KZN had a very successful day on the first of two of the National Yearling Sale - with three KZN-breds reaching a R1-million and more.

The breeders of Gr1 winning Chocolicious who sold in foal to Frankel last year, Backworth Stud set the tone immediately with their magnificent Silvano colt, Lot 5 named Alloy, selling to Form Bloodstock for R1-million. Out of the mare Refined Gold by Rich Man's Gold, the colt is a half-brother to two-time winner White Tiger. Backworth also sold a filly by Trippi last year named Spangle - the closest in pedigree to Trippi's champion American daughter R Heat Lightning.

This is an exceptional damline being the immediate family of Horse Chestnut - and includes the likes of Monyela, Mr Brock and Cape Badger, as well as Sport's Chestnut.

South African first season sire brought in by Team Valor, Visionaire got off to a cracking start - first off with Lot 17, a chestnut colt named Diamontaire selling for R600 000. The colt was bred and consigned by Alan and Vera Sutherland of Somerset Stud. He is a half-brother to four winners from the damline of Hail Caesour, Cartel, Rip Curl and His Lordship.

Summerhill Stud sold two horses each for R1,400 000, including a grey daughter of Visionaire, and a half-sister to Gr1 placed No Worries.

The first off was Lot 140 by Var out of Jet Master mare White Mischief. The bay filly, a first produce for the Gr2 placed dam, sold to Dr J Hay. This is the immediate family of Hail To Rule, Miss Mischief and What A Jet.

The beautiful grey daughter of Visionaire out of Coastal Waltz by Rambo Dancer, Lot 230 named Yoruba, carries a pure Summerhill pedigree. Her dam is an 11-time winner who has produced two winners - including Brian and Yolanda Burnard's No Worries who has placed in Gr1's such as the Vodacom Durban July, Daily News 2000 by a nose, the Queens Plate and Gauteng Guineas.

KZN's other first season sires saw Roski Stud's Just As Well open the 2014 sale with Lot 1 Incadescence selling for R110 000. A beautifully bred colt out of French mare Rain And Shine (by Rainbow Quest), this is the damline of Fort Wood, Kabool, Dubai Millenium and BZianconi - to name but a few.

Bankable had his first Lot 164 sell for R225 000, consigned by Spring Valley Stud as agent. The unnamed filly out of Irish mare Amy Jane by Orpen is a second produce for the mare. This is the damline of Roland Gardens, Kundalani, Diamond Diva and Vengence.

King's Chapel sold a lovely individual - Lot 240 - the beautifully named Oracle Kingdom for R200 000, bred and consigned by Bush Hill Stud. A half-brother to 12-time winner Tetelestai (who won at Fairview two days ago once again) whose victories include the Umngeni Handicap Listed twice, he is a half-brother to three winners. This pedigree has already nicked with his winnig half-brother by King Of Kings, Honour Melchizedek.

Congratulations to the breeders and new owners concerned.

The second session begins tomorrow at 11am and will see Lots 281 - 529 going under the hammer. Visit www.tba.co.za for the full results and alive video stream of the sale.
