Broodmare Roses For Lizzy pulled off a rare feat for breeder Bruce Le Roux, producing three winners in one week and included in that result a double on Sunday at Hollywoodbets Greyville.

The National Emblem mare seems to produce a stamp amongst her progeny and all by different sires – whilst none of them are the tallest, they certainly make up for it in substance and strength with stout top lines, well muscled and good bone and all with a penchant for speed.

Justaguything, a handsome 6yo son of Just As Well, pulled off his 8th career victory on 4 January and managed back to back victories. He beat Blackwhitedynamite home over 1200m. A picture of consistency for the past year, Justaguything has had 14 starts in the past year, winning three of those and only out of the money on one occasion! Not a bad return for a yearling sold for R130 000 at the 2018 KZN Yearling Sale.

Roses For Lizzy in the centre, fends off the opposition easily in the feature. Image: Candiese Lenferna

Trained by Gavin Van Zyl for owners Lucky Vest 12 CC (Nom: Mr S Govender), Team G Racing and Messrs E A Budlender & P R Rencken, he has earned R651,750 in stakes.

Four days later the double came, starting with the Kom Naidoo trained Aunty Lizzy – a daughter of Crusade. The chestnut filly won by almost a length, beating the decent Graded Stakes Placed Irfaans Boy, as well as Pray For Rain amongst the field. Ridden by Kabelo Matsunyane, Aunty Lizzy won for the 6th time in the NBT African Holly Handicap. The four year old is owned by Miss Trinisha Pillay, Messrs Kenny Govender & S Govender and 1000m seems to be her game. Unsold on an online sale, the chestnut filly has earned just over R400 000 in stakes to date.

The day ended with Michael Roberts trained Calulo, winning for Ralphs Syndicate and pocketing a lucky punter R1,5-million from the Hollywoodbets Punters Challenge. She was 8/8 for winning Hollywoodbets Punters Challenge winner Alan Barkhuizen on the day, ridden by Rachel Venniker – who stated it was a special win as well for her, as Calulo gave Rachel her first win as an apprentice in July 2021.

It was the 5th career win for the daughter of Toreador who also relishes a sprint distance of 1000m. Calulo was a R25 000 buy from the KZN Yearling Sale in 2019, and has earned R290 000 to date.

Calulo returns to the winners enclosure, giving her a trainer a double on the day and a lucky winner R1,5-million. Image: Candiese Lenferna

Roses For Lizzy by National Emblem has a pedigree loaded with speed and Black Type; out of a Harry Hotspur mare, Cockney Pride can be found under the second dam in the pedigree, followed by two South African exports under the third dam – Grand Emporium who excelled to win the Gr1 Daily News 2000, the Gr1 Triple Crown 1600 and two Gr2’s in Dubai for stakes of R701,930 and £8,250.00.

The other is Gr2 winner Singapore Sling, who earned R1,383,750 and HK21,321,511 respectively.

It is also the family of Arcsa / Equus Winners Whistling Dixie and Ice Cube.

Bruce Le Roux, who now breeders in partnership with Tinus Gericke under the Blue Sky Thoroughbreds banner, is enjoying another exceptional season with almost 38% winners to runners and just over a R1-million in stakes earned from 32 runners. Blue Sky Thoroughbreds is not far behind, with 35% winners to runners.

Congratulations to all concerned on great results!

Sandre Trethewey’s pretty chestnut mare Wysiwyg will be represented by two runners on Sunday’s Gr1 Golden Horse Sprint Day.

Image: Candiese Lenferna

The chestnut mare is resident on Sandra’s budding horse stud and flower farm in New Hanover, outside of Pietermaritzburg and she has a smashing son of Act Of War who has recently been weaned.

Wysiwyg hasn’t been covered for the 2021 season and Sandra said she was still considering stallions for the special mare for the upcoming season. She is an intelligent mare with a kind disposition and a peculiar habit of lifting her front leg and bending her knee when she requires attention!

A daughter of Mullins Bay and a R100 000 Ready To Run Sales graduate herself in 2012, is a half-sister to 12-time winner Mannequin, from the family of Gr1 2nd placed #kznbred Kalami.

