Coolmore Stud today confirmed the highest-rated racehorse ever by the great Sadler’s Wells, Montjeu, has died.

In 2011, Montjeu sired 15 individual Group/Graded winners, equalling Galileo. The 16.1hh son of Sadler’s Wells out of Floripedes by Top Ville is described by Coolmore as “an exceptional young sire, having already been a fantastic 6 time Grade 1 winning racehorse.

He is already the sire of Gr.1 winners such as Pour Moi – Epsom Derby, Hurricane Run – World Champion of 2005, St Nicholas Abbey – Breeders’ Cup Turf, Coronation Cup, Racing Post Trophy, Jan Vermeer – Criterium International, Motivator – Epsom Derby, Racing Post, Montmartre – Grand Prix de Paris, Scorpion – St Leger Stakes, Grand Prix de Paris, Coronation Cup, Fame And Glory – Criterium de Saint Cloud, Irish Derby, Gold Cup, Authorized – Epsom Derby, Racing Post Trophy, Corre Caminos – Prix Ganay, Frozen Fire – Irish Derby, Montare – Prix Royal Oak.”

As a racehorse, Montjeu will be most fondly remembered for winning the French and Irish Derbies, Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes.

Montjeu died at Coolmore Stud in Tipperary, Ireland, after a short illness which allegedly was due to complications from septicaemia.
