Westonian, bred by Yellow Star Stud, won the Kenyan Guineas last weekend at Ngong by 4.5 lengths from the second horse Wonnitestand, Shufti and Somerset. The bay son of Bezrin, who stands at Rathmor Stud, closely resembles his sire and was the hot favourite for the race, running just one second outside the course record. He is out of the mare Western Truth by West Man(USA).

Owned by Mim Haynes, Westonian is trained by Patsy Sercombe and ridden by her daughter, a top jockey, Les Sercombe. Mirium Haynes, the owner of Westonian, went onto say: "In the past, I have won the Fillies Guineas (twice), The Derby, The St Leger and The Oaks - the Kenya Guineas has always eluded me.

"Needless to say, having the outright favourite was nerve racking with so much pressure from everyone else’s expectations, but well worth it in the end. Lesley rode a great race and deserved this win - she last won the Guineas about 18 years ago. Patsy has won countless Classics but had not won the Guineas since 2002!"

Westonian's dam, Western Truth, has a filly foal by Carpocrates at foot (born October 2012) and interestingly a yearling filly by Icelander (by Kris).

Chatting to Lorraine de Klerk of Yellow Star Stud she mentioned that "Western Truth is an amazing 'nanny mare' - she had four orphans plus her own foal with her last year. She is unbelievably accepting allowing all to drink from her. This year she has just had her own foal.”

Bezrin has had a number of winners recently with Black Types Double Date and Celtic Fire, Big City Angel has won his last three starts in a row, Jimmi Choo won an impressive two year old debut at the Vaal on Wednesday and multiple Listed winner Tetelestai will take his place in the Betting World Cape Flying Championship Gr 1 over 1000m tomorrow at Kenilworth.

Bezrin is also the sire of Kenyan Derby winner, Lazrin.
