Good Start For The Apache In The Cape

Good Start For The Apache In The Cape

Rosedene Stud’s well performed young stallion The Apache has made a pleasing start to his fledgling stud career. The Mogok son covered around about 40 mares in his first season at stud, with pleasing fertility.

The Apache, bred by the Scott Bros, was a top class racehorse who competed at the top level all over the world. Raced by Winston Chow in partnership with Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, The Apache earned in excess of R17 million in a career which saw him race competitively from three to five. He proved a wonderful advertisement for the quality of the South African thoroughbred, racing successfully against some of the world’s very best gallopers.

South Africa’s Equus Champion 3YO Colt of 2011, The Apache won or placed in ten Group/Graded races in four different countries. His top wins in South Africa included G1 scores in the Champions Cup and Daily News 2000, with The Apache also won the G2 Dingaans during that season.

Exported overseas at the end of his sophomore season, The Apache proved a formidable opponent. His Dubai victories included a score in the G2 Al Rashidiya over a field which included French Group 1 winner Aesop’s Fables, and he also finished second in the G1 Dubai Duty Free to the Godolphin trainer Sajjhaa.

The Apache also finished first past the post in the 2013 G1 Arlington Million, one of North America’s top turf races, but was disqualified and demoted to second behind Real Solution.

Among the top horses beaten by The Apache during his racing days were the international Group/Grade 1 winners Aesop’s Fables (Prix Jean Prat), Giofra (Falmouth Stakes), Hunter’s Light (Jebel Hatta), Little Mike (Breeders Cup Turf), Ocean Park (Cox Plate), Side Glance (VRC Mackinnon Stakes), Trade Storm (Woodbine Mile) and Wigmore Hall (Northern Dancer Turf S-twice).

Local stars downed by The Apache included the G1 winners Big City Life, Bravura, Buy And Sell, Dancewiththedevil, Emerald Cove, English Garden, Flirtation, Gold Onyx, Happy Landing, Igugu, Link Man, Regal Ransom, Seal and Solo Traveller.

A grandson of the immortal Storm Cat, The Apache is out of a four time winning full-sister to feature race winner Sugar Magnolia and his second dam is former top sprinter and Gr1 Gilbeys (now Golden Horse Casino Sprint) winner Bold West (by multiple SA champion sire Jungle Cove).

This is the same family as Gr1 Cape Fillies Guineas winner Leta [pictured right at Scott Bros], and The Apache traces back in female line to the important mare Flying Duchess. The latter’s offspring included the Epsom Derby winner and hugely successful champion British sire Galopin (sire of amongst others the legendary racehorse and sire St Simon).
