Emmaus, out of a three parts sister to Flying The Flag gave an impressive account of himself in his winning debut as a two year old recently.

Emmaus, a juvenile colt by Invincible Spirit impressed on debut, out of a three-part sister to Bush Hill Stud’s exciting young sire Flying The Flag.

Emmaus is trained by Roger Varian (the trainer of South Africa’s Dancewiththedevil when she was in the UK) and owned by the China Horse Club.

A €580,000 yearling who skipped an opportunity at Newbury in the days leading up to this debut, raced off the pace in eighth through the early fractions.

Stoked up approaching the two pole, the 15-8 favourite delivered his challenge entering the final eighth and was ridden out to hold the late thrust of Sound Bar (Oasis Dream) by a neck.

“He was a bit green and it probably wasn’t his ground, but I thought it was a good performance,” commented winning trainer Roger Varian. “He came home very well once he dropped his head and relaxed, and I was pleased how he came up the hill. He’s got a lot of ability and will improve for the run. We don’t have any lofty short-term targets and he’s certainly one to look out for next year.”

Cassandra Go, a half to sire Verglas (Ire), is also the dam of G3 Summer Stakes winner Theann, who produced GI Rodeo Drive Stakes victress Photo Call (Galileo).
