Today’s racing at Clairwood threw up a real surprise in the 7th race on the card. The highly fancied Australian colt, Delago Deluxe who was expected to “ace the race”, was beaten into third place, by veteran campaigner, Maliyakhe.

Delago Deluxe, who was Champion 2YO colt of 2011, was expected to run away with the laurels in MR 104 sprint over 1200m. However he hadn’t reckoned with Maliyakhe who showed that age didn’t mean a thing, if you’ve that swing!

Son of Summerhill-based stallion, Muhtafal, Maliyakhe recorded his 9th win of his 5 year racing career.

So what you might say! Well not only is Maliyakhe a R340 000 2006 National Sales graduate, but he is a KZN bred horse. His win today demonstrates not only the enormous depth of the talent coming from KZN, that the National sale has thrown up over the past decade, but they, like a good car, they keep on going and winning too!

Prospective buyers would do well to keep this in mind when casting their eyes over the horses on offer from KZN.

They are a force to be reckoned with and should never ever be underestimated.

Congratulations to Sabine Plattner and trainer Yogas Govender.
