Beauty Ndlovu’s story is one of a deep rooted passion, a love for horses that found her long before she knew it.

“I grew up at Summerhill Stud where my parents worked,” she says. “Weekends were for helping with the horses. Even though I dreamed of becoming a doctor, something about the horses stayed with me. It grew inside me, and I started enjoying and loving them.”

That early spark eventually became a full time calling. Beauty began working with horses permanently in 2011 under the guidance of Annet Becker. “She always made sure we knew what we were doing,” Beauty recalls with admiration. “It’s been 14 years now, and I still carry with me what she taught me.”

In 2016, Beauty enrolled at the Summerhill School of Equine Management Excellence, a year she credits as pivotal in her career. “I wasn’t great at theory and my classmates and friends were very helpful, and I returned the favour in that I could help my friends with the practical side. Mark Naidoo and Catherine Zolner helped me through as well as my managers Thabani Nzimande (all of the aforementioned working at prominent farms overseas) and Taryn Liebenberg (working at Drakenstein Stud), and together we ended up as the top students,” she says proudly. That same year, she was awarded a National Stud scholarship. “Unfortunately, I couldn’t go due to visa issues – but just receiving it meant so much.”

Today, Beauty is the supervisor at Bloomhill Stud, a role she treasures. “Working at Bloomhill is more than a blessing,” she says. “I’m so grateful to Mr Goss for making it possible, and to Lance and Sandra Trethewey for trusting me with this responsibility as Supervisor of Bloomhill Stud. I wake up happy all day every day at Bloomhill.”

She has a soft spot for foals, despite the sleepless nights and extra care they demand. “I love working with the foals and I love yearling preparation too.” As for advice to anyone thinking of entering the stud industry? “Love the horses. Pay attention. Treat them like your own and enjoy everything you are doing.”

At Bloomhill, Beauty has helped usher in winners from the get-go, many of whom followed her from her Summerhill days – names like Rabada, Wysiwyg (voted KZN Breeders Broodmare Of The Year in 2022 and the dam of Bohica and Bartholdi) and now her winning son Wyzeact, trained by Corne Spies, who’s currently enjoying a break at Bloomhill in Mooi River. “I follow all of our horses on the track. It’s part of the joy to watch them run.”

“In future I wish I could get a chance to go overseas and get more experience, I would love to help people who want to work in this industry.”

When asked about career highlights, Beauty doesn’t point to a single race or title — but to the people, the horses, and the opportunities that have arisen for her.

Sandra Trethewey, owner of Bloomhill Stud, shares high praise for Beauty’s contribution:
“Beauty is an asset to our farm, a real gem. We are very proud to have her heading up our team at Bloomhill Stud.”

A familiar face at sales and always ready to assist during viewings, Beauty and her team at Bloomhill are now preparing for the foaling season, a time of fresh beginnings and long nights. As the racing season draws to a close, the next chapter begins on the stud farms, with new life arriving from 1 August. For Beauty, it’s not just a job – it’s a purpose, and the story is still being written, one foal at a time.

#kznbreds Enjoyed three wins on Sunday at Hollywoodbets Scottsville, with Cathy and Jonathan Martin’s Hadlow Stud enjoying a winner and a second place on the day.

Hadlow’s day started off with the handsome Canford Cliffs colts improving over the mile to finish second for owner Mrs Kuhn, The Honorable Justice Kruger and Mr Krishen Naidoo, trained by Duncan Howells. The colt is well bred out of a Jet Master mare, Touch The Clouds. This is the family of Red Ray and Brutal Force.

Hadlow followed with up with Tienie Prinsloo filly Im The Buzz, the first of a double for the Prinsloo stable and a double for sire Flying The Flag. A consistent sort who collected her second career victory for the Prinsloo family, Im The Buzz has also placed eight times previously. The dam All Abuzz is by Bezrin, in turn out of Polonaise who produced 11-time winner Formation. This is the famed family of Kochka, Jay Peg and Whiteline Fever.

