Badger’s Drift (born 1997, by Badger Land (USA) out of On The Roof (SNL)) pictured on the left – Multiple Gr.1 Winner and Champion Freshman Sire of 2007. Stakes earned as 3yro in 2001: R1,870,313.00
Background:-
As at the end of the 2012 racing season, namely 31 July 2012, Badger’s Drift topped the Stallions list for 3 year olds in South Africa with an impressive strike rate of 73% for Runners to Winners. Badger’s Drift was Champion Freshman sire in 2007, and his progeny continue to be successful on the tracks.
During the past 2012 season, his foals Just Bluffing (Champion Three Old Colt – Kenya) won the Gr.1 Derby and placed second in the Gr.1 St Ledger.
Act of Supremacy and Lord Badger (EC Horse Of The Year) have both placed third and fourth in the Grade 3 Champion Juvenile Cup over 1400m on 15 July 2011. Lord Badger then went on to win the E Cape Guineas over 1600m.
Grade 2 winner, Hospitality, won another feature by 3.25 lengths Kenilworth 09 July.
Badger Lake sold for over a Million Rand, after his hat-trick of wins, won the Listed Durbanville Cup over 3200m on 24 November 2012.
From My Heart has been placed 2nd & 3rd in Grade 1 / Group 1 company over 1500m in Mauritius during 2012.
His other notable progeny include Ivory Trail (MR112), winner of the Grade 1 Champions Cup over 1800m, the Gr2 Peninsula Handicap over 1800m, the Grade 3 Langerman Handicap over 1500m and the Listed Memorial Mile over 1600m.
He has also produced three fillies with merit ratings of over 90, including Imperialist, Peonie Paradise and Golden Bow, the winner of the Listed Eastern Cape Fillies Nursery over 1200m.
Badger’s Drift himself was the second highest priced yearling at the National Yearling Sales in 1999, purchased for R500, 000. He went on to be a very successful racehorse, winning seven races including three Grade 1 races, and two legs of the SA Triple Crown and placed second in the other. He proved himself to be a versatile racehorse, winning over distances from 1300 – 2450m and earning himself R1.8 million in stakes in the process. He set a new course record in the SA Classic Grade 1 over 1800m (which remains in tact), and he went on to win races such as the SA Derby Grade 1 over 2450m, and the Daily News 2000 Grade 1 over 2000m.
He did not race as a four year old as he was injured in a freak accident when on an early morning gallop – he stood in a hole on the sand training track & shattered his near-fore knee. With surgery and rest he returned to racing as a five year old and raced twice – third Gr2 Elevation Stakes.
He was then retired to stud.
His dam, On The Roof by Thatching, who’s progeny were all Listed Stakes winners. She produced two 10 time winner s including Secret Hoard and Dancin’ In The Rain, and two 8 time winners with On The Tiles and Olympic Bid, as well as Arcade, a 5 time winner. She deservedly went onto win Equus Champion Broodmare Of The Year in 2000 as a result. She is a close relative to Blushing Groom being out of a 3 parts-sister to him.
His sire Badger Land, was the winner of 5 races in USA, from 1600-1800m. He made his mark on South African racetracks, Siring the likes of All Will Be Well, Blossoming Fields, Wolf Whistle, Badger’s Coast, Gleaming Sky, Highland Night, Hinterland, Red Badge, American Badger and Badge of Honour, to name but a few!
Badger Land was crowned Champion Equus Sire in 2001 & 2004.
Sadly he died prematurely, but produced a mass of Grade 1 winners in just six crops that raced in South Africa.
Badger’s Drift is free of Northern Dancer blood.