Aisling. Image: Candiese Lenferna

Wysiwyg is becoming something special – her last three foals are the juvenile Aisling, racing in the Gr1 Allan Robertson on Sunday for Roy Moodley and trainer Kom Naidoo, and Bohica – the handsome son of Capetown Noir has a shout in the Gr1 Golden Horse Sprint, jumping from gate number 9. He will be ridden by S’manga Khumalo for team Azzie.

Aisling, by Visionaire has Luke Ferraris in irons from stall gate number 2. Aisling has won twice from five starts and placed – she is a winner over the course and distance.

The handsome Bohica pictured in the parade ring prior to the Ready To Run Cup in 2019. Image: Candiese Lenferna

Bohica is a 5-time winner who sold for R300 000 off the 2018 Ready To Run Sale bred and consigned by Summerhill, and been unlucky in his penultimate 2 starts where he almost snatched a Gr2 victory from Vars Vicky by the closest of margins, and again a head from True To Life in the Gr3. He was beaten by a flying Rio Querari into 2nd place in the Gr1 Computaform Sprint and has won up to 1600m in distance.

Her other two foals are winners – Proposition (also Visionaire) and Bartholdi – a 3-time winner by Act Of War trained by the father and son combination of Adam and Mike Azzie.

We look forward to Sundays results!

Cathy Martin of Hadlow Stud has given us an update on First Arrival at Hadlow Stud and the mighty mare’s daughter who has joined her, currently in foal to Visionaire.

Both mares are owned by Anne and Bruce Nicholas of Hallmark Thoroughbreds.

First Arrival is worthy of a Broodmare Of The Year accolade – the smart Northern Guest mare is the type that every breeder wishes to have standing in their paddocks, having produced two Group horses that were exported amongst them – that in itself an impressive feat.

Her daughter, The Party’s On (by Muhtafal) is in foal to Gr1 Kings Bishop winner Visionaire and has a Duke Of Marmalade yearling colt at Hadlow. She has bred three winners to date by Jay Peg and Pathfork, and already the grand dam to a winner.

The Party’s On. Image: Cathy Martin

First Arrival, herself no slouch on the track and earning Spey Bridge Champion 3YO Filly in 1999 with 6 wins including two Gr3’s, has produced 10 runners and 10 winners, 7 of them achieving Black Type.

They include Let’s Rock And Roll, a full brother to The Party’s On, voted Equus Champion 3yr old male sprinter in 2006 and include a Gr1 win in the Golden Horse Sprint. The next foaling produced Beat Patrol, another by Muhtafal who was Gr3 placed with 6 wins, and the next to impress was a 2008 colt by Western Winter, Rock The Country, who managed to win Zimbabwe’s major features including the Castle Tankard.

First Arrival produced a Jet Master filly in 2010, aptly named In The Fast Lane, trained in South Africa by the Snaiths. She would also provide another Equus Award for her dam, voted Equus Champion 3YO Filly in 2014, with 5 wins including 2 Gr1’s – the Woolavington 2000 and the Cape Fillies Guineas. She was exported to Great Britain.

In The Fast Lane.

Light The Lights, a full brother to Rock The Country, followed after that and won the Gr2 Peninsula Handicap for Glen Kotzen. The gelding was sold on to race in Dubai, where he has won three races including a Gr3 and a Listed in the care of Mike De Kock. He has since changed hands, trained by S Seemar for owner Sean Ewing.

Two more Black Types followed – a filly and a colt by Philanthropist respectively, Gr3 placed Party Crasher and Gr1 placed Pack Leader.

Wendy Whitehead was chosen to give Keep On Dancing a hands on approach, a beautiful daughter of Silvano. Wendy says after winning at Hollywoodbets Scottsville, “We went the extra mile for this girl as she had a severe injury as a youngster which left her claustrophobic, which caused her to box walk (run) her stable. Jane Thomas, thank you for your trust in me – we built her a paddock outside with a shelter roof and we haven’t looked back, she is happy and produced this fantastic result for owners Bruce and Anne Nicholas Hallmark Stud!” It appears we may see more from Keep On Dancing when racing makes a return in SA.