Flag Man picks up the challenge and wins going away from El Dante. Image: Candiese Lenferna

Clifton-bred Flag Man won Race 4, another eye catching colt who was purchased by the Gareth Van Zyl stable for owners Messrs Larry Nestadt, Reon Barnard, Dave MacLean and Gary Player. When the race looked sewn up by El Dante, Flag Man showed an impressive turn of foot to win by half a length going away under Athandiwe Magudlwa. Out of a good Brazilian imported mare Irresistable Chris (Mark Of Esteem) with whom the Van Zyl stable has enjoyed success with sibling Admire Me, also owned by Larry Nestadt. Flag Man has now won two races in a row from only four starts and has placed in the rest, relishing a mile trip and looks to be a horse to follow for KZN’s coming Champion Season.

Clifton Stud also had a second place in Race 2 with Oratorio filly, Run To Rio.

Shot Of Courage receives a thank you kiss! Image: Candiese Lenferna

The day was concluded with Bush Hill-bred Willow Magic gelding, aptly named Shot Of Courage, winning for trainer Timothy Pretorius and passionate owners Mr C M Zoghby & Mrs T F Zoghby. Out of Lee Danzig, herself a top producer of multiple winners including Graded Stakes Placed Malak El Moolook, multiple front winning sprint filly Magicallee (Willow Magic) and the talented Reign As Kings, the Gr3 winning Qui Danzig mare has produced 8 winners in total, boasting 20 wins between them all!

Shot Of Courage is blind in one eye, but that hasn’t stopped the bay gelding doing his best in every outing and built his confidence in 2023, with 15 runs in that year alone for three career wins and only out of the cheques in three of those starts – the type of horse every owner loves in a stable. He won under Serino Moodley over 1000m by a length and a half. Breeders Warwick and Karin Render of Bush Hill Stud have achieved 14 wins this season and almost R2-million in stakes earned. He has earned R237 000 in stakes for his winning connections.

Congratulations to the winning connections!

KZN have welcomed international breeder Michael Moroney to the KZN Breeding ranks, based in Ireland, Michael Moroney’s maroon and green racing colours in the name of the The Poet’s Syndicate have been a familiar sight on South Africa’s racetracks for some time already.

Michael has enjoyed many winners in South Africa and World Pool Gold Cup day proved the cherry on top, with his online sale acquired Pray For Rain winning the LHKIR In December Umngeni Handicap Listed, aptly with Lyle Hewitson aboard for father and trainer Carl Hewitson. It was Michael’s first international trip to South Africa and it paid off handsomely.

The son of Soft Falling Rain won again recently at Hollywoodbets Scottsville.

Michael started off with a mare Magic Potion, and his first foal is a now gelded son of Hat Puntano, as yet unraced and in training with Carl Hewitson named Magic Hattrick. Magic Potion is by Malhub from the family of Luna Child, Ollivander and Sparkling Gem.

A smart acquisition who has produced a smashing Willow Magic colt at foot this season, is African Angel, a 2-time winning daughter of Mogok from the family of Irish Flame and Gr2 winner, Meadow Magic.

Michael has four more mares in foal this season – they include Rise (Noble Tune), a six time winning mare in foal to Danon Platina, New Orleans is in foal to Fire Away and Capriana, a grey by Toreador out of a Shaamit mare, is confirmed in foal to Eden Roc.

There is also Accidental Tourist, a 4-time winning daughter of Gimmethegreenlight out of a Jet Master mare, has been confirmed in foal to Eden Roc – an interesting mating, as Eden Roc’s half brother Sandringham Summit is by Gimmethegreenlight.

African Angel has been confirmed in foal to KZN’s exciting young son of War Front, Declarationofpeace.

Michael had a lot of fun with the above maiden mares mentioned, who won multiple races for The Poets Syndicate before their retirement to Winnie Fourie’s Grace Stables in Nottingham Road, where The Poets Syndicate’s horses are also pretrained. Winnie provides a full service for owners prior to their horses departing for racing stables, from foaling to sales preparation to pretraining from the farm, once known as the famed Invermooi Stud.

