The Bloodhorse.com reports that Rachel Alexandra, the 2009 Horse of the Year who produced her first foal this year, has been pronounced in foal to Darley stallion Bernardini. Rachel Alexandra produced a colt by Curlin 22 January of this year.
The mare’s status for the 2012 breeding season was announced by owner Stonestreet Farm in a Twitter message and on Rachel Alexandra’s Facebook page. The posting did not say when the mating between Rachel and Bernardini took place.
Bernardini, who stands at Darley for a $150,000 stud fee, is the sire of the first foal produced from 2010 Horse of the Year Zenyatta.
Owners Jerry and Ann Moss have announced that 2010 Horse of the Year Zenyatta will be bred this year to Gainesway Farm stallion Tapit.
The champion Street Cry mare, who is boarded at William Farish’s Lane’s End Farm near Kentucky, was represented by her first foal when she produced a Bernardini colt 8 March.
Bernardini is a son of Lane’s End’s two-time leading sire A.P. Indy. Tapit, the second-leading sire of 2012, is a son of the A.P. Indy stallion Pulpit and is out of the stakes-winning mare Tap Your Heels.
Tapit, the Wood Memorial Stakes (gr. I) winner who stands for $125,000 at the Beck family’s Gainesway Farm near Lexington, has been represented by seven grade I winners, including 2011 champion 2-year-old male Hansen.
A handsome Tapit colt commanded $1 million during the second hour of the Fasig-Tipton Florida select sale of 2-year-olds in training yesterday (26 March). He was the highest-priced horse that had been sold during the auction.
Bloodstock agent Nick Sallusto, representing Steven Marshall’s Black Rock Thoroughbreds, signed the sale ticket for the bay juvenile.
During the early portion of the sale, the second-highest price of $875,000 was listed as paid by John Ferguson, agent for Sheikh Mohammed, for a Bernardini colt. Consigned by Hartley/DeRenzo Thoroughbreds, agent, as Hip No. 40, the colt was produced from Jolie Boutique, a Northern Jove mare who has also produced stakes winner Millennium Storm.
