Balmoral Stud has built up a country wide reputation as an establishment of excellence and we are supported by some of the best trainers in the business.

We do board approximately 20 mares - including on behalf of clients, however we specialise in the pre-training of racehorses. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence therefore is not act, but a habit. We are aiming to be the best in the Southern Hemisphere.

There are two tracks on the farm, one of which is an undulating dirt track of 3km in length. The second track is grass and 2km in length. We believe on working the horses up and down the undulations and they also do a lot of walking up and down the hills which is perfect for building muscle and getting the horses fit.

The fillies generally get to run together in small groups of 6 to 8 in large paddocks but the colts have individual paddocks for obvious reasons. Dust free hay is cut on the far where we also feed the new Epol/Mike de Kock training mix and use only the top veterinary surgeons.

We make sure our horses are hard and fit when they leave us, making them in optimum condition to go into the trainers' yard. We start schooling on a long rein rather than lunging which is generally not done here in South Africa. It takes longer but we feel there is less stress on young joints and bones. Programmes are developed to suit the needs of each individual horse and they are assessed on their improvement and natural ability. The basic training program is designed to build base fitness and tendon, ligament and muscle strength. We have 15 work riders who have been individually trained by us at Balmoral.

Anyone bringing their horse to Balmoral will be in for a thorough experience.
