Backworth Stud: Quality Foals Arriving

Backworth Stud: Quality Foals Arriving

Kahal (GB) – War Echo (SAF)

“Cetshwayo led a powerful army of young Zulu fighters called “uSuthu” named for their bloodcurdling war cry, “uSuthu” which, when incited during battle, implored the ancestors to beseach upon them the strength and bravery of fallen Zulu warriors.”

…and as the winter chill wanes and the new spring dawns we gaze through the morning mist upon the Zulu hinterland below; from the Indian Ocean in the East to the uKhahlamba Mountains in the North West. And if we’re very still, from the depths of the sacred Umkomaas Valley over the hills to the West, we hear the ghostly war echos of Cetshwayo and his Usuthu… “Usuthu… Usuthu”… as if foreboding the coming of a new Zulu king.

Here is one of our recent arrivals to Backworth, a strong Kahal colt foal out of our mare War Echo, a half sister to Stormsvlei – dam of Pocket Power and River Jetez.

Mambo In Seattle (USA) – Sunset Ridge (SAF)

By Kingmambo’s son, Mambo In Seattle, a three parts brother to Champion sire, Lemon Drop Kid, out of our Tiger Ridge mare, Sunset Ridge, we reckon this sprightly filly foal is bound to ‘surprise’ as she dances towards her racing sunset.

Var (USA) – National Seeker (SAF)

This beautiful colt foal is by Var out of our National Assembly mare, National Seeker, who is half sister to Kochka, recently announced as Champion Two-Year-Old Colt at the 2013 KZN Racing Awards.

Doesn’t he look ‘just so dapper’?

Western Winter (USA) – Dancing Royale (AUS)

The South African breeding industry was hit with the sad news Saturday of the loss of Lammerskraal Stud’s Champion Sire, Western Winter.

The son of Gone West has been a stalwart of South African breeding for well over a decade producing tough and durable racehorses winning at the highest level from 1000m to 3200m. Western Winter was crowned champion first-season sire of 2000/01, remaining in the upper reaches of South Africa’s sires’ tables to date. His other achievements included overall champion sire in 2002/03, 2004/05 and 2005/06 and finishing second in the sires’ table three times. He was twice sire of Horses Of The Year with Winter Solstice and What A Winter.

Western Winter’s other progeny include Yard Arm, Set Afire, Ice Cube, Roxanne, Bad Girl Runs, Swartland, Argonaut, Fair Maiden, Fearless, Nania, Warm White Night, On Her Toes, Lady Windermere, Surveyor, Silver Mist, Oracle West and Capetown Noir.

As if by command from the heavens, our beautiful Australian mare, Dancing Royale (Danehill Dancer – Asian Incline), gave birth to a really beautiful Western Winter colt early Saturday morning. The photos above show Dancing Royale and her colt foal at just 10 minutes old!
