The upcoming Keeneland Yearling Sale will take place from 10 to 21 September, which will see 11 separate sessions going under the hammer and an incredible figure of 3604 yearlings being presented for sale.

It is quite heartening to see a number of South African broodmares in the mix – the likes of Ipi Tombe(ZIM) (colt by Medaglia d’Oro), Irridescence (colt by Dynaformer) and Sally Bowles (colt by Curlin) with progeny on the September Yearling Sale.

What grabs our attention however, is a colt and filly being made available on the sale, half-siblings to young sires in KZN.

The first is Lot 280 by Henrythenavigator (himself by Kingmambo out of Sequoyah by Sadler’s Wells) out of Sea Of Showers by Seattle Slew.

The bay colt is a half-brother to Scott Bros’ young sire, Atso(USA), (by Kingmambo). The colt is being consigned by Lane’s End Farm on behalf of breeder Flaxman Holdings, who also own Rathmor-bred Gypsy’s Warning.

A dam-line that boasts 10 champions in 8 countries, it includes Gr 1 performers Spinning World, Chimes Of Freedom, Aldebaran, Good Journey, Denon and Saddex.

Atso has already produced his first winner this season in Thatsoatso, with three others placing four times from his first few runners to hit the racetracks.

This year at the Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale, his top-priced colt to date, bred and consigned by Scott Bros sold for R280 000, out of the Argentine mare Toyshop by Roy.

Atso is an eye-opening individual, a chestnut stallion that needs to be seen. He has let down beautifully, a very good-looking individual with a significantly strong top-line and powerful hindquarters with a superb temperament to match. He stands for a fee of R6 000 live foal at Scott Bros.

The next is Lot 320 by Tale Of The Cat (by Storm Cat – Yarn by Mr Prospector), a filly out of champion racemare Sleepytime(IRE). She is a half-sister to another young sire in our province, Spanish Harlem(IRE). The filly is being consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency for Tenth Street Stables.

Spanish Harlem, a big handsome bay son of Danehill standing at 16.3h is an imposing individual who stands over ground. Rob Pickering of Middlefield Stud says he throws his big size and good-looks onto his babies.

His dam Sleepytime (by another top sire and broodmare sire Royal Academy) won the UK Gr 1 1000 Guineas and placed in a Gr 1. She earned a Timeform Rating of 121.

Spanish Harlem is a full-brother to sire Gentleman’s Deal, a nine-time winner including a Gr 3. He is also a sibling to four other black type horses.

Other sires appearing down this affluent dam-line include Ali-Royal, Curtain Time, Great Dane and Croco Rouge, amongst the many Bold Black Types is a filly who set South African tracks alight, Overarching.

Spanish Harlem’s first crop of yearlings sold this year the Emperor’s Palace National Yearling Sales. He stands this season for a fee of R7 000 live foal at Middlefield Stud.
