Bush Hill’s resident stallions King’s Chapel, Toreador and former resident sire Kahal made news over the weekend, both locally and internationally.

King’s Chapel had his first winner City Express and a Gr3 place in New Zealand last week, his luck continuing when his granddaughter by Sebring, Thurlow pictured above, fought courageously to nab the Gr3 Chairman’s Stakes over 1000m at Sandown in Australia. Thurlow is out of one of King’s Chapel’s top performing daughters, Princess Emmy.

Winning by half a length over fellow two year old filly Haybah and gelding Brooklyn, the Qatar Bloodstock-owned Thurlow took her record to two wins (including the Listed Santa’s Magical Kingdom Stakes) and one placing (the Gr3 VRC Emirates Airline Plate) from three starts for $190,250 earnings. Thurlow was purchased for $150,000 by David Redvers at the 2014 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale from the draft of Widden Stud.

Thurlow’s win in the Gr3 Chairman’s Stakes at Sandown on Saturday catapulted the two year-old to the top of the list in updated Slipper qualifying figures after the weekend’s racing.

Aimed at the Golden Slipper – seven of the top 10 prize money earners in the latest $3.5 million Golden Slipper order of entries are fillies, headed by the Robert Smerdon-trained Thurlow.

Qatar Bloodstock, owned by Sheikh Fahad Al Thani, has emerged as a major force in world racing. Sheikh Fahad is best known in Australia as the owner of Dunaden, the 2011 Melbourne Cup winner which also claimed the 2012 Caulfield Cup.

The Golden Slipper will be run at Rosehill on March 21.

Former resident sire Kahal had a winner and a place in both Hong Kong and Singapore respectively. Lovely Naughty [pictured right], out of National Emblem mare Shoreline Symphony, won the Changi Handicap over 1200m. Lovely Naughty previously won a barrier trial over 1200m, and has placed three times.

Coronet Peak, bred by Somerset Stud, placed second in Singapore in a Class 3 Handicap, ridden by Barend Vorster. To date the gelding has had five wins and 13 places.

Toreador’s brilliant daughter Lazer Star, carrying almost 8kgs more than the winner in the Gr3 Three Troika’s Stakes, finished second by a head to Sensible Lover(AUS). The filly was going for her fifth straight win with trainer Ormond Ferraris at Turffontein over 1450m, ridden by Weichong Marwing.

Lazer Star has previously taken home the Gr3 Magnolia Stakes as well as the Swallow Stakes Listed.
