazahaar, she will be seen hitting the track this year.

Backworth also produced speedy course record setters Humidor and Scandal, both half-siblings out of Lewinsky’s Lover.

In 2012 Keith Russon and Ian Todd were awarded KZN Breeders Award for Outstanding Breeders Achievement, after accomplishing a 53% winners to runners percentage for the season of 2012.

The Fairview and South African 1000m record was broken for the second time this year when the Muhtafal filly Scandal bolted home to win the R100 000 Glendore Sprint on Friday.

The turf track record was shattered just ten months ago by Blizzard Belle, who set 54,55 secs.
The non black-type feature seven horse line-up included Cape Flying Championship hopeful Villa Del Largo and Gr1 winner Normanz.

The in-form Zackey, who has quickly entrenched himself in the SA top 4, appeared to get his crop momentarily entangled in the reins at about the 300m, but he recovered quickly as Scandal moved ahead and went on to hold Normanz by 1,75 lengths in a record breaking 54,38 secs. The Corne Spies-trained Scandal was the only filly in the race.

A R375 000 National Yearling Sale purchase, Scandal has won five races on both surfaces with six places from 19 starts for stakes of R327 325.

Bred by Backworth Stud, she is designed to be quick – being a daughter of Summerhill’s ill-fated ‘General’, Muhtafal out of the two-time winning Jallad mare, Lewinsky’s Lover.

Her son by Miesque’s Approval, Humidor smashed Kildonan’s record in a clocked time of 66,98 seconds over 1200m, thus beating the course record of 67 seconds flat set by the Mike de Kock-trained Kildonan when winning one of the strongest Gr1 Golden Horse Casino Sprints of all time, beating three other Gr1 winners in Mythical Flight, War Artist and Rebel King. International speedster JJ The Jetplane couldnt better the time in previous years.

There is more to come from Lewinsky’s Lover, including a smashing bay Oratorio filly named Love Theme. She sold for R450 000 at the 2016 KZN Yearling Sale to Bruce Le Roux and is owned in the partnership of Bruce and Tinus Gericke (who own and race Gr2 winner, A Woman’s Way) as a racing and future broodmare prospect for Spring Valley Stud.

Lewinsky’s Lover has a Byword colt yearling presently being aimed at the National Yearling Sale in April 2017.

Lewinsky’s Lover, a daughter of Jallad out of a Politican mare, has produced an outstanding and correct Irish Flame colt this year, which Keith Russon describes as “oozing quality, very much like his sire. A very exciting future prospect!”

Keith describes the mare as not particularly eye-catching if you had to pick her out in a paddock, and as not having the best front and back legs – therefore Keith has had to mate her carefully.

This attention to detail and selecting the right stallions has resulted in beautiful correct foals which have fetched good prices at sales.

Keith describes how, “we nearly sold the mare, and after she produced this magnificent flashy correct foal (Humidor – named after a cuban cigar), we decided to keep her and sent her to Muhtafal which produced Scandal. It is just incredible how this mare is producing so much speed!”

Lewinsky’s Lover’s sales prices have been as follows:

Caviar (by Var sold for R80 000 at NYS) – five wins, earned R398 450

Humidor (by Miesque’s Approval sold for R200 000 at NYS) – five wins, earned R340 000

Scandal (by Muhtafal sold for R375 000 at NYS) – three wins, earned R220 000 and Stakes Placed

Love Theme (by Oratorio sold for R450 000 at KZN Yearling Sale) – as yet unraced two year old.

A two-time winner herself, she has produced three winners including Var filly Caviar, a five-time winner who placed five times.

Lewinsky’s Lover’s second dam is Soho Secret, this is the top family of London News, Lady Brompton, King’s Gambit, Hack Green, Covenant and Promisefrommyheart to mention but a few.

Don’t miss the progeny of Lewinsky’s Lover at the sales.

Summerhill Stud and breeders around KZN are welcoming the first foal crop by triple Gr1 winner, Capetown Noir.

Summerhill Stud and breeders around KZN are welcoming the first foal crop by triple Gr1 winner, Capetown Noir.

The son of Western Winter out of Fort Wood mare Akinfeet, was hailed by jockey Anton Marcus as the best juvenile he had sat on that season, after winning his debut by two lengths.

A R1-million yearling with a career that spanned over three years, the big dark bay colt with the unusual white blaze down his face annhilated the likes of Run For It, Sanshaawes, Love Struck and King Of Pain, Yorker and Jackson. Capetown Noir won the Gr1 Cape Premier Guineas, the Gr1 Investec Derby, the Gr3 Byerley Turk, Gr3 Matchem Stakes and Gr1 LÓrmarins Queens Plate.

His dam, Akinfeet, won in South and Dubai and has produced 11-time (and Gr3) winner Across The Ice, a full-brother to Capetown Noir.
Mick Goss stated during his introduction of Capetown Noir at the 2015 Summerhill Stallion Day: “His arrival at Summerhill marks the best South African racehorse to set foot on the property since National Emblem two decades ago. We all know what he [National Emblem] did: two Juvenile sires’ premierships and a prolonged spell among the “Big Five” was an eloquent broadside for those critics who thought he lacked the substance to make a stallion! If Capetown Noir was part of the parade, no man felt safe.”

Backworth Stud have welcomed a beautiful Capetown Noir foal out of Labeeb mare, Angel Bells. The mare has produced previously a filly that placed three times from seven starts by Judpot. Angel Bells own dam is a half-sister to the dam of Gr1 winner by Kahal, Bold Ellinore. She in turn has produced three winners including Stakes Placed Ha Lucy. Angel Bells’ broodmare sire is National Assembly, in turn out of a Home Guard (USA) mare.

This lovely colt is out of Kingmambo mare Deceptive Charm (in turn out of a mare by Sadlers Wells/Mill Reef) at Summerhill Stud – and a half-brother to Gr3 Oaks winner Witchcraft. This is the damline of top South African raced fillies Autumn Lodge and Mosszao.

The last is a colt out of Dream Model by Pissaro (in turn out of a Dolpour/Peaceable Kingdom mare), bred by Summerhill Stud. The second dam Back In The Swing placed in the Gr1 SA Fillies Guineas, and a four-time winner up to 1600m. This is the damline of recent Gr3 winner O Tamara, as well as Love Is In The Air, Silver Flyer and Putney Flyer.

Capetown Noir stands his second season at Equus Champion Breeders’ Summerhill Stud for a fee of R20 000 (R5000 nomination and R15 000 live foal) this season.
