Emperors Palace Summer Ready-To-Run Sale Results

The Emperors Palace Summer Ready-To-Run Sale took place at Summerhill Stud on Wednesday and fortunately the weather timed itself perfectly for the Stallion Parade and Sale consisting of 65 lots.

In the ususal sophisticated Summerhill-style, guests arrived at the School Of Excellence greeted by Champagne and shown into the School Of Excellence, where the gallops were being presented on a screen to a full room of eager buyers. Mick gave an inspiring speech and also announced the Stakes increase of the Emperors Palace Ready-To-Run Cup to a whopping R3-million stake – and several horses on the sale qualify for the race in 2013.

Buyers were invited to view the stallions on parade, whose progeny were going up for auction at two in the afternoon after a sumptuous lunch presented by Hartford House.

Stallions on show began with the Japanese import Admire Main, the only son of the great Sunday Silence on the African continent, who has already produced several winners in Japan from his first crop – from 800m through to 1700m.

Next on show was A.P. Arrow. A big, imposing individual who was a Gr 1 performing racehorse and an American millionaire, out of a Mr Prospector mare, Mick pointed out this cross had produced champion sires in America such as Pulpit, who passed away recently – A.P. Arrow’s progeny are scheduled to hit the tracks soon and it is going to exciting to see what comes from them.

Brave Tin Soldier, by Storm Cat, made a suave entry – a beautiful stallion with a magnificent head – his equally brilliant pedigree saw him sold for $3-million US dollars as a weanling, his dam being a half-sister to sire Fusiachi Pegasus. His progeny are as good-looking as their sire.

Mullins Bay, by Machiavellian out of Bella Colora by Bellypha, has got his stud career off to a bang with a number of winners including Tinchy Stryder, a three-quarter sister to Mannequein. Tinchy Stryder remains unbeaten from two starts – winning her debut by four and half lengths. Her full-sister, Lot 46 Wysiwyg, sold at the sale for R180 000 to Wally Brits.

Another stand out for Mullins Bay is the very useful Gitiano, a three-time winner and two places from eight starts. Mullins Bay is a very exciting young stallion prospect for KZN, and Mick pointed out that some of his winners have come along early at two which was unexpected considering the stallion only raced at three, winning a Gr 3, The John Smith’s Magnet Cup and placing second in a Listed and Gr 3 in that year, over distances of 1800m – 2100m.

The last stallion to be shown was the beautiful dark-bay son of Danehill, Solskjaer. The sire of Mauritian Horse Of The Year Ice Axe and Shogunnar, who placed second in the Gr 1 Sansui Cup as well as the London News Gr 3, he also place third in the Daily News 2000 Gr 1 behind Jackson.

The top filly sold on the sale was Lot 26, an impressive bay filly named Salander – by Stronghold(IRE) out of Forest Edge by Complete Warrior(USA). She was also the top-seller, fetching R250 000 and from the last crop of the deceased Stronghold. A half-sister to two winners, including Gr 1 placed Lisa Anne, this is the family of Gr 2 winner, Well Dressed – and includes Best Dressed, Hamildon Hill, Divine Heights and Gr 1 Dubai Racing Cup winner African Appeal. She was sold to ex-jockey Robbie Hill, now training under the name Hill Racing.

The top-selling KZN-bred colt was Lot 13, Son Of The Sea, by Mullins Bay out of Celestial Flame by All Fired Up. A half-brother to six winners with 15 wins between them, this mature, good-looking colt is a half-brother to six-time winner Celestial Moon. He sold for R140 000 to Louis Goosen Racing Stables. The top-priced colt of the sale as a Brazilian import by Linngari, who reached R220 000, named Rei Da Bavaria, sold to Janet Baker Properties.
