Is Igugu In The Next Ready-To-Run Draft?
Is Igugu In The Next Ready-To-Run Draft? |
We’ve had a couple of queries about whether the next Igugu is in this draft. Here is our response to that question:
“I guess the answer is “you never know”, because they often come from “left field.” What I can tell you is that this is probably the deepest catalogue we have known, and there are some terrific types among them. Igugu herself was not the obvious one, though it will be part of his epitaph that Joey Ramsden picked her in preference to the other Galileo filly in the catalogue that year. Most judges went for the other one (including Andre MacDonald, who was the under-bidder) at R2.2 million, while Mac ended up buying Igugu for a R1 million only after I told him she was the better of the two, in our opinion. Then he cut me back on the 50% I thought we’d agreed we’d keep, to just 25%, because he thought he’d bought her at half price. Truth is, he bought her for about 5% of her current value!
That said, the sale has produced the country’s two top-earners in 2010 and 2011 (Pierre Jourdan and Igugu), first and second in the Vodacom Durban July in 2011, the J&B Met winner in 2012, and the short-head second in this year’s Vodacom Durban July (Smanjemanje).”
