First season sires A.P. Answer, Brave Tin Soldier and Fort Beluga are having their first progeny going to the Emperors Palace National Yearling Sales – where they will fall under the hammer next weekend in Johannesburg.
We have a look at a few of the ‘Class of 2011’ going to the National Sales from foals until now – and we look forward to reporting their success on the racetracks across South Africa from next year!
Lot 74 Gran Blanco
Kahal – Perakeen by Rakeen
The first colt we look at it is Rathmor’s ‘surprise’, Gran Blanco – the rare white colt by Kahal out of Gr 3 placed Perakeen.
Our website has kept track of this rare medicine hat Thoroughbred since birth (pictured left) – and he has grown into a big, beautiful specimen – very much like his Champion sire.
A correct horse that scored 8.5 for his yearling inspection, his dam is a 5-time winner and she placed twice in the Gr 3 Yellowwood Handicap Stakes, as well as two Listed races of distances between 1300 – 1600m.
The first four dams in this pedigree are all Group placed mares in South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. This is also the family of Vodacom Durban July winner and sire, Grey’s Inn(USA).

Brave Tin Soldier – Personify by Personal Hope
The first of Brave Tin Soldier’s progeny to go on sale, this lovely filly bred and consigned by Summerhill Stud is the second produce out of Personify by Personal Hope. Personify is a 3-time winner at aged four over a distance of 1400 – 1600m, she placed four times and is the dam of two previous foals.
This is the family of Clifton Queen, First Arrival and Let’s Rock ‘n Roll. Fourth dam is none other then Party Time – also the immediate family of Durban July winner Trademark, Morisco and Jackson Square, to name but a few!

Brave Tin Soldier – Celtic Bunny by Centenary
Another Brave Tin Soldier, this Hadlow Stud-bred filly is a half-sister to 14-time winner (including Listed) Celtic Fire.
The dam has produced four winners, including four-time winner Bunny-Bell. Celtic Fire was also named the East Cape Racing Horse-Of-The-Year for 2011.
This mare reigns from the family of Eliza, the dam of 11-time multiple Graded Stakes winner Eldoriza and Belle Of Athens, and includes Happy Landing and Sunsational.

Kahal – Splitsville by Badger Land
A good-looking son of Kahal bred and consigned by Bush Hill Stud, this foal’s photo graced our KZN Breeders website banner for many months in 2011.
His dam Splitsville by Badger Land, has five wins under her belt and placed 17 times including three Listed races.
Her dam Four Weddings has produced three runners and three winners, with her third dam by Sir Gaylord(USA) producing Grade 2 winner and sire Romantic Lead, and multiple Grade 1 winner and sire (including the Woodward Stakes) Track Barron.
Lot 486 Shivia’s Answer
A.P. Answer – Kali Mist by Rakeen
Pictured here at just two days old at breeders’ Clifton Stud, Shivia’s Answer is one of the first of A.P. Answer’s impressive yearlings to Nationals.
This outstanding bay filly is out of Kali Mist, dam of four runners and four winners to date – including Maritime Mist who is a 5-time winner.
Fashing – the dam of Kali Mist was voted Equus Champion Broodmare in 2003 and an own-sister to Fast Champ, and Mast Abeam by Coastal – an 8-time winner several Listed Races and Donya – a 7-time winner including two Grade 3 wins and the dam of 3 winners herself including Drift Ice who has had 3 wins in Dubai.
Kali Mist is a half-sister to Yard-Arm by Western Winter. He was voted Equus Horse of the Year in 2003, Equus Champion Older Middle Distance Male in 2003.

Fort Beluga – Dynamite Model by Badger Land
The first and only crop of Fort Beluga, this colt is one of two being offered by Spring Valley Stud at the National Yearling Sales.
The dam Dynamite Model is unraced but she has produced three winners to date, including the eight-time winner, Napoleon Dynamite who has also placed 13 times.
Her dam is Dynamite Lady, a seven-time winner including the Gr 1 Garden Province Stakes, the Gr 2 Merchants Stakes and the Gr 3 Rupert Ellis Brown Memorial Plate.
Dynamite Lady has produced five winners including 4-time winner Gia’s Dynamite. Black-Type winners appearing in this dam-line include Marla, Marlagain, Picadilly Miss, Billy Bremner – a 4-time winner in Venezuela and Chivas Regal who has won four times in Denmark and has placed in a Gr 2 race.
