The Suncoast KZN Yearling Sale once again ended on a high, a sale that continues to grow and gains strength each year – especially with the number of Group Winning Graduates it yields each year – KZN-breds include the likes of Midlands Thoroughbreds’ Gr2 winner Virgo’s Babe who set a record on the Polytrack on Vodacom Durban July day and Backworth’s Gr2 Umkhomazi winner Colour Of Courage.
Another recent Graduate who is knocking the door for a big win is Clifton Stud’s Beckedorf – a magnificent son of young sire A.P. Answer who has now placed closely in a Gr1 and Gr2, and placed second to Jurisdiction in the KZN Yearling Sale Million on Vodacom Durban July day, a race exclusively for the graduates of the previous years sale.
Bruce and Delia Le Roux from Spring Valley Stud who sold the top-priced KZN-bred colt – a full-brother by Kahal to Gr2 Drill Hall Stakes winner Tales Of Bravery. Lot 149 named Secret Warning sold to Mr RR Naidoo for R260 000. The colt descends from the damline of American and South African Gr1 winning Gypsy’s Warning, the latter bred by Rathmor Stud.
Congratulations must go to Keith Russon and Ian Todd’s Backworth Stud – who sold the top-selling KZN-bred filly as well as the top-priced progeny for Miesque’s Approval and King’s Chapel. The first is a daughter of Horse Chestnut out of Exclusive Honour – therefore a half-sister to Gr2 winner Colour Of Courage. The filly named Aesculus is a fourth produce and sold as Lot 154 for R160 000 to R&T Tyres.
Backworth also sold the top-priced progeny of Miesque’s Approval and first season sire King’s Chapel of the sale – the Miesque’s Approval being a lovely colt named Positivo out of Rise Again by Tamburlaine. He sold as Lot 9 for R160 000 to Tony Rivalland. Positivo is the first foal for the dam, who is a two-time winning half-sister to Royal Champ.
The King’s Chapel – beautifully named Benedictine [pictured above right] – is out of a grey Salaadim mare named Absolut Star. Sold as Lot 77 for R120 000 to Sea Cottage Trading, Benedictine was a big, handsome individual very typical of his Gr1 winning sire who has produced Group winning progeny in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Hong Kong. This is the damline of Hill Fifty Four, Alpha Centauri and Successful Bidder.
Rathmor Stud had one of the bigger drafts of the sale with 20 horses catalogued, selling the top-priced Mogok of the sale [pictured left]. An eye-catching colt, Lot 191 named Sunglasses, sold for R200 000 to Howell’s Racing. Out of phenomenal Group-winning damline – the mare Jumeirah Beach (by Jallad) is a full-sister to Gr1 J&B Met winner Zebra Crossing, and a half-sister to African Lion and Circle Of Life. Jumeirah Beach has produced four winners to date, including the recent two time winner Acapulco.
The first season sires to have progeny sell included the late Bankable. Hadlow Stud sold a magnificent well-grown colt (Lot 108) aptly named Bank The Cash for R140 000 to Equine Administration. Out of mare Cash Card by National Emblem, this is the immediate dam-line of Fire Water and Sunny Secret.
Roski’s Just As Well, the beautifully-bred Gr1 winning son of A.P Indy standing at Spring Valley Stud, had his first crop sell consistently with three of his Lots selling for R80 000 each – two fillies (both bred and consigned by Roski Stud) and a colt. The first is Lot 63 named Just Jawja, out of Tynette by Tamburlaine from the immediate family of Enchanted Kingdom. The filly sold to Mr SJD Mynhardt.
The second has a dam-line filled with Bold Black Type, a first produce for mare A Thousand Jets (by Jet Master). The filly named Just A Jet sold to Misty Meadows – this is a dam-line that includes the likes of Chestnut Rocket, In Camera, Yataghan, Destroyer and Gallantry.
The third yearling colt was Lot 184 named Just As I Said, who is out of mare I Said Hey, bred and consigned by Spring Valley Stud. He is a second produce whose half-brother is Lock Him Up – a Fort Beluga who has won from just two starts.
The top-priced Muhtafal of the sale was consigned by Bush Hill Stud [pictured below right] – an impressive colt out of Done Roamin’ by Rambo Dancer. Bred by Gary and Collen De Klerk, Lot 140 Copper’s Pride sold for R160 000 to Howell’s Racing. This is the damline of Naan Khataay, Gun Drift and Blue Voyager.
There were increases in both the average and median prices at the 2014 Suncoast KZN Yearling Sale, which concluded early Friday evening. Remarkably the sale which had 30 horses fewer than last year managed to all but equal the gross turnover from 2013. The final statistics saw the aggregate slip (but by less than 1%) from R20 690 000 to R20 555 000.
The average for the 2014 KZN Sale rose to R100 268 from R88 798 (an increase of 13%), while the median price rose a stunning 40% from R50 000 to R70 000. Just 14 lots failed to reach their reserve, while 33 yearlings were bought back by their respective vendors.
TBA CEO Jan Naude was pleased with the outcome of the 2014 KZN Yearling Sale, and commented post sale, “Even with fewer horses than last year, we still managed to equal last year’s turnover, and one can only be pleased with the increase in average and median. We are also grateful to the support from both buyers and vendors which made the 2014 Suncoast KZN Yearling Sale such a success.”
