Kingmambo Euthanized At 26
Breed-shaping sire Kingmambo has been euthanized at 26 due to the infirmities of old age, Lane’s End Farm announced on 20 January. The influential stallion stood his entire career at the Kentucky operation and was pensioned from stud duty in 2010. Kingmambo will be buried at Lane’s End.
Kingmambo is the broodmare sire of Scott Bros’ son of Giant’s Causeway, Eightfold Path.
A French Gr3 winner and Grand Handicap de Deauville(L) amongst his four career wins over 1200m – 1600m, Eightfold Path is out of French Champion Two and Three Year Old filly, Divine Proportions – a 9-time winner, five of those Gr1 wins. Eightfold Path bears a striking resemblance to his champion dam and his first yearlings are eagerly anticipated at sales this year, beginning the TBA’s National Yearling Sale.
Eightfold Path has developed a reputation for upgrading his mares and producing big strapping foals with powerful hindquarters.
Regally bred by the Niarchos family’s Flaxman Holdings, Kingmambo was by Mr. Prospector out of the champion and two-time Breeders’ Cup Mile (Gr1) winner Miesque. A champion in France at 3, Kingmambo won the French Two Thousand Guineas (Gr1), the St. James’ Palace (Gr1), and the Prix du Moulin (Gr1).
At stud Kingmambo reached even greater heights. He was a truly international sire, siring classic winners and champions in North America, Europe, and Japan. He sired El Condor Pasa, Japanese Horse of the Year; Divine Proportions, European champion at 2 and 3; and Lemon Drop Kid, North American champion older male. He also sired champions King Kamehameha, Henrythenavigator, Rule of Law, Russian Rhythm, Okawango, and Walzerkoenignin.
From an average crop size of less than 64 foals, Kingmambo sired over 85 stakes winners, 50 group/graded winners, of which 24 were Gr1 winners. He also emerged as a top broodmare sire as his daughters have produced Gr1 winners such as Midday, Duke of Marmalade, Camelot, Gozzip Girl, Maids Causeway, and Ruler of the World.
“It is a tough, emotional loss for all of us here at the farm,” said Will Farish. “He’s been with us for a long time, was so very successful and will be greatly missed. We’re very grateful to Stavros, Maria and the whole Niarchos Family for entrusting his care to us.”
“It is every owner/breeder’s dream to have a filly like Miesque,” said Maria Niarchos-Gouazé. “Then for her to give them two classic winners from her first two foals, in Kingmambo and East of the Moon, is unique. Kingmambo was one of a kind who has stamped the breed forever and who has given us so much pleasure over the past 26 years.”
