Foals From Hadlow Stud For 2012

Foals From Hadlow Stud For 2012

A recent visit to Cathy and Jonathan Martin’s Hadlow Stud revealed yet another exciting KZN-bred foal crop for both Cathy Martin and St John Gray, whose Graystone Stud operation is integrated into Hadlow Stud. St John Gray’s stallions include Announce, his son Call To Combat (who has had his first crop of foals this season), Gr 1 winner Jam Alley(AUS) and Modus Vivendi(USA).

St John Gray also owns Announce’s full brother Sarge who stands in the Cape. St John Gray has had significant success with the progeny of Announce and looking at the beautiful new foals by Call To Combat, it seems this legacy will be passed on.

Call To Combat - Hold That Thought by All Fired Up. Image: Candiese Marnewick

Hold That Thought, by All Fired out of Silverware mare Say No More, produced a beautiful colt by Call To Combat who is the splitting image of his freshman sire. The mare is a winner and placed 10 times.

A half-brother to three winners (all by full-brothers Sarge and Announce – the latter being the sire of Call To Combat) clearly this pedigree is a winning combination. One of the winners is Hup-Two-Three, a six-time winner who also placed 15 times.

This family includes Bold Black Types such as sire Speak No Evil (winner of the Gr 1 Mercury Sprint), Magical (who placed second in the Gr 1 SA Derby, Summer Cup and Gr 2 Charity Mile), Gr 3 Clairwood Nursery winner Sugar Daddy and Sunset Glow, to name but a few.

Jam Alley - Dance Tattoo. Image: Candiese Marnewick

Dance Tattoo, by National Emblem out of Misty Dancing by Elliodor, is a half-sister to 2012 KZN Breeders Broodmare Of The Year: Emperor’s Dance. She has produced a beautiful chestnut filly by Jam Alley this past season. Dance Tattoo’s first foal is an unraced three year old by Sarge.

Dance Tattoo is not only a half-sister to Emperor’s Dance (the dam of Horse Of The Year Dancewiththedevil) but also sire War Lord, winner of the Gr 2 Sentinel Sprint. A strong dam-line which St John Gray has had a lot of success with as breeder, owner and trainer, the dam-line includes Bold Black Types such as Modern Beat, Smart As Paint (Gr 1 Natal Fillies Guineas winner), Gr Yellowwood Handicap winner Bushra, Sweet Virginia, Bizet and Mighty Doll.

Bankable - Savo Fare. Image: Candiese Marnewick

Savo Fare(AUS), by Peintre Celebre (the sire of one of St John Gray’s stallions standing at Hadlow Stud, Jam Alley) has produced an outstanding, very strong Bankable filly.

Savo Fare is out of Twig Moss mare Verdigris, and is a half-sister to mulitiple Group winner The Delegator(AUS) – a horse that won six times over 1200 – 1800m, including the Templeton SA Guineas Gr 1, Clairwood Park Juvenile Stakes Gr 2, J.G. Hollis Plate Gr 3, placing six times including four Group races.

Savo Fare has a two year old by Admire Main, and a yearling by Winter Romance.

Call To Combat - Be My Gem. Image: Candiese Marnewick

Be My Gem, the dam of one of St John Gray’s top racemare’s Engagement (who has also begun her broodmare career at Hadlow Stud), has produced a strapping Call To Combat chestnut filly. Be My Gem is by Model Man out of Amber Gem by Argosy, winning twice and placing in the Gr 2 Juvenile Fillies Stakes and Debutante Listed. Engagement is by Announce, who returned to Hadlow Stud last year to continue his breeding career in KZN.

First dam is Amber Gem and this proves a powerful Bold Black Type dam-line. Amber Gem’s winning produce include eight-time winner Amberpondo (a full-brother to Be My Gem), winner of four Graded races including a Gr 1, and full-sister Ethereal Lady who was voted Equus Champion 3yr old Female Sprinter in 2007.

It continues with Greyville 1900 Gr 2 winner Monet, Chant De Nuit, sire High Frequency, multiple Gr 1 winner Arctic Cove, ARCSA Champion Broodmare in 1994 Goldenflo and her progeny which include Flobayou, Foverflo and sire Royal Flo.

Miesque's Approval - Platinum Lass. Image: Candiese Marnewick

Platinum Lass, by Jallad out of Platinum Lady by Centaine, has produced a big eye-catching chestnut filly by Miesque’s Approval. The mare who is a winner herself and placed seven times has now produced a 100% record of four runners and four winners.

They include three-time winners Platinum Bracelet (by Badger’s Drift), Paschal Moon (by Victory Moon) and recent two year old winner Platinum Ruler (by National Assembly) – who broke the course record at Kenilworth when she won on her debut run, in a time of 46.90 over 800m.

Platinum Lass has an interesting pedigree: her third dam is a half-sister to Petrava(NZ), the dam of Jallad, however under the first dam we find the likes of Gr 3 Cup Of Grace, Equus Champion Two and Three Year Old filly Princess Victoria, and of course further back Jallad(USA) himself and his half-sister Hoeburg(NZ).

Call To Combat - Apple Fair. Image: Candiese Marnewick

Grey mare Apple Fair, by Fine Edge out of Apples Of Gold(IRE) by Gods Walk, has produced a substantial, beautifully put together dark bay filly by Call To Combat. Apple Fair is the dam of Apple Princess (by Announce), a seven-time winner who also placed in the Camellia Stakes Gr.2 and Magnolia Handicap Gr.3, as well as producing four other winners.

Apple Princess has also retired as a broodmare to Hadlow Stud for St John Gray.

This immediate dam-line includes the likes of last year’s Equus Champion Broodmare Golden Apple – the dam of 2012 Vodacom Durban July winner Pomodoro, Golden Chariot, Quest For Gold and Autumn Gold. Between her progeny they have amassed 29 wins, including eight Graded wins.

Apple Fair has an unraced three year old filly by Sarge.

Count du Bois - Rock Runner. Image: Candiese Marnewick

Rock Runner, a new addition to Hadlow Stud, is by Centenary out of Aigrette(SNL) by Ginistrelli. A winner who placed three times, she has produced a large outstanding colt by Count Du Bois this season.

She has previously produced a (now three year old) filly by Trippi and has a filly named Cast In Stone by Antonius Pius, a two year old.

Rock Runner is a sibling to four Bold Black Type winners including Listed winner Getaway, full-brother and five-time winner Franklin, Kipketer and Moonlight Gambler.

Further descendants include Nocturnal Affair, a four-time winner who also won overseas in Ireland, Britain, and the United Arab Emirates.

Jam Alley - Emperor's Dance by Caesour. Image: Candiese Marnewick

Saving the best for last! Emperor’s Dance, who should need little introduction as the dam of five-time Gr 1 winning Dancewiththedevil, produced a magnificent Jam Alley colt this season (he was two weeks old when we took this photo) – a colt that oozes quality and athleticsm – a very exciting future prospect for St John Gray.

His full-brother is a chestnut yearling at Hadlow Stud.

Dancewiththedevil has been exported to the UK and we are eagerly awaiting to see the big dark bay KZN-bred mare back in action again in the middle of this year.

Emperor’s Dance is a half-sister to Dance Tattoo above, therefore her dam-line doesn’t bear repeating.

St John Gray has acquired the services of Modus Vivendi, who arrived at Hadlow Stud before the start of the breeding season – let’s hope we have a full-sibling to Dancewiththedevil for 2013.
