Racing To Save The Rhino

Fighting the scourge of Rhino poaching is costing millions of rands and leading the fight in KwaZulu–Natal is Project Rhino KZN which, to achieve its goals this year, will need in excess of R3-million.

Gold Circle has joined the fight with the staging of the Racing To Save The Rhino race meeting at Clairwood on March 29 which has already raised hundreds of thousands of rands through sponsorship of the 10 races on the day.

A large crowd is expected at the meeting which is headed by the Grade 3 King’s Cup and, as part of its drive to attract support from the public for the Save the Rhino campaign, Gold Circle is running a competition that offers a three-night stay for 10 people at the Bayete Zulu Game reserve as a prize with Gold Circle offering a further R5 000 in cash if the winner is on course on March 29. Entry forms will be on hand at the entrance gates.

According to Project Rhino KZN, they anticipate that South Africa’s national rhino death toll will exceed 919 this year which is almost 300 more than 2013. KwaZulu-Natal is the home to the largest population of Africa’s rhino population outside of the Kruger National Park and this year there has been a 20% increase on last year in rhino deaths in this province.

The vision of Project Rhino KZN includes “the dream of both white and black rhino species thriving in KwaZulu-Natal and far beyond – forever free, forever secure from poaching, well managed and protected.

“We honour their uniqueness as one of the primary icons of Africa’s great wilderness areas.”

The aim of the Racing To Save The Rhino race meeting is to increase awareness of the illegal slaughter of rhino in Africa, and particularly in KwaZulu-Natal, and to attract public support for the anti-poaching campaign.
