Highdown Stud was founded in 1967 by Scott Brothers with the intention of breeding racehorses of the highest quality, which includes 167 mares, 110 foals, 90 yearlings and 5 stallions. Mogok, the most successful son of Storm Cat at stud in South Africa and a half-brother to Champion sire Machiavellian – has produced the likes of Grade 1 winner The Apache and Orbison, who both won the Grade 1 Champions Cup in 2011 and 2010 respectively.
Mogok sired multiple and international Grade 1 winning Gypsy’s Warning, a mare who sold for $US 1.05 million last year at the Keeneland November sale. Our other stallions include Miesque’s Approval, The Sheik, Overlord and Atso. Scott Brothers achieved their ambition and have been leading breeders for the past 45 years, producing champions and consistently good racehorses, including the winners of the country’s two top races, Rothman’s July Handicap and the J&B Metropolitan Handicap.
Politician, South Africa’s finest racehorse of all time, was bred by Scott Brothers who also enjoyed the distinction of owning Devon Air, winner of the country’s top event on racing calendar, as it was known then the Rothman’s Durban July.
Some of South Africa’s top race fillies such as Bold West, Jungle Class, Right Back and Political Pet were bred and raced by Highdown Stud with outstanding success. A final eloquent testimony to Scott Bros. – as leading breeders in the racing industry – is the fact that syndicate members of the champion sire Foveros chose Highdown Stud to stand the stallion as soon as it became obvious that he was destined to be one of the greatest sires the country had ever seen.
Jungle Cove, the five-time champion sire, was resident stallion at Highdown and bred many of South Africa’s best fillies, which, in turn, formed the nucleus of the broodmares at the stud.
The stud is magnificent and can be compared with almost any similar stud in the world. Scott Brothers in fact inspected many international studs so as to build the best possible establishment. The barns and buildings are top class.
The Scott Brothers searched for land where there was an abundance of water and suitable pastures for the breeding of high class horses. The racing results have proved, Scott Brothers found the ideal location. The 1000 acre farm is situated in magnificent surroundings with Durban and Johannesburg within easy reach. The 1000 acres comprise 750 acres of arable land, the balance being land occupied by five dams, buildings, vlei’s etc.
The red grass grazing, which is natural grassland peculiar to the Midlands and which Scott Brothers felt is essential for the raising of young stock, is similar to the Pampas area of which the Argentine Stud are famous. The pastures include Hay, Eragrostis, Rye, Oats and Kikuyu.
The stud has 170 stables in total comprising 111 stables in five covered barns, 8 stallion boxes and 4 foaling boxes.
Two of the covered bars have 47 loose boxes attached which are generally used for yearling preparations, as well as a horse-walker. The office complex has a reception area which offers refreshment facilities for visitors to the stud. Within this complex there are six isolation boxes, an “knock down” room and a fully equipped theatre for the resident vet on call.
