Gr1 Allan Robertson winner Chocolicious, a Backworth Stud-bred daughter of Kahal has seen her first yearling by Frankel sold to Shadwell Stud for $610 000, off the Inglis Australia Easter Yearling Sale. She is the first yearling by Frankel to be sold in the Southern Hemisphere.

The chestnut filly will be exported and sent to Mike De Kock to train in South Africa. Interestingly, Backworth Stud have Lot 81 named Honour Bound consigned at the upcoming National Yearling Sale – a Kahal filly out of an Exclusive Patriot mare, and the yearling is a half-sister to Gr2 winner, Colour Of Courage.

This yearling filly would be a three parts sister to Chocolicious – the latter out of an Exclusive Patriot mare, Candy Box, in turn out of an Our Casey’s Boy mare.

Chocolicious has since foaled a second filly, by Fastnet Rock in 2015.

After a successful racing career in South Africa with Herman Brown Junior, Chocolicious was exported to Dubai to race.

She placed second in the Gr3 Meydan Tennis Championships Stakes, and third in the UAE 1000 Guineas (L) – and was sent back to South Africa in training with Frank Robinson, where she won. A R220 000 National Yearling Sales graduate, she won six races over 1000m – 1200m.

She was sold to Australian interests and exported with the intention of sending her to Ascot to race, however plans changed and she was covered by Frankel and sold at Goff’s Breeding Stock Sale for 400 000 Euro and exported to Australia.

She is the second Gr1 winning daughter of Kahal to stand at stud in Australia, behind Noble Heir.

Backworth Stud have two progeny of Kahal on sale at the upcoming National Yearling Sale, amongst eight horses consigned.

This is the final crop of yearlings available from the ever consistent Top 5 sire in South Africa, Kahal.

Backworth Stud won the KZN Breeders Achievement Award in 2012 after achieving a winners to runners percentage of an outstanding 54%.

They have bred the likes of recent Scottsville course record breaker Humidor who shattered Kildonan’s Gr1 course record, Chocolicious, Colour Of Courage, First Again, Variometer and Raise The Bar, and more recently smart Western Winter filly, Ice Run.
