Blue Sky Thoroughbreds presented a draft that had something for everyone, and saw their outstanding Legislate colt sold as Lot 213 to Snaith Racing for R450 000.

A handsome and spirited bay colt, he is a half brother to 5-time winner Luna Wish, from the family of American Graffiti.

The top selling filly also came from Bruce Le Roux and Tinus Gericke’s Blue Sky Thoroughbreds, with Red Sparrow, an Act Of War half sister to Gr2 winner Gimme A Shot bred by the late Mr Kevin Seal, knocked down for R300 000 to Triple 8 Clothing. This is the family of Loofah, Light Of The Moon and Lucky Find.

Gary and Colleen De Klerk’s Summerview Stud sold a balanced and attractive filly Miss Munroe for R200 000 to Bobby Rajhununan. A daughter of Lancaster Bomber, the late son of War Front who enjoyed a double at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Sunday, this is the family of Hidden Beauty, Sunset Tripp, Victory Moon and Imperious Star.

In form sire Rabada sold one Lot, a daughter of Listed and 5-time winner Just Chaos, for R140 000.

Blue Sky sold all 14 of their Lots presented for sale for an aggregate of R2-million.

Winnie Fourie’s Grace Stables top price saw a Potala Palace filly sell for R90 000 from the family of Horse Chestnut, destined for Zimbabwe’s Debbie Swanson.

KZN’s Jane Thomas was active at the sale as a buyer, listed in the top 3 after purchasing 10 Lots for an average of R419 000 each.

Following the general trend of strong prices and a solid middle market which has been felt in South Africa this year, the August Two Year Old Sale showed marked increases in both aggregate and average, while just 12 horses failed to find new homes at the sale.

The aggregate rose from R48 975 000 in 2023 to R59 690 000 this year, with the average increasing from R220 608 to R244 631, and the median rose accordingly from R140 000 to R160 000.

While small in numbers, Piemonte Stud will be represented by high-quality individuals at the 2023 August Two Year Old Sale.

The Piemonte Stud will be offering two well related fillies at the August Sale in the form of daughters of Global View and What A Winter respectively. Galileo horse Global View, whose progeny include G1 Daily News 2000 runner up Dave The King and East Cape champion Global Drummer among others, is represented here by a filly (Lot 94) whose four time winning dam is a Var half-sister to millionaire Storm Warning, and this filly’s fourth dam is none other than multiple champion Olympic Duel.

What A Winter, whose progeny include recent G1 Jonsson Workwear Computaform Sprint winner Isivunguvungu, is the sire of Buttafuori (Lot 73), a filly out of a four time winning daughter of outstanding broodmare sire Horse Chestnut who hails from the same female line as such international standouts as Colonial Affair, Declaration Of War and Union Rags among others.

Piemonte’s two fillies can be found in Block E at the TBA Complex in Germiston.

Warwick and Karin Render brought a quality draft of well bred and prepared two year olds, and were rewarded when filly Lot 278 The Blackbird, was knocked down to Hollywood Syndicate for R450 000.

The filly by William Longsword is out of Cassie O’Malley by Jet Master; the latter bred by the Late Greg Royden Turner of Roski Stud. This is the family of Successful Bidder and Gold Flier.

The top priced colt from KZN came from the Scribantes Piemonte Stud – and Lee’s plan of purchasing well-bred fillies off yearling sales came full circle as the smart mare Beataboutthebush (Gimmethegreenlight), whom Lee raced with great success with eight wins and three Listed wins under her belt, produced a smashing first foal by Rafeef named Non Giocare.

The impressive colt was knocked down to KZN Pretrainer and BSA Inspector and a leading judge of Thoroughbred horses, Jane Thomas for R375 000.

Beataboutthebush is a half-sister to True Master, and this is the family of Do It Again and Dancewiththedevil.

Blue Sky Thoroughbreds averaged R153 000 for their three lots sold.

The average for the sale was R141 750 per horse and considered one of the most successful two year old sales of recent times.

With record numbers the order of the two days, Bloodstock South Africa and a host of happy vendors closed off the 2021 renewal of the BSA August Sale at the TBA Sales Complex in Johannesburg on Saturday afternoon in a positive spirit.

The all-time high aggregate achieved in 2020 was within touching distance, with 25% less 2yo’s catalogued in the 2021 renewal and the 275 youngsters selling for a gross of R39 640 000.

The average of R141 750 was up 15,3% year-on-year, with the median soaring 28,5% to a new record high of R90 000 at the close on Saturday.

“The two days of the 2021 BSA National August 2yo Sale will go down as a vote of confidence in the future of SA racing by a broad spectrum of buyers. For many, the bidding proved more competitive than may have been anticipated, with a diverse range of quality 2yo’s from a wide range of stallions in great demand. The proof of the pudding is in the numbers, and we are appreciative of a great team effort that incorporated the vendors, buyers, underbidders and all the support teams. The mood augurs well for the BSA November 2yo Sale whose entries close on the 10^th September 2021” said BSA CEO Michael Holmes.

The August 2YO Sale takes place on 20 & 21 August at the TBA Complex, with 73 Thoroughbreds on offer from KZN’s farms from a variety of stallions. Gr1 producing Act Of War is represented with three horses on sale, and the deceased Crusade has his last crop on offer which includes Lot 23 – a half to Just As I Said consigned by Spring Valley Stud.