Champion Sandringham Summit will return to his birthplace Varsfontein Stud for stallion duties at the conclusion of his racing career.

The champion in action (Pic – Candiese Lenferna)

Leading consultant John Freeman has been mandated to syndicate the son of resident champion Gimmethegreenlight for stallion duties, and he confirmed that “shares literally flew off the shelf” which speaks volumes for the colt’s popularity with local breeders.

“Varsfontein will retain 20 of the 46 shares on offer,” he added. “Thanks to all of the star breeders that are participating.”

Although the colt remains in training – he is after all still just three – Sandringham Summit already boasts impeccable stallion credentials as a juvenile Gr1 winner who has the looks and pedigree as befits his R1.7-million price tag as a yearling.

Trained by David Nieuwenhuizen, the colt made heads turn when he came from an impossible position to win the Gr2 Golden Horseshoe at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Durban July day and earned his Gr1 spurs in the Premiers Champion Stakes, at the expense of by downing the hitherto unbeaten Main Defender, who was over two lengths adrift at the line.

Named last season’s Champion Juvenile, Rakesh Singh’s star colt was perhaps an unlucky loser in this seasonal debut when narrowly beaten by his old nemesis in the Gr3 Betway Graham Beck before finishing third in the Gr2 Dingaans.

Remarkably, he is Gimmethegreenlight’s second Premiers Champion Stakes winner and was preceded by first-crop son Gunner, who likewise, is out of a Captain Al mare.

Significantly, Sandringham Summit offers breeders a wonderful outcross pedigree, free of the all-pervading Northern Dancer and Mr Prospector blood in the first four generations.

His dam Townsend won both the Gr2 Odessa Stud Fillies Championship and Gr3 Diana Stakes, and in addition to Sandringham Summit, she is also dam of Gr1 Gold Medallion winner Eden Roc, who has just finished covering his first book of mares at Clifton Stud.

Townsend is a half-sister to Gr1 Champions Challenge hero Regal Ransom. This is also the female line of Gr2 Guineas winner Zapatillas and Gr2 Dingaans second Shoemaker, both of which were bred at Varsfontein.

-sportingpost.co.za

**Eden Roc stands for R10 000 live foal and is owned by the KZN Breeders Club.

KZN Breeder, Ms Nothemba Mlonzi of Mwetwood Stud enjoyed a feature win as an owner and breeder on Wednesday at Hollywoodbets Greyville, winning the River Indigo Handicap Non Black Type.

#kznbred Petit Verdot, bred by Clifton Stud, finished second.

Her beautiful chestnut filly aptly named Mvulazana, which means Soft Falling Rain after her sire, is immaculately bred out of a Tapit mare Grey Light, and secured her 5th victory for trainer Wendy Whitehead under another marvellous ride from Calvin Habib.

Nothemba Mlonzi expressed her joy and excitement at the win, and Mvulazana will be returning to her place of birth to stand at stud when the time is right.

Nothemba has already made waves, with Master Keys her first feature filly produced.

Congratulations to all concerned.

Turffontein trainer Robyn Klaasen said the most likely route for her Gr 2 Jonsson Workwear Dingaans winner Purple Pitcher (New Predator) would be the WSB Triple crown series, although she has not ruled out a trip to Cape Town (where the big race options for him would be the Gr 1 L’Ormarins King’s Plate, the Gr 1 WSB Met and/or the Gr 1 Cape Derby.

She said about the Bush Hill Stud-bred Mr “Stincky” Pooe-owned colt, “The goal was always the Triple Crown, so probably not looking elsewhere for now, but things can change we never know.”

She said Purple Pitcher had come out of his Dingaans win well and he would probably have a preparation run in one of the minor three-year-old features before tackling the Gr 2 WSB Gauteng Guineas on February 3.

