The KZN Breeders had a successful National Yearling Sale, with the progeny of first season sire Visionaire stealing the show and King's Chapel following.

Visionaire stands at nine-time South African Champion Breeders' Summerhill Stud. A Gr1 winning son of Grand Slam, Visionaire left for South Africa towards the end of his first covering season in the USA, his first crop have raced with a number of winners including two Bold Black Types.

The top-priced KZN-bred fillies remained the first that sold on the first day - both consigned by Summerhill Stud - one of them a Visionaire and the other a Var, both from Summerhill Stud.

The top-priced colt from KZN also remained from the first days results - with Backworth's stunning Silvano named Alloy sold early in the sale for R1-million. Backworth Stud had an outstanding sale - selling four choicely-bred Lots for an average of R568 750 each.

Summerhill Sales topped the average with two Lots sold for an average of R775 000, followed by Summerhill Stud who averaged R384 667 for 15 Lots sold and Rathmor Stud following suit, selling two for an average of R375 000.

KZN-bred three-time winner by Var, She's A Pippa owned by Team Valor, had her Western Winter half-sister sell for Lot 44 R2-million to Ridgemont Stud.

Visionaire made a grand entrance to the South African racing market - achieving an incredible average of R349 000 for 15 yearlings sold - which included his grey daughter, a half-sister to No Worries purchased by Ridgemont for R1,4 million - quite a debut for a freshman sire. His top-priced colt of the sale came from Alan and Vera Sutherland's Somerset Stud on the first day, Lot 17 named Diamontaire, purchased by Visionaire's owners Team Valor for R600 000.

Bush Hill Stud's King's Chapel followed suit - selling two yearlings for an average of R275 000. His top seller was an outstanding chestnut colt very much in the image of his sire - Lot 399 Malak El Moolook. The mare, Gr3 winner Lee Danzig, clearly nicks with King Of Kings - her previous three progeny - Millenium Reign, Reign As Kings and Reign Victorious, are all by King Of Kings and achieved eight wins between them. King Of Kings whos stands at Clifton Stud, is of course the sire of King's Chapel. Malak El Moolook sold for R350 000 to B Riley.

The other of Kings Chapel to sell was another outstanding colt, Lot 240 Oracle Kingdom for R200 000, bred and consigned by Bush Hill Stud. A half-brother to 12-time winner Tetelestai (who won at Fairview two days ago once again) whose victories include the Umngeni Handicap Listed twice, he is a half-brother to three winners. This pedigree has already nicked with his winning half-brother by King Of Kings, Honour Melchizedek.

A stallion who possessed both the looks and pedigree but sadly only left one crop before his untimeous death, Bankable two top-priced yearlings were sold for R250 000 each on the second day session. The first was Lot 312 sold to Tony Rivalland - a colt out of Four Ladies Wild. From the immediate family of Running Wild and Flaming Axe, this is the mares first produce. Spring Valley Stud sold his top-priced filly the day before, Lot 164 out of Orpen mare Amy Jane for R225 000.

The impeccably-bred Gr1 winner Just As Well standing at Spring Valley Stud, for owners Roski Stud and Anton Proctor, had his first yearlings presented this year. His top-priced colt sold to Des Egdes for R200 000, bred and consigned by Bruce Le Roux's Spring Valley Stud. The colt named Just Positive is out of Positive Thoughts(USA) by King Of Kings, in turn out of Mr Prospector mare. Just As Well is by A.P. Indy out of No Matter What by Nureyev, both sire and broodmare sire of Judpot.

Just As Well, or JAWS as he is affectionately known, shares an immediate damline with overseas sire sensations E Dubai and Ravens Pass.

KZN's top sire Kahal once again was represented by a number of yearlings and his top seller came from Mike and Tanya McHardy's Rathmor Stud. Lot 333 Romany Prince, sold for R450 000 to Ormond Ferraris on behalf of P Dimakogiannis. The dark-bay colt is a half-brother to three time Gr1 winner (in the USA and SA) Gypsy's Warning (by Mogok). The colt carries an interesting pedigree as Mogok is a half-brother to Machiavellian, the sire of Kahal.

Kahal's top selling filly was Lot 23 Khonza - a proven pedigree combination, Khonza is a full sister to the Gr performing sisters' Eastern Greeting and Kalaam, both bred by the Kjell Foundation out of mare Salaam by Northern Guest. She sold to Maine Chance Farms for R350 000 and could quite possibly be a great asset to their breeding paddocks in the future.

Congratulations to the breeders on a wonderful sale and wishing the trainers and owners of their new acquisitions all the best with their KZN-breds.