Jane Thomas has a 2yo colt in pretaining named Summa Cum Laude (by Vercingetorix) and First Arrival’s last foal is a yearling filly, another by Vercingetorix who has made a deep impression already in his young stud career.

The top priced yearling sold for First Arrival was Light The Lights, knocked down for R1,2-million at the 2014 National Yearling Sale. Her progeny averaged R494 444 each for 9 babies sold at auction in her lifetime.

Congratulations to the Nicholas family for a mare that has brought them plenty of success and joy, and may First Arrival enjoy her retirement in Mooi River.

A racehorse that is sending a murmur of excitement through the South African racing community is the unbeaten Rainbow Bridge, a winner of three Gr3 races and unbeaten from five starts.

The son of Ideal World is bred by Mauritzfontein and Wilgerbosdrift, but interestingly his damline is entirely a KZN pedigree – with stallions Jet Master / Rambo Dancer / Our Casey’s Boy in the female line.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-8834" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/IMG-20181115-WA0043-3-300x169.jpg" alt="Pas De Basque with her Duke Of Marmalade two years ago.
Born in the Cape, his dam Halfway To Heaven, a winner of a Gr3 Prix Du Cap and Listed race amongst her seven wins is by KZN-bred Champion sire Jet Master and in turn out of KZN-bred Pas De Basque, a mare that stood at Ingrid Klug’s Wynnholme Stud until her passing from a heart issue two years ago – she left behind a filly by Duke Of Marmalade.

Ingrid picks up the story of how she came to own the daughter of Rambo Dancer, who she admits, was a bit light on pedigree but had produced a really good horse in Halfway To Heaven and a winner by Lecture, and possessed that special something that made Ingrid sure she could be a broodmare of note.

“I bought Pas De Basque from a girl based in Johannesburg who had her as a riding horse – a mutual friend had advised that she was looking for a home for Pas De Basque. She was not the easiest broodmare to manage when it came to stud duties, and was retired from breeding altogether – she either reabsorbed or kept aborting her foetuses.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-8831" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/CAN_4673-300x209.jpg" alt="Hawwaam wins first time out at Turffontein in SA's debut 'hands and heels' race.
“She was a daughter of Rambo Dancer who I love and no slouch on the track being an 8-time winner – that was one of the factors that sold me on her. I looked up her breeding and thought this pedigree could be a real mare prospect.

In her previous breeding career before becoming a riding horse, she was a difficult mare to breed with, and her previous owners tried for years to get her into foal, even sending her to Onderstepoort (veterinary facility in Johannesburg) for advice.

“I sent in her first year with me, to Kahal as I liked the Machiavellian cross with Rambo Dancer, and she reabsorbed. I had wanted to send her back for the second year but sadly Kahal died. I then leased her to Clive Murphy and he sent her to Byword which produced a foal – we put her on Regumate for the duration of her pregnancy and she managed to produce a live foal.”

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-8835" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/IMG-20181115-WA0044-1-167x300.jpg" alt="Pas De Basque pictured as riding horse. She had already foaled Halfway To Heaven, the dam of Rainbow Bridge. She had already foaled Halfway To Heaven, the dam of Rainbow Bridge.

The following mating she was sent to Duke Of Marmalade and the filly will go to racing early next year for Clive Murphy. She has been named Miss Marmalade and sadly she was orphaned as a foal. Ingrid describes her as being a lot like her mother, a very nice filly. Ingrid states “My plan was to send her to Twice Over, what a mating that would have been!”

“I always had a feeling about her pedigree and I thought it would work, and thats why I felt I could take a chance with her. I liked Rambo Dancer in particular, which also gave me Fly Away Home which produced Black Wing – again evidence of the Machiavellian (Mr Prospector) x Rambo Dancer cross [which also produced No Worries].”

Rainbow Bridge sold for R300 000 from what appears to be a superior crop of yearlings from the 2016 Nationals. He was sold to the Late Chris Gerber and has earned over R600 000 in stakes.

Halfway To Heaven also produced Hawwaam, a very handsome Silvano colt who won first time out in South Africa’s very first ‘hands and heels’ race recently at Turffontein. Trained by Mike De Kock, the million Rand purchase is owned by Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum.