Robyn admitted she believed Purple Pitcher “was beat” by Gimmeanotherchance in the Dingaans as they neared the line.

He had chased the latter for the length of the straight and made steady inroads, but still had two lengths to make up with just 50 metres to go.

Kabelo Matsunyane then changed whip hands and the colt changed legs and took off to get up by a quarter of a length.

Robyn said, “He looks like a very nice horse and I’m very lucky to have him. I think he will be better over further. As could be seen in the Dingaans he only got going in the last couple of hundred metres.”

She felt the Guineas would actually be the hardest leg for him.

“If he can win the Guineas, I don’t see much who can beat him in the next two.”

Sandringham Summit (a half brother to the KZN Breeders Club owned stallion EDEN ROC) will be the obvious danger in the Gr 1 WSB SA Classic over 1800m, but Robyn believes Purple Pitcher is better suited to the Turffontein Standside track than the latter is.

Purple Pitcher is a half-brother to the Crusade sprinter-to-1400m horse Miss Daisy, but there is stamina further down the pedigree. He is from the family of Met winner Alastor as well as Cape Derby winner Eyes Wide Open.

Talk Of The Town showed huge promise, winning three of his five starts before injury curtailed what was anticipated to be a glittering racing career.

Talk Of The Town by multiple Gr1 producing sire Var is bred by Eston-based stud Backworth, out of a Street Cry mare Street Wise.

It is a leading female line, and includes the likes of Redoute’s Choice and Manhattan Rain under the third dam.

Kahal as a broodmare sire has won a Gr1 and a Gr2 in the space of a week in two different provinces, as the broodmare sire of Ambiance-bred Royal Victory and Kwinta’s Light bred by Syrilla Stud.

The deceased son of Machiavellian out of a Green Desert mare, who stood at Summerhill Stud for much of his career prior to his transfer to Bush Hill Stud, saw his handsome grandson take the Gr1 Betway Summer Cup a week at Turffontein, followed up with Justin Snaith’s beautifully bred Kwinta’s Light, taking the Gr2 WSB Southern Cross Stakes.

Kwinta’s Light is by Gimmethegreenlight and races in the colours of Maine Chance Farms.

It was a double at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth for the Shadwell Stud-owned Kahal, has his tall leggy grand-daughter won Race 4, out of mare Cousin Annie.

Kwinta’s Light is out of Kwinta, an own sister to Eastern Greeting and Kalaam – all bred by KZN breeders Kjell Foundation’s Benson family based in Karkloof.

All of the aforementioned mares are resident as broodmares in the Cape.

Kahal also happens to have come full circle in KZN, as Blue Sky Thoroughbreds Chimichuri Run is out of Gr1 winner Spiced Gold, by Kahal. ‘Chimi’ as he is affectionately known has his first foals on the ground this season and they are the spitting image of their sire, with powerful hindquarters and quality heads.

Excluding Saturdays Hollywoodbets Kenilworth results which have been updated as of yet, Kahal is on 31% winners produced for the season and over R5,7-million in stakes earned.

Rathmor Stud’s beautiful grey-almost white Witblits has won three races in a row since her relocation to Gauteng to the stable of Tony Peter and relishing the extra distance on offer.

The beautifully-bred daughter of Danon Platina, out of Galileo mare Untoward is bred on the same cross that produced Gr1 Epsom Derby winner Auguste Rodin, and the connections are excited for her future, toying with thoughts of having a tilt at the Oaks in the coming months.

Owned by Suzette and Basie Viljoen, the grey filly sold for R720 000 at the 2022 August 2YO Sale, consigned by Millstream Farm.

This is the family of Eliza and Hong Kong Black Type 6-time winner, Absolute Fantasy.

Untoward has a Lancaster Bomber for her 2021 year, and has since visited Rathmor’s stallion Declarationofpeace (War Front), who has a yearling named Chaos Queen.

Congratulations to all concerned.
