KZN Breeders Series: First Juvenile Log – 18 February 2018

Exciting Piemonte Stud-bred prospect, Carlita, is at the top of the Log of the KZN Breeders Series for Juveniles with 14 points.

Piemonte Stud have bred the likes of O’ Tamara, Celestina, Lee’s Star and Kalamain amongst others.

The KZN Breeders Race Day takes place on Saturday, 30 June at Greyville, and both juvenile races will be on the Polytrack. Last year saw the Durban View Room at full capacity of 400 owners, trainers and breeders in a sea of Black and White.

The Oratorio 2yo filly out of Auburn Annio by Point Given, is owned in partnership by new prospective trainer Mrs A B Fortune, and Mr & Mrs Alan Greeff. Trained by Alan Greef, Carlita sold for just R35 000 at the 2017 KZN Yearling Sale, and won impressively on debut by a phenomenal eight lengths over 1000m.

She recently followed up with second under Piere Strydom to Traces (AUS), at Kenilworth in the Tattersalls Summer Juvenile Stakes (Listed). Carlita descends from a family of leading Argentine Group Winners, including sire Spring Halo.

175 Entries have been received for the two juvenile races to be run on KZN Breeders Race Day, both over 1200m (one each for colts and fillies) and each for a stake of R200 000.

In an important update to the entries and conditions this year, to accommodate juveniles that may be showing precociousness for the race day, entries for 2yo’s will remain open until 22 March 2018 at an entry fee of R57 in order to accommodate these young horses. 

The races will be open to all horses country-wide whose credentials meet the criteria of “KZN bred” as prescribed by the rules of the KZN Breeders Premium Scheme, and the points accumulating from 1 January.

The KZN Breeders Race Day is the second biggest event by stakes on Gold Circle’s racing calendar with stakes of R2,6 million on offer. Seven other races, including the feature Million Mile, will be run each for a stake of R200 000 – open to KZN-breds 3yo’s and up over 1200m, 1600m and 1900m.

In addition to the stakes earned by the winning and placed connections, the KZN Breeders Club also hand out vouchers to the first four of each race to use towards the purchase of a KZN-bred horse at the KZN Yearling Sale (with a combined value of R223 000), which always takes place the week prior to the running of the Vodacom Durban July.
