The KZN Breeders Association will be hosting our annual Awards evening at Bellwood Cottages on 17 November, congratulations to all the breeders with horses nominated for this years awards.

Summerhill Stud, being the champion breeders that they are, have the biggest nominee representation at the upcoming awards, with 11 nominations and seven horses – including the likes of Pierre Jourdan, Black Wing, Love Struck, Vodacom Durban July runner-up Smanjemanje and fillies such as Mannequin, Checcetti and Extra Zero.

Backworth Stud have two with fast fillies Chocolicious and Variometer. Keith Russon and Ian Todd of Backworth have had an excellent year, producing a runners to winners percentage of over 53% – with a number of Black-type winners achieved last season. Variometer has been nominated for Outstanding Three Year Old Sprinter Female, as well as Outstanding Three Year Old Filly, whilst Gr 1 winning Chocolicious is in the Outstanding Sprinter Female category.

Scott Bros consistently produce classy performers and this year is no different. The recent emergence of Eton Square, a son of their resident sire Miesque’s Approval, won a Gr 3 earlier this year and went on to place in the Vodacom Durban July, leaving a trail of talented horses in his wake. Others the Scott Bros have up for nomination are Mogok’s Desire and another by Mogok with The Apache. The Apache was exported earlier this year and is now under the care of Mike De Kock – he was scheduled to campaign in the East but a change of plan now sees The Apache in Dubai.

Bush Hill Stud have the flag flying, represented by The Mouseketeer – and another proud moment with Dr Ian Heyns’ Seal, who was born and raised at Warwick and Karin Render’s farm.

Bush Hill Stud are represented in two categories with The Mousketeer (by Kahal), and against Seal (also with two nominations) in the Outstanding Older Male category. Their resident sire Kahal has seven of his progeny nominated – and it must be pointed out that the category of Outstanding Sprinter Female sees all three nominees by Kahal, bred by three different breeders. The Renders’ recently welcomed a full-brother to The Mousketeer last week.

KZN Breeders Association Chairman Koos De Klerk, has Greenacre nominated in the category of Outstanding Two Year Old Colt, bred by his and Lorraine De Klerk’s Yellow Star Stud.

Aldora have Soul Master, a son of KZN-bred national champion sire Jet Master, nominated for Outstanding Male Stayer. Soul Master recently won the Listed Java Handicap by two lengths, carrying top weight of 60kgs over 2450m.

Another point of interest is Rob and Michele Pickering’s Daylami filly, Kalami. She is out of Kal Sufi which makes her a half-sister to Model K, the sale-stopper of the 2012 KZN Mixed Sale this year – she is the dam of Mannequin (bred by Summerhill Stud) who has a nomination in the category of Outstanding Sprinter Female. Kalami has been nominated for Outstanding 3YO Filly. Model K foaled a full-sister to Mannequin this year.

St John Gray’s Graystone Stud have two nominees – Dancewiththedevil who was voted KZN Breeders Horse Of The Year in 2011 – and Engagement – who recently retired to Hadlow Stud. Dancewiththedevil is on her way to an exciting career in the UK and this year’s awards see her in two different categories. Engagement is a daughter of Announce, a stallion that St John Gray has had a lot of success with as well as his full brother Sarge. Engagement will be up against her ex-paddock and stablemate, Dancewiththedevil, as well as Checcetti in the award for Outstanding Middle Distance Female.

It is rewarding to see a number of horses nominated that come from private breeders. Awesome Beauty, bred by Mr Bunwarie, is by Cataloochee out of Bejewelled Beauty. Born and raised at Mike and Tanya McHardy’s Rathmor Stud, her dam Bejewelled Beauty has produced a chestnut Strategic News(AUS) colt this season.

Shogunnar, by Solksjaer bred by F Tarbitt, is a half-brother to two successful black-type racemares in Saltwater Girl and Rapid Flow. The dam Surfer’s Eye has an outstanding Admire Main filly named Admiral’s Eye (Lot 120), a horse who ran an impressive gallop at Summerhill last week. entered on the upcoming Emperors Palace Ready-To-Run sale. Shogunnar has been nominated in the category of Outstanding 3YO Colt.

Messrs P & RM Sewgoolam have Furious Dancer nominated for Outstanding Male Sprinter. Furious Dancer was foaled at Neil Sykes’ Orangewood Stud while Kjell Foundation have Kalaam, a daughter of Kahal, nominated for two categories.

Mr and Mrs Rosseau of St Helier Stud have made KZN proud with Madigan, who recently took home Zimbabwe’s Joint Horse Of The Year. Madigan won the Zimbabwean Triple Crown earlier this year. Madigan has been nominated in the category of Outstanding Three Year Old Colt.

The KZN Breeders Awards evening will start at 6 for 6:30pm, R300 per person. Contact Candiese if you would like to make a booking for the evening.
