Lion Tamer, standing at Avalon Stud in the KZN Midlands, had his first winner in the second race for Maiden two year-old fillies at Scottsville over 1200 metres with Lady De Winter, trained by Wayne Badenhorst and ridden to victory by half a length by Karis Teetan. The filly is owned by Mr and Mrs Doig.

Lady De Winter is also bred by Avalon Stud and she is out of the mare Savvy Lady by Harry Hotspur. This is Lady De Winter’s second start, and she placed on debut.

Lion Tamer has had just five runners to date, with a win and 2 places.

Lion Tamer is by Western Winter out of Blushing Dove by Comic Blush, and had six wins over 1400-2000 metres from age 2 to 4, for earnings of R1.1 million. He achieved a Merit Rating of 109. He placed second in the following races, the Gr2 Greyville 1900 (1900m), the Gr1 J&B Met (2000m), the Gr1 Summer Cup (2000m) as well as the Gr2 Emerald Cup (1400m) which is Africa’s richest race on sand. He stood his first season at stud in 2008.

The dam Savvy Lady, a winnner herself and placing 8 times, has produced two winners to date from three runners. This is a strong dam-line with the likes of ARCSA Champion 3YO Miler in 1982, Rain Forest being seen under the third dam. Fourth dam is Cornbelle – and this goes on to show the likes of Festive Season, Festive Forever, Fearless, Marathon Man, Hot Corn, Shah’s Star, Lion’s Blood and sire Chief Warden.

It is interesting to note that Lady De Winter passed through the 2011 KZN Yearling Sale unsold after failing to reach a reserve of R30 000. She has earned almost R50 000 in her first two starts.

Well done to Avalon Stud and the connections of this filly, we are sure to see much more from her in the future.
