WORLD champion Black Caviar has been retired.

Part owner Neil Werrett, flanked by trainer Peter Moody and the other co-owners, announced that the six-year-old’s victory in the TJ Smith Stakes at Randwick last Saturday had been her final race.

Werrett, choking back emotion, said it had been decided over the past 36 hours that the time had arrived to end the mare’s incomparable career that saw her win all her 25 starts.

Moody said he and the owners had discussed what was best for the mare.

“We decided that 25 was a great number and she had done us all proud,” Moody said. “Collectively we decided the mare is in great shape. We thought long and hard about racing another season. We thought about Ascot, we thought about Brisbane and Adelaide, but at the end of the day we believe she has done everything we have asked her to do. We don’t believe she could have done anything more. It is the right time to call it a day on what has been a wonderful career of arguably one of the finest horses we have ever seen.”

Black Caviar retired with a myriad of records, including an Australian record for consecutive wins, most Group 1 wins (15), highest ranked horse on the World Thoroughbred Rankings and most consecutive Group 1 wins (8).
