Meteor Mike Coming Home After Sixth Singapore Win

Scott Bros-bred son of Mogok, Meteor Mike (centre) wins his last race at Kranji.

Meteor Mike, a nine year old son of Mogok bred by Scott Bros has his last race in Singapore for trainer David Hill and Singapore 2012 Champion owners Dennis and Gael Evans of Newbury Racing Stable.

Meteor Mike got up to win by a head in his last start over 1400m at Kranji, and will be exported back to South Africa for his retirement. A National 2YO Sales graduate who sold for R210 000, Meteor Mike has raced 48 times and had five wins and 17 places, earning in excess of R5,5million.

“He wasn’t supposed to retire tonight, but after that win, I’ve decided: That was his last race,” said Hill.

“He’s all heart, and he showed it again tonight. He’s never run a bad race, especially lately, and I wasn’t all that surprised he won tonight.

“His work as usual has been good leading to tonight’s race. He’s an old marvel and Dennis and I had already agreed we would retire him after one last win. He will head back to South Africa at the end of the year.”

Bowing out on a winning note, Meteor Mike began his career in South Africa under the care of Basil Marcus.

He is out of Moondust by Spaceship, in turn out of Scott Bros’ racemare Pure Sands. A full brother to Meteor Mike, named Armstrong’s Boy [pictured left], sold for R250 000 earlier this year at the National Yearling Sale.

His full-sister, Armstrong’s Girl, is a 7-time winner in Kenya and highly thought of. The dam Moondust has achieved multiple winners in two countries.

Pure Sands is a half-sister to Gr2 winners’ King Shore and Jungle Sands.

Mogok has produced four Gr1 winners to date, more recently the deceased Wild One who took home the Gr1 eLan Gold Cup on 1 August.
