Backworth Stud had their globetrotting Grade 1 winning filly, Chocolicious, win again on Friday night and introduce an exciting new broodmare acquisition, National Seeker, to their broodmare band.

Chocolicious (Kahal – Candy Box by Exclusive Patriot) won convincingly on Friday night at Greyville, in strong company, under jockey Keagan Latham for trainers Herman Brown Jnr and Frank Robinson.

The Backworth-bred 4-year-old filly takes her South African career record to 4 wins (including the Grade 1 Allan Robertson Championship) and 7 places from 13 starts with earnings of R538,155.

Chocolicious had a very respectable Dubai campaign in 2011 with fourth in the UAE 1000 Guineas Trial, third in the UAE 1000 Guineas and second in the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.

Her dam, Candy Box, was herself the Strelitzia Stakes Gr.3 winner as well as the Juvenile Stakes (Fillies) Listed. She is also the dam of winner and Stakes Placed gelding, Top Of The Chocs, by Miesque’s Approval.

Other notable performances by Backworth-breds this weekend include:

  • Diamantaire (Var – Jewel Of Hanui) second in a MR 77 Handicap also on the Greyville card for trainer Alyson Wright.
  • Bermudabreeze (Atso – Bermuda Junction) second in a Maiden Juvenile Plate at Clairwood for trainers Herman Brown Jnr and Frank Robinson.

  • Devonella (Kahal – Devon-Sent) tight head finish third in a MR 81 Divided Handicap at Clairwood for trainer Ivan Moore.
  • Bermuda Prince (Muhtafal – Bermuda Junction) second in a MR 90 Divided Handicap at Arlington for trainer Barry Steenkamp.

Backworth are also proud to announce the acquisition from the Milkwood Sale of a lovely pedigreed filly, National Seeker, who will be joining the Backworth broodmare band.

National Seeker is is a full sister to the top sprinter National Title and black type performers, National Strike and Burmese. National Assembly is currently the damsire of top 3-year-old Trinity House, among a score of other high-class performers. This is the family of such top performers, and sires, as Leopard Strike and Jay Peg.

Backworth are excited about the oportunity to introduce this wonderful family into our broodmare band and are considering sending National Seeker to Var.
