KZN Breeders Race Day Invitation
| |
The annual KZN Breeders Race Day is held the week before the running of the Vodacom Durban July, and for the first time will feature only racehorses registered with the KZN Breeders Premium Scheme as “KZN-breds”– the only financial incentive scheme to own and breed racehorses in South Africa.
Previously known as the KZN Breeders 1600 which has been run since 2003 at both Scottsville and Clairwood for a stake of R250 000 over the years, KZN Breeders Club Chairman Koos De Klerk took the initiative along with his board members to increase the stake for this race to R1-million – now known as the KZN Breeders Million Mile. It is only open for three and four year old horses with a suitable merit rating.
The KZN Breeders Million Mile was run for the first time in 2012, won by Knock On Wood – bred by Mr George Rowles of Ivanhoe Stud who took home the magnificent Des And Robin Scott Floating Trophy. This year the Million Mile field includes this season's Gr 1 winning Love Struck, a Summerhill-bred son of Kahal owned by Alesh Naidoo and trained by Paul Lafferty who will also attempt a double by winning the Million Mile and the Gr 1 Vodacom Durban July in one week!
The KZN Breeders Race Day adds another first this year with the running of the KZN Breeders Series – another new initiative created by the KZN Breeders which will see six races run over distances of 1200m, 1400m and 1900m – each for colts and fillies for a stake of R200 000 each. The six races for horses over the age of three years old attracted over 600 entries.
A seventh race over 1200m has been created for two year olds, also for a stake of R200 000 – this race attracted over 250 entries alone for just 16 places to line up on the day.
Winning stakes will total an incredible amount of R2,4 million for the day – a first in South Africa for restricted horses and a first for a provincial Breeders Club.
The winning owners on the day will take home vouchers worth R10 000 towards the purchase of a KZN-bred yearling at the Suncoast KZN Yearling Sale taking place 4-5 July, whilst the winning owner of the KZN Breeders Million Mile will take home a voucher to the value of R20 000.
Previous winners of the KZN Breeders 1600/Million Mile include the likes of Goat, The Mouseketeer, Khebraat, To And Fro, Carbon Leader and Golden Moment.