Rainbow Bridge trained by Eric Sands is likely to be headed to the Queen’s Plate and Met in the new year.

It seems that even though Pas De Basque was plagued with challenges when it came to the breeding shed, she appears to have begun a legacy that will be forever etched into the history books.

Rainbow Bridge is an early favourite for the Gr1 Sun Met.

The big quiet bright bay mare who was voted KZN Breeders Broodmare Of The Year in 2011, is fast establishing herself a dynasty with six daughters acquired by leading Thoroughbred nurseries in both South Africa and overseas – going on to produce six winning progeny between them, including in Ireland and more recently a Listed winning juvenile at Fairview – Queen Forever on Friday, whilst her grandson So Var won at Turffontein this week.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-5679" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/GypsyqueenKahal2012-300x278.jpg" alt="Gypsy Queen with Romany Prince at foot. Image: Rathmor Stud

There is a saying that one man’s loss can be another man’s gain, and in the case of Gypsy Queen (who has a name sake racing currently by Gitano Hernando) it was Rathmor Stud who purchased the mare in 2003 at the Burwell Stud Dispersal Sale, for R55 000.

There is no exact science when it comes to breeding and that is what is part of the fun of it – Gypsy Queen again proves this point in that she is a full sister to two Gr2 SA Oaks winners amongst their other Stakes wins – namely Royal Prophecy and Noble Destiny – yet Gypsy Queen was unplaced in one start at age 3.

Gypsy Queen has no doubt trounced her Bold Black Type sisters at stud, whose progeny have won but not excelled to the the heights of Gypsy Queen.

The 23 year old mare with big honest eyes, a long black forelock and a quality about her, produced a Noble Tune filly last year for Rathmor Stud – a combination of the best to the best, there is of course the sentimental aspect of their great broodmare producing to one of South Africa’s most exciting stallion prospects, a resident of Rathmor Stud.

Gypsy Queen’s first daughter to go to stud was Among Royalty, who produced three winners for breeders Collingwood Stud. Rathmor have retained a daughter – Golden Earings (by Fort Wood) bears a striking resemblance to her dam and will foal her first baby this coming season to Noble Tune.

Leading breeding establishment Varsfontein have two of Gypsy Queen’s daughters at stud (both bred by Rathmor) – the Jallad mare Queen Of All and Gypsy Madonna. Golden Earings full sister, Gypsy Madonna, has foaled to Judpot (2015) and Gimmethegreenlight (2016). Sold for R1,2million as a yearling, Gypsy Madonna won twice and placed fourth in a Listed race.

Queen Of All gave her own dam, her first Black Type as a grand dam, with the Scribante-owned juvenile filly by Gimmethegreenlight, winning the Lady’s Slipper Stakes (Listed) at Fairview on Friday.

The filly has now recorded two wins from three starts for trainer Alan Greef – a R130 000 purchase off the 2015 Val De Vie Yearling Sale, she has bought her ticket to join Piemonte Stud in Summerveld as a broodmare in the future.

Another daughter Surabi (by Wolfhound) won the Gr2 Camellia Stakes and the Listed Gardenia, and placed in several Graded Stakes races.

A resident of Maine Chance Farms, she has produced 4-time winner Sundari (including the Non-Black Type RA Flamingo Mile) and Monday’s winner, So Var – the latter trained by Gavin Van Zyl for Michael Leaf.

It is the second win for So Var, who has also won and placed from all of five of his starts.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-6522" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/009.jpg" alt="Gypsy's Warning (SAF) with Joel Rosario up wins the Matriarch Stakes GI at Hollywood Park, Inglewood Calif.
Last but not least of course is the Mogok filly that put Gypsy Queen on the map – her great Gr1 winning daughter on two continents, Gypsy’s Warning.

Rathmor-bred Gypsy’s Warning was sold at the Keeneland November sale for $1.05 million, offered as a racing/broodmare prospect.

Sold by Denali Stud on behalf of Team Valor and Green Lantern Stable to dissolve the partnership, she was purchased by Flaxman Holdings who bred her sire, Mogok.

Gypsy’s Warning originally sold for R170 000 at 2007 National Yearling Sale to the Howells Racing Stable.

She went on to earn R1,267,505 and $378,333 respectively.

