Aldora Stud’s Soul Master, by the late great KZN-bred sire Jet Master, ran away with the Java Handicap Listed over 2450m last night at Turffontein by two lengths, carrying the top weight of the field with 60kgs under jockey Pierre Strydom.

St John Gray’s home-bred Yer Maan (by Jam Alley) ran on for second with Summerhill-bred Salutation, by Requiem, finishing third.

What must be a sentimental victory for Aldora Stud (they stood Jet Master’s broodmare sire Rakeen), Soul Master was a R275 000 yearling purchase at the 2009 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale.

His dam Saintly Soul (by Comic Blush out of Peacetime mare Saintly Lady) is a five-time winner including two Listed races and placing in both Gr 3 races, the Natalia Stakes and Sharp Electronics Trial. She has produced five winners from seven foals at stud, including nine-time winner St Stephen.

An outstanding dam-line, it includes sire Golden Gallant, National Emblem, Avenger and champion racemare Roland’s Song, more sires in Durban July winner Mazarin and Savonarola Bishop’s Crown amongst many other Bold Black Types.

Soul Master has won over distances of 1200 – 2400m with six wins in total and earning over R450 000. He has won the Listed Derby Trial, and placed third in both the Caradoc Gold Cup Gr 3 and Lonsdale Stirrup Cup Gr 3.

A horse that seems to relish carrying heavy weight, he won the Pinnacle Stakes at Turffontein carrying 60kgs by almost 1.5 lengths over 2450m; the second horse Ice Trigger carrying 52.5kgs. In the past he has defeated the likes of Seal, Bulsara and Bouquet-Garni.

Trained by Geoff Woodruff, the trainer of his famous sire Jet Master, Soul Master is owned by Mr M De Broglio.
