Wrap-Up Of A Scintilating Suncoast KZN Yearling Sale Share Day two of the 2012 Suncoast KZN Yearling Sale saw the exciting momentum continue and increase from day one. The atmosphere was electric in the sales ring and history was made with the highest price ever paid for a horse that has passed through the KZN Yearling Sale ring - a Trippi colt sold for R1,1-million consigned by Highlands Farms. A total of 252 horses were catalogued with 189 sold, 15 withdrawn and 11 vendor buy-backs. The aggregate was R13 020 000 compared to last year's R7 762 000. The average per horse sold was the best it has been since 2008 - finishing on an average of R68 889 compared to last year's R45 392. The top sire of the sale was King Of Kings - not surprising after heading up the National Log for Leading Two Year Old Sires earlier this year. He sold 20 lots for an average of R71 000 each. The next top stallion was Mr Robin Scott's Miesque's Approval. An exceptional colt was sold today, consigned by Scott Brothers for R425 000. Eton Square will be representing his sire in the Vodacom Durban July at Greyville on Saturday. Progeny of Miesque's Approval averaged R85 667 each. The top vendor of the sale went to Robin Scott of Scott Bros, selling 16 beautifully turned out lots for an average of R109 063. The top buyer went to Mr L.J. Erasmus, who bought 11 lots averaging R141 818 each. The top-priced KZN-bred filly for today was Lot 170 from Backworth Stud, Maid For War (A.P. Arrow - Battalia(SNL) by Barathea), a first produce for her unraced dam. This is the family of Bold Black Type winners Big Stone (top-rated older miler in France in 1994), Billy The Kid, Blue Cloud and Rhythm Of Light, to name but a few. Keith Russon of Backworth Stud in Eston, which is achieving an incredible 54% runners to winners, said it was wonderful to see a big upswing from previous years. "There were a lot of new people there at that sale, including trainers and buyers and who never really participated in the sale previously," he said afterwards. "It was clear that everyone's hard work and effort from all the extra advertising with the new races has paid off, and we are on the road to better things. The KZN sale has never sold a horse for a million ever previously and it just shows that if you bring the right horse, you will get the right price. It's all about bringing the right horse. Backworth had a great sale, we averaged about R100 000 and we are very happy. Everybody made a big effort, and that paid off. I think the challenge now is to bring better horses, two Miesques Approvals and the Atsos sold very well, and the Trippi for R1,1 million is just unbelievable - which just shows that the right horse you will get the money." The overall top-priced KZN-bred filly remained from Yellow Star Stud, Lot 34 by Silvano, Lady Silvia and was sold for R200 000 while the top-priced KZN-bred colt was a big, impressive individual from the Scott Bros, Lot 126 named Swedish King, a son of Miesque's Approval out of French mare Eleonora by Fasliyev(USA), in turn out of a Foveros mare. He fetched R425 000 and was released by Greg Ennion Racing. This is Eleonora's first foal and the dam is a half-sister to multiple Grade 1 winner Ingleside, and includes the family of Evening Mist, ARCSA Champion Older Female in 1988 as well as Misty Peak and Maggie Kay. The top-priced yearling overall was a dark bay son of Trippi named Tiger Territory, out of Fragrant Filly by Model Man. A three-quarter brother to Franny, this family includes Scented Royal, Philipa Johnson and Texan Summer. He sold to Mr L.J. Erasmus for R1.1 million. An excited Tom Callaghan, CEO of Bloodstock South Africa, said: "Compared to last year, it has been a resounding success. We were almost R5 million up from last year - we reached an average of R68 000 and the median will be a lot higher than last year obviously with the sales topper of R1.1 million which is unreal. Well done to the KZN Breeders and their team - the Triple Million was obviously a huge incentive for buyers and thanks must go to the Cape Breeders for supporting the Suncoast KZN Yearling Sale and sending their yearlings here."