Gypsy’s Warning won five races in South Africa and two wins in America. From the age of 2 to 5 she has won over distances of 1200 – 1800 metres, including the Gr1 Golden Slipper, the Gr1 Woolavington 2000, Gr1 Empress Club Stakes, Gr2 Ipi Tombe Challenge and the Gr3 Strelitzia. In America she placed in the Gr1 Beverly D Stakes, Gr1 Yellow Ribbon and third in the Miss Liberty Listed Stakes.

Her first foal, a filly by Street Cry named Know, won and placed in Ireland from seven starts. Gypsy’s Warning has since foaled to Animal Kingdom.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-6520" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/IMG_0576-queenforever-223x300.jpg" alt="Queen Forever pictured in the sales ring at Val De Vie. Image: Candiese Marnewick

Gypsy Queen’s Black Type achievements at stud havent stopped there, and her Gr3 son of Kahal is likely to line up in the KZN Breeders Million Mile on 25 June. Five-time winner Romany Prince won the Gr3 London News Stakes and the Drum Star Listed for trainer Ormond Ferraris.

The R400 000 National Yearling Sales graduate has in addition, placed in several Graded Stakes races.

He is bred on similar lines to Gypsy’s Warning – her sire Mogok is a half-brother to Machiavellian, whilst Romany Prince by Kahal is a son of Machiavellian – the common denominator being the broodmare Coup de Folie. Interestingly, Know’s sire Street Cry is also a son of Machiavellian.

The last of the great mare’s progeny are still coming through, with the lightly raced chestnut Klawervlei-owned Judy Silvano and Gypsy Queen’s weanling Noble Tune filly to look forward to.

Her ten progeny to sell at sales since 2003 have sold for a combined total of R4,130, 000 between them.

Gypsy Queen is by Royal Chalice and a daughter of Sara’s Warning by Caveat. This family includes the closely related Gr2 Drill Hall Stakes winner Tales Of Bravery, and amongst a plethora of Black Type entries from an overseas damline is nine-time winner Pierre Jourdan, and his siblings Champagne Haze and Belle Rose.

It is a female line that helped to put Rathmor Stud on the map, and with her daughters still in their early days at stud, there will be much more to come from this incredibly special broodmare that has begun her own dynasty.

Who could forget the finish in the Gr2 Camellia Stakes with the two full sisters – Eastern Greeting and Kalaam – challenging each other to the 1160m finish at Turffontein, where they almost dead heated to finish a nose apart for the same trainer and the same connections – an incredible feat indeed!

Breeder Mike Benson of the Kjell Foundation with Al Vino.

Kwinta is another full sibling, the Gr3 winner taking home the KZN Breeders Awards in 2016 for Outstanding Older Female and Outstanding Sprinter. Needless to say, with such outstanding records the fillies have found themselves snapped up by some of the leading Thoroughbred nurseries in the country for stud duties.

Michael Benson has always been a big fan of Kahal and enjoyed immense success with the son of Machiavellian, commenting that Kahal was a vastly underestimated stallion and one of the countries best.

Al Vino, bred herself by the Kjell Foundation has followed suit – the beautiful bay mare has produced two foals and two winners, and in December her colts won within a day of each other – the younger of the two, Wynkelder, doing so impressively on debut.

An imposing chestnut, her eldest son Kanonkop (named after a local vineyard) is a big strapping four year old who has secured his fifth recent career victory for Stanley Ferreira, and has placed four times.

From sixteen starts he has only missed a cheque four times for his owners – his breeder Mr Mike Benson and Mrs D E Turner. His last win came at the Vaal at odds of 20/1 on 22 December over 2400m, winning by a neck under Andrew Fortune and beating a well-bred field of horses.

On 21 December, Wynkelder stepped onto the Scottsville race track for the first time.

Purchased for R100 000 at the 2015 National Yearling sale, the aptly named Wynkelder is in training with Tony Rivalland and the three year old gelding won over the 1400m clear by almost a length and a half for his owners Messrs G N Cumming, Clint Larsson, A S Potts, trainer Tony Rivalland and Mrs Mary Liley, at massive odds of 50/1. Wynkelder will definitely be one to add to the watch list for the future.

