KZN Breeders Awards A Great Success

KZN Breeders Awards A Great Success

Horse Of The Year - Dancewiththedevil - Graystone Stud The KZN Breeders Association hosted their annual Awards evening at Bellwood Cottages on 25 November. Recently-elected Chairman Koos de Klerk addressed the visitors at the well attended and very successful event saying, “This is a hard act to follow after the work by Warwick Render. I’d like to wish him every success and we’re sad he’s no longer on the board. I’m proud to be here, proud to be associated with this calibre of breeder here at the awards.

“So much work has gone into putting this event together so well done to the ladies involved, Ashley de Klerk and Linda Norval, for their outstanding work and the organisation that it took to put this event together.

“Welcome to the Directors of Gold Circle and thank you for your support of the KZN Breeders and welcome to my fellow breeders. We are here to honour the achievements of the breeders of thoroughbreds in KZN. How well did we do? If you look at the National Awards, we claimed seven of the 15 Breeder Awards.

“To those who don’t believe KZN breeds quality horses that can’t compete, don’t forget about the likes of National Chmpion Breeders Summerhill Stud, Equus Breeder of the Year St John Gray, champion Dancewiththedevil and Champion Stallion, the KZN Bred Jet Master, and International achiever Gypsy’s Warning. I think we can slap ourselves on the back. Quite firmly!

“There are many initiatives currently taking place to try and get our export market going. There are export opportunities – South Africa’s market share is less than a quarter of a per cent of the international sales of horses and we’re looking to up this by more than 400%. If these initiatives are fruitful, we will be looking forward to a very bright future.

“We would like to make the KZN province the breeders’ centre of choice.”

Dancewiththedevil won the award for Horse Of The Year. Cathy Martin, acting on behalf of St John Gray, informed us that her dam Emperor’s Dance, foaled a Jam Alley(AUS) colt at Graystone Stud half an hour before Dancewiththedevil won this prestigious award. St John Gray has achieved an incredible feat of being the breeder, owner and trainer of this talented mare which resulted in him taking home honours for Breeding Achievement.

Mogok won Stallion Of The Year, with his son The Apache taking home the Awards for Outstanding Middle Distance Male, Outstanding Stayer Male and Outstanding Three Year Old Colt – as well as his daughter Gypsy’s Warning taking home the International Achievement Award on behalf of Rathmor Stud, for her Grade 1 performances in the USA over the last season.

Gypsy Queen, the dam of Gypsy’s Warning, took home Broodmare Of The Year honours while Miesque’s Approval took home the Stallion Prospect Award – with the Scott Brothers of Highdown Stud having a successful evening with both stallions and The Apache.

Summerhill Stud walked away with Leading Breeder Of The Year after five of their horses won Awards last night, including Pierre Jourdan, Extra Zero, Onehundredacrewood, Arabian Mist and Fisani.
