Somerset Stud At The Suncoast KZN Yearling Sales
Somerset Stud At The Suncoast KZN Yearling Sales |
Alan and Vera Sutherland have an outstanding draft of yearlings at this years’ Suncoast KZN Yearling Sale, all five by King Of Kings, all five chestnut – including an athletic looking full-sister, Lot 46 named Girl From Somewhere, to 6-time winner King’s Entourage.
King Of Kings stood at Somerset Stud prior to moving to Clifton Stud, and at the beginning of this year was Leading Sire of Two Year Olds by Stakes Earned. His outstanding progeny this year has been another chestnut, Reign As Kings and the talented King’s Temptress.
Somerset Stud have a strong history in KZN Breeding, having produced three equine millionaires in Taban, the diminutive Durban July winner Teal with the heart of a giant, and Miss Averof. In 1995, Somerset Stud were voted Outstanding Breeders for the year, and they have stood stallions in the past such as Our Casey’s Boy and Gallic League – the latter produced exceptional racing fillies and he has gone onto be a decent Broodmare Sire – producing the likes of Hear The Drums, South Africa’s all-time biggest winner with 35 wins under his belt.
Lot 46 Girl From Somewhere is out of Lite Spark by Sportsworld, in turn out of an Elliodor mare Little Arc. Lite Spark was a 3-time winner herself of R162,050 from age 2 to 4 over distances of 1200 – 1600m and she placed 4 times including a second in the Odessa Stud Fillies Championship Gr.2, third in the Cape Fillies Guineas Gr 1, and Garden Province Stakes Gr 1. She is a half- sister to Anniversary Knight and Complete Journey (the dam of GEEPEE S). She has produced two winners to date in King’s Entourage and Spring Lite. This is a very good looking filly, beautifully put together with a good length of rein.
Lot 28, Tuitira, has very strong Somerset roots, being out of a Personal Hope mare Khorkina, out of one of Somerset Studs best mares Melting who in turn was by Our Casey’s Boy. Khorkina is an own-sister to Lady Faye, the dam of Pisces Star. Melting produced an incredible 9 winners from 10 runners. This family includes Bold Black Types, Gluwein, Alpine Club and Ice Diamond.
Lot 55, Tribaut, is the first produce from the mare Margaux (by Malhub out of Graded Placed Gallic Ring by Gallic League). The dam Margaux is a half-sister to Men Of Rheims, a six-time winner in South Africa and Mauritius. This family includes Secret Ring, Much Pleasure, Villamoura and Brazilian 11-time winner Neyfields.
Lot 63 is Kings Journey, out of My Lady Purple by Elliodor. This mare has produced 5 winners to date including Boobalina and Potchefstroom. Under the second dam we find Bold Black Types Take Silk, Purple Lake and Flower Angel.
Finally, Kings Rose is out of a Silvano mare named Roxy Hart, who in turn is out of the Gr 3 winning mare (who also placed second in the Gr 1 SA Fillies Guineas) Rattlebag by Jallad. Roxy Hart is a half-sister to Chastity, a TBA of SA Champion Juvenile Stakes Gr 3 placed filly.