Al Vino won three times at the track and placed eight times. Her dam line is brimming with Black Type down the page, her first dam producing six runners and six winners – three of them Black Type; in turn her progeny went on to produce the likes of Yer-Maan, Nordic Breeze, Ice Wine and Rushing Wind.

Wynkelder wins easily on debut. Image: Candiese Marnewick

Al Vino is out of Montrachet by Foveros, in turn out of a Prince Tor mare Sauturne and the rest of the pedigree page includes Sweet Seduction, Noble Century and Captain’s Gal to name but a few.

After the untimely passing of the ultra consistent Kahal, Al Vino was sent to Mogok (a half-brother to Machiavellian by Storm Cat and the sire of American Gr1 winners The Apache and Gypsy’s Warning) and a 2015 filly, Marsanne, will be coming through.

Al Vino is back in foal this year to Bush Hill Stud’s very exciting young son of Galileo, Flying The Flag.

The Scott Bros have introduced a magnificent Crusade colt out of their home-bred mare Endangered Species, the dam of 2015 Gr1 Gold Cup winner Wild One.

A big mare both in substance and height with a kind disposition, Endangered Species is barren this year but will be covered by Mogok once more.

The daughter of former Scott Bros’ resident sire Sapieha is out of a Gate Dancer mare Swallows Dance (SNL), won twice and placed three times over 1200m – 1400m. Described as producing really big horses, the dam of Wild One has produced five runners and five winners to date, including Gr1 Mercury Sprint placed Extinct (by Spaceship).

Endangered Species’ third dam is First Swallow, a two-time winner in Britain who came to South Africa to win nine times and be voted Champion Older Mare in 1978 after winning the Gr1 Computerform Sprint. Her daughter went on to produce Gr2 Gold Vase placed Lunch Club. This is also the immediate family of Political Pet and sire Gold Rod.

Wild One had an exceptional season prior to his unfortunate passing shortly after the Gr1 Gold Cup, suffering a heart attack in the recovery room post surgery. Trained by Mike De Kock and owned by Sean Philips, Wild One (by Mogok) was crowned Equus Champion Stayer for the season 2014/2015, earning almost R1,800 000 in three racing seasons after being sold for R95 000 at the 2011 Suncoast KZN Yearling Sale.

He also won the Gr3 Lonsdale Stirrup Cup and placed in the Gr1 SA Derby, and second in the KZN Breeders Million Mile in a prep race for the Gold Cup. He was expected to be a big runner in the Gr1 Summer Cup this season. Wild One is the fourth Gr1 winner for his sire Mogok.

His full-brother Save The Rhino is described as a very big handsome individual, and is said to have plenty of ability. The four year old gelding is a winner over 2000m and has placed twice from his last two starts at Turffontein from the Ormonde Ferraris stable.

Endangered Species’ Crusade colt for the 2015 is a tall, beautiful individual with a regal disposition who catches the eye. Crusade’s first crop are now yearlings, and the progeny of the Gr1 Middle Park Stakes winner will be on sale in 2016. It isn’t difficult to miss the Crusade’s, the son of Mr Greeley stamps his foals with great authority – mostly black individuals with very little to no markings at all which is an encouraging trait of a good stallion.

A speed sire with a confirmed Equinome Speed Gene test of a “C:C”, Crusade has once again received a full book for the 2015 season, his third season at stud for a service fee of R20 000. The KZN Breeders are looking forward to his progeny hitting the tracks in 2017.

The best performed daughter of Admire Main to date, Admiral’s Eye, added yet more Bold Black Type to her pedigree by placing third in the Gr3 Flamboyant Stakes at Greyville behind Same Jurisdiction – the latter a Suncoast KZN Yearling Sale graduate.

Admiral’s Eye has won six times and placed nine, including two Gr1’s – the Thekweni Stakes and the Golden Slipper. She is out of an Elliodor mare named Surfer’s Eye, bred in partnership by Mr Alan Magid and Summerhill Stud. Admiral’s Eye also provided the first win for her sire Admire Main, after placing on debut she won second time out at Scottsville over 1200m by two lengths.

