#kznbred Spyda’s Corner Impressing

Spyda’s Corner bred by Rathmor Stud showed his mettle when we won impressively under Keagan De Melo – his second ride on the son of What A Winter and second win in a row. Keagan De Melo said in his post race interview, “for a 3yo to carry 60.5kg like he did, it was very impressive – going forward I think he has a bright future. He isn’t big but he has a lot of substance to him.”

Named by Hollywoodbets Brand Ambassador Brian Baloyi, whose nickname was Spiderman on the soccer field where he represented Bafana Bafana as a goalkeeper, the gelding who is not the biggest is not short of courage – getting his 5th win on Sunday in Pietermaritzburg.

The Howells Stable indicated that he destined for greater things and will look to be lining up on the Golden Horse Sprint Day.

“We have got plans go for the 1200m Gr1 at Hollywoodbets Scottsville in June – its a tall order for a three year old, but we will be nicely handicapped against the others and there are some very good horses around. He thrives on work, he isn’t a very big horse but he has done his job up until now and we can’t ask for more than that from him.”

Hollywood Syndicate racing manager and former Champion Jockey Anthony Delpech commented in Spyda’s Corners previous start that, “he is most probably the best horse we have got at the moment.”

Amongst the field he beat was Dahlia Listed winner Hooves Of Troy, the above average Hail Columbia (IRE) and the Miller’s Black Type speedster who was having his first run back after a break – Great Shaka.

A R320 000 purchase off the 2019 National Yearling Sale selected by Cathy Rymill-Howells and bred and consigned by Rathmor Stud, Spyda’s Corner is out of Kabool mare Clarion Call.

Cathy comments on what caught her eye at the Nationals with Spyda’s Corner, formerly Child Of Winter, as a yearling. “He was an extremely well balanced yearling and even though he wasn’t big, he covered a lot of ground when he walked.”

Breeder Mike McHardy said Spyda’s Corner was “always a fairly small horse, thick set with the most magnificent temperament. He never did anything wrong – he was one of those quiet, unassuming types of horses.”

This is the family of Chant De Nuit, African Ruler and champion female sprinter Ethereal Lady, as well as Amberpondo.

Spyda’s Corner defeated his year older full brother Purple Powahouse in an unforgettable race for the Hollywood Syndicate who own both horses – to win by a nose at Hollywoodbets Greyville in his second career win over 1000m in November last year.

Well done to the Hollywood Syndicate, Howells Racing and Rathmor Stud – he is a horse to be followed with interest!
