Lee and Dino Scribante’s young Piemonte Stud have had their first Award success from their first crop of yearlings to be sold in Piemonte’s name, with Kalamain collecting the East Cape Racing Award for Champion Three Year Old.

The Racing Association Eastern Cape Chapter, in conjunction with Phumelela, hosted the Eastern Cape Racing Awards for the 2014/15 season at a gala dinner in the HB Christian Room at Fairview Racecourse on Saturday evening.

Piemonte Stud presented their first draft for sale at the 2013 Suncoast KZN Yearling Sale, which Kalamain was entered for but unfortunately had to be withdrawn after he injured himself.

Lee is emphatic that he sells every horse he breeds at sales, however being injured meant that it forced Lee Scribante to keep the colt and race the horse himself, as by the time the horse had recovered there were no more sales opportunities to send the horse to that year.

Kalamain repaid Lee by going out to place and win in his first four starts. To date the chestnut gelding by Admire Main has won five times for Alan Greef and the partnership of Lee and his brother, and placed four times from 12 starts – three of them in fifth position. A winner of the Guineas Plate, his last start saw him place second in the Non-Black Type Friendly City Stakes over 1900m.

His dam Kalajana by Silvino is a 2-time winner. The second dam is Kamala, a grand-daughter of Camp Lover.

Other success stories to come from this particular draft are Cherish The Charm, who won in Mauritius once again over the weekend, Mogokity and The Tripster.

Piemonte Stud’s top seller to date has been Louella off the 2015 National Yearling Sale, the Fort Wood filly out of Raw Deal sold for R525 000.

Well done to all at Piemonte Stud.