Surfer’s Eye [pictured below] borders on a broodmare phenomenon – having produced eight runners, seven winners – with four of them achieving Black Type status, not a statistic common among broodmares.

They include full-sisters Saltwater Girl and Rapid Flow (both by Modern Day) who also both raced for the owner of Admiral’s Eye, Alesh Naidoo of The Fire Racing Trust. Saltwater Girl placed second in the Gr2 Gold Circle Oaks, as well as third in the Gr3 Flamboyant Stakes and Spook Express Listed. Rapid Flow placed in the Michaelmas Handicap Listed.

Alesh has retained Rapid Flow for stud purposes and she has a foal by Kahal at foot this season. Kahal gave Alesh Naidoo his first Gr1 winner with Love Struck, who has since been exported to Mauritius and continues to race successfully.

The full-sisters amassed 13 wins and placing 39 times between them, almost evenly, each over distances of 1600m – 2400m and stakes of over R1million. The next success to arrive was a son of Solskjaer, Shogunnar, who went on to place second in the Gr1 Summer Cup and third in the Gr1 Daily News 2000.

Trained by Charles Laird, Admiral’s Eye looks to follow in her sisters’ footsteps, certainly securing a future as a broodmare with her pedigree and race record. A R340 000 Ready To Run sales graduate of 2012, from the first crop of her Japanese sire Admire Main standing at Summerhill, she has earned over R800 000 to date.

Surfer’s Eye hasn’t stopped there though – her three year old daughter by Kahal named Surfing Belle recently broke her Maiden to take home her first win by almost two lengths, from just four starts, at Scottsville over 1400m for owner Mario Ferreira and trainer Dennis Bosch. Surfing Belle sold for R750 000 at the 2013 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale.

Surfer’s Eye is by Elliodor out of Irish mare Avy Joan by Malinowski. She was a winner over 1900m and placed five times, earning just R42,600 in stakes. Her imported female line reveals under the third dam, the likes of top sire and Champion Three year old Vaguely Noble as well as German sire Lombard and Lead On Time, amongst many Bold Black Types filling the female line.

Surfer’s Eye has a 2013 Brave Tin Soldier filly, named Bold View, coming through the ranks.

Admire Main, the only son of the brilliant Sunday Silence standing on the African continent at Summerhill Stud, is Japanese-bred and stands a big 16.2hh. In South Africa he has the very exciting Kalamain coming through, a three-time winner and the first horse bred by Lee and Dino Scribante of Piemonte Stud to race and going on to win – from six starts he has won three (all over 1600m), placed second and finished fifth twice.

A beautifully athletic chestnut stallion with a beautiful big-striding walk, Admire Main left Japan in the middle of their breeding season to come to South Africa – leaving behind a crop of horses that are winning successfully on Japan’s tracks. They include 15-time winning Kohaku Fairy, as well as six-time winners’ Mio Charleston and Ripe Main.

A top-class racehorse in his native Japan, Admire Main had four wins – including the Gr2 Aoba Sho Derby Trial over 2400m, and the Gr3 Mainchi Hai over 2000m.

He also placed second in the Gr1 Japanese Derby and third in the Gr1 Kikuka Sho – earning in excess of $2-million US Dollars. He won his races by a combined 22.5 lengths.

Image: Candiese Marnewick/MMVII" width="350" height="247" hspace="10" border="0" align="right"> Vogue is an attractive chestnut mare standing at Peter and Jenny Blyth’s Clifton Stud, and they would never have owned her were it not for a package deal arrangement. By Model Man out of Thousand Nights by Foveros, she descends from a phenomenal dam-line and she is passing this on to her progeny.

“There is quite a story about this mare,” explains Peter Blyth. “I bought all of a package of 25 horses off the owner to secure Vogue, because he was packing up and I knew that this mare was the whole package; she would have gone for a high price if she had been sent to auction. I said to the owner: ‘let’s agree on a price for all of his package which comprised of mares and their offspring. ‘So I bought them all, this about ten years ago. There were some reasonable mares amongst them. I sold many of the others which were not viable.

“After acquiring Vogue I put her to Fort Wood and she produced Fort Vogue which sold for R2.2 million. Her next foal was by West Man, who was standing at Clifton Stud at the time. This, as I opted not to take the risk of travelling her with a Fort Wood foal at foot because of the risk of injury.”

