The recent sale of Avalon Stud has seen the Klawervlei-owned son of Western Winter, Lion Tamer, being relocated to Koos and Lorraine De Klerk’s Yellow Star Stud in Mooi River.

Standing at 16hh, Lion Tamer is a good-looking, young and very athletic stallion – and the first to be represented in KZN by Western Winter.

Lion Tamer has already had three winners from a handful of horses to race including Lady De Winter, who went onto compete in a Grade 1 race on Vodacom Durban July Day. His other winners include Tappin’ The Stars and Lion’s Print – who has also placed twice.

Lady de Winter has won once and placed twice from four starts – a horse that was passed through the 2011 KZN Yearling Sales ring as unsold. Horses that have placed to date include Mighty Lion, Olivealice and Smitten.

Lion Tamer, out of Blushing Dove by Comic Blush, is a six-time winner and ran second in the Gr 2 Greyville 1900, Gr 1 J&B Met, Gr 1 Summer Cup and Gr 2 Emerald Cup – showing what a versatile sort he is – from ages 3 – 5. He earned R1,1 million at the track in stakes.

His dam-line includes the likes of Black Rod, an 8-time winner including two Gr 3 races, and Gr 3 Lonsdale Stirrup Cup winner The Badger – as well as Le Deportista, Gr 2 JB McIntosh Classic winner.

Lion Tamer stood for a fee of R5 000 live foal last season.

Yellow Star Stud also stand stallions such as Kildonan, broodmare sire extraordinaire Spectrum, Tropical Empire and Damage Is Done.