Foaled in 1996, Vogue is out of one of the top broodmares this country has ever seen called Thousand Nights (by the great Foveros). Peter points out that Vogue has a really nice temperament, but that, “She can be strong-willed but she’s not impossible. She is not a big mare, standing about 15.3 but she stands over a lot of ground.”

Her dam Thousand Nights won eight times, including a Listed race, and with that sort of record and being by one of the best sires in South Africa namely the Scott Bros’ Foveros, she was sent to stud. She produced Equus Champion Male Stayer in 2003 and 9 time-winner Highland Night. From the age of 3 to 6, he won over distances of 1600 – 3200m including the Gold Cup Gr.1 which he won consecutively – and the Lonsdale Stirrup Cup, Gr.3. Thousand Nights then produced a full-brother to Highland Night in Night Watch by Badger Land. He was a 5-time winner at 3 to 4 over 1200 – 1800m including Falcon Sprint (L) and he placed 6 times including second’s in the Graham Beck Stakes Gr.3, the Hyperion Handicap (L) and a third in the Gold Challenge Gr.1.

She also produced Prince Asad by Al Mufti, a six-time winner from 3 to 5, versatile over a distance of 1000 – 2800m. His wins include the Gold Circle Derby Gr.2, J & B Met Reserve Stayers Gr.2 and he placed 9 times.

Another son, Warm White Night, a flashy looking bay with white stockings and a big stripe ensured he got the opportunity to go to stud by winning seven times from 2 to 4 over distances of 1000 – 1200m. His wins include the Gold Reef Resorts Medallion Gr.1, Cape Flying Championship (WFA), Gr.1, The Nursery Gr.2, Protea Stakes Gr.3 and the Man O’War Sprint Gr.3. Vogue is a half-sister to these champions.

Vogue held up her end of the bargain and won five races and was placed eight times. She placed second in the Gr 1 SA Fillies Sprint and Vaal Platinum Listed Handicap. She placed in the Swallow Listed Stakes, winning over R300 000 in stakes.

“David Ferraris, who currently trains in Hong Kong, trained Vogue before he left,” Peter adds. “In her very last run, she ran second in August of that year. The going was firm and she unfortunately broke a bone in her foot. Having won 5, with a second in the SA Fillies Gr 1, she would have gone on to be a star, if she hadn’t broken down. She only had 14 starts, and was a very good racehorse.”

Vogue has produced six foals. Her sales record is quite incredible – five of her yearlings have fetched a total of R3,885 000, which means her foals average R777 000 per sale, a tidy sum. Her top-seller was the talented Fort Vogue, a son of Fort Wood. He fetched R2.2 million at the 2007 Emperor’s Palace National Yearling Sale and went onto be a successful racehorse. So much so he was exported to Dubai at the end of last year under the care of Herman Brown Jnr, but he died tragically in January after a morning gallop. He was a six-time winner – his wins included the Gr 2 Peninsula Handicap, Gr 3 Schweppes 1600 and a second in the Gr 2 Premier Trophy.

“I have a Fort Wood weanling filly now, who is a full-sister to Fort Vogue. I’m not sure if I will be putting her onto the market because Vogue is not getting younger.” She is currently in foal to A.P. Answer. There is positive talk about A.P. Answer’s first foals, so Peter hopes that her foal by him will be a stunner.

“She is inclined to breed to the sire. So whatever the sire looks like, she produces. The Jet Master filly which we have just sold was very much a Jet Master. Fort Vogue was a liver chestnut, where as Fort Wood is a bay, but he had many of his father’s features. This Fort Wood filly has similar features to her brother. Her three Divine Force foals were very much like their sire. In hind sight these weren’t good matings, they were based more on sentimentality by the previous owner, as he owned both mare and sire. The two were too small for each other.”

At the recent Emperor’s Palace National Yearling Sale, Peter sold Fort Vogue’s half-sister by Jet Master aptly named Whatalady for R600 000. With this filly’s fine pedigree and outstanding looks very reminiscent of her great sire, there is little doubt she will continue where Fort Vogue left off.
